I was under the impression that this is a board for owners of websites and publishers of content where they can ask questions of Ancestry about their web search. I asked a question and all I got was Hatchett...whose "opinion" I am not interested in. I would appreciate an answer from Ancestry so I'm reposting here my first question:
In one of your blog answers you stated "We are aiming to index enough to make it findable but still leave value on the individual websites so that people have an incentive to go to the website."
I decided to try out this benevolent new "web search" and see just how true the above statement is...so off to Ancestry I went and under search I clicked on "card catalogue". I then put "web" in the keyword search and the databases you presently have came up. I did a search in the Allen County, IN deaths for Mary Jones and up came her information. I then clicked on "go to website" and up came a box that I had to click on again (I wonder how many users will hit the "x" that the arrow is pointing to before finding the "open" box on the bottom...yes I did click on the x as it was an automatic reaction)...I clicked on "go to website" again and this time correctly clicked on "open" and I am now at the Allen Co site...but...I now have to do a search for Mary's information! I fill in the form and click again (yawn) and up comes the info...which is exactly what Ancestry indexed...every bit of it. Unless someone were lobotomized, it shouldn't take more than two trips to the Allen Co. site to figure out that it is no longer necessary to bother with it...and besides who wants to go through all those time consuming clicks! So...my question is...just what did you leave on the Allen Co. site that is of value and would cause researchers to want to return to that database? And just how did you in your inherent kindness help that site?
You have done the same thing to the Rootsweb obits index. Since I haven't been lobotomized, I didn't bother checking the Indiana marriages.
Also, did I read in one of the other postings that you did not contact or nofify anyone of your intentions...that you just turned your bots loose on their sites and will deal with any fallout when they discover what was done?
