There is no drop-down location that can be used for searching specified Counties in WV before it separated from VA in 1862.
There are drop-downs for the present WV Counties, but when searching in 1810 through 1860 US enumerations the search engine acts very wonky.
Searching for the Davis surname in Harrison County (West) Virginia, I tried first using the drop-down.
In "exact" for the surname and location ("Harrison County, West Virginia, USA") from the dropdown I no matches - zero results.
When I made the location 'default' instead of exact, I got pages and pages of results for the wrong location.
In exasperation I tried using the "Harrison County, West Virginia, USA" dropdown, deleting "West". I really expected no results.
Using it as "exact" I got the expected "no match."
Using the "Harrison County, West Virginia, USA" dropdown with "West" deleted, in "default," however, I did get some results. Just one Davis in the right County appeared on the first page in the top 50 results, and there were others scattered in the next few pages of results.
There were quite a few Davis-surnamed persons in Harrison County in 1830, and OldSearch readily finds them.
Do you really think this is acceptable for NewSearch, or are users not ~supposed~ to be searching in WV prior to 1862 . . . . :(
All help with this very old issue in NewSearch would be much appreciated.
