Am looking for any of my family that still live in Bejaia, Algeria. My name used to be Maleka Monsouri, Mansouri? Mansour? but am not sure if surname is spelt correctly? Grandfathers name was Lahousin, Fathers name was Rabah, had quite a few brothers Mourad was the youngest I think. My father had one sister who died a long time ago. He came to Jersey CI UK, married here and lived here until he died, was then sent back for burial from Jersey CI UK to Bejaia. Any information on who I can contact to find which cemetery there would be appreciated. There can't be to many people who lived here in and then got sent home for burial, we are a tiny little islands 9mils x 5miles. Anyone out there who can advise where or who I can contact in Bejaia Passports etc? Please help as am not getting very far and do not speak any Arabic and a small amount of french.

French Army in Algeria - records from 1830...?

I am looking for the French Army record for Johann KAPPES b. 16 Jul 1804 Alsace-Lorraine. He served in the French Army for 12 years with a tour of duty in Algiers/Algeria. As I understand it, the French Invasion of Algeria occurred in 1830 - so his time spent in Algeria was most likely between 1830 and 1842 when he emigrated to America.
Shortly before coming to America he married (~1842)Catherine BLEICHNER who was b. 1814 at Veckersviller, Moselle, France (near Phalsbourg), but I have not been able to find their marriage record or the town from which they departed.
Any help with locating the French Army records, should they exist, for those who served in Algeria 1830 onward would be much appreciated.
Sincerely,
George

Clarification on the period of accessible records?

Hi everyone. I was wondering whether anyone who speaks french could help with some basic data regarding the period of currently accessible records, and also their location?

We have the digitally indexed archive here:

http://anom.archivesnationales.culture.gouv.fr/caomec2/reche...

Which runs from 1830 to 1904, and also now includes non indexed scans of books from 1904 to 1910. Does this research go up to 1910 due to a 100 year limit on accessing records, or does it go up to 1910 because that is simply how far they have got?

Can we access records after 1910 by contacting somebody, or is it legally impossible? If we can, how?

Also, where are these records? Are they held in France or in Algeria?

I ask these questions because there are events in my family tree that happened between 1910 and 1920, and there are also events that happened in 1909 which I cannot find. To be more specific there is a marriage in Berrouaghia in 1909, while there is no book for this region in the online archive.

Thanks.

Hi Lucie

My grandparents - Frederic Constant QUOD and Josephine QUOD nee WOLKRINGER from Boufarik in Algeria came to Australia in 1905 - 1906 with my three older aunts and uncles - Marie Frederique (1897), Raoul Constant (1899) and Edouard Jules (1904). Raoul and Edouard were born in Kolea. In 1938, my father visited Algeria with his father and an uncle and my youngest uncle and met many of his cousins and uncles. Hauck family and Emery family - his mother's sisters families and Rabaste and Leroux families - my grandfather's sister's families.Only one married sister Margerite Rabaste nee QUOD and her family remained in Algeria. When my grandfather emigrated to Australia, three of his brothers - Francois, Jules and Adolphe came as well and later in 1922 his youngest sister Jeanne Marie ULRICK nee QUOD widowed with two young children in the WW1 came to Australia as well. Most of them lived near Boufarik and Mustapha. My third cousin, Roger Leroux and family left Algeria on a ship for Corsica then Marseille in 1962. He lived his last years in Avignon where he died in the early 1990s.

I am an Australian with a little understanding of school book French. My grandparents had died before I was born in 1953 and my father was born in Australia in 1917.

Do you live in France, now? Were you very old when you left Algeria in 1957? What are your memories of the lifestyle back then. when my grandfather visited in 1938 he commented that the country had modernised - highways were excellent, many cars on the roads and farming had become more mechanised since he managed a date plantation near Boufarik. Of course Australia was a very young country then and behind Europe and USA in many ways.
Carol

Are you French?

Carol, the records online in the ANOM site are only from 1830 to 1904, for the moment. More records are put online little by little.

You can go in the site ANOM and found out more. Just pu a name, or a name and the city, or just the city to see what's available.

Cordially,

Lucie

Hi Lucie
Thanks for information on Hauck family. Edourd HAUCK is my grandmother's ( Josephine Quod nee Wolkringer) brother in law. Now I have a birth date for him. They had chidren and grandchildren whom my father met in 1938 on a visit to Algeria. My dad wrote letters home to the family and i first read them three years ago when my brother gave me a box of stuff. He spoke of his Uncle Edourd being a wonderful cook.

Thanks for your help.
Carol Josefski nee QUOD

Have you remained living in Algeria or did you and your family leave in 1962. I have a second cousin Roger Leroux left in 1962 for Marseilles via Corsica by ship and later Avignon where he died sometime after 1992.
Have gotten a lot of info from the anom site too. If i wanted to find birth and death records for further QUOD family from Boufarik in Algeria from 1900 onwards how would i find that information.
thanks for help.
Carol Josefski

Hi Lucie
Thanks for your response. First, can you access geneanet.org at all. It is a French genealogy site similar to ancestry.com. I am not financial with this website.
Some public trees on it have similar records on the QUOD family born Villeneuve la Comptal and Castelnaudary in southern France. I am looking for
Jean Francois QUOD born 1832 at V la C, (family tree Mazafran,Uoed)
Cecile Quod ? maybe his sister.
Antoine Quod born 1799 V la c. (dchazal family tree)maybe?
My ancestors moved to Algeria about 1860.
Jean Francois Quod married Frederique Kerth in 1864 in Boufarik in Algeria. They appear to have had several children - Leon Francois, Margueritte, Frederik Constant (my grandfather), Francois Eugene, Jules, Felix, Adoulph, and Jeanne-Marie between 1864 and 1885.
Frederik Constant married Josephine Wolkringer in 1896 in La Chiffa, Algeria. They had three children before migrating to Australia - Marie Frederique 1897, Raoul Constant 1899 and Edouard Jules 1904. They had four more children in Australia. My research of Algerian information is limited. Can you find anything on these families? My email is < carolj@supervendsoftware.com >

There are tow other siblings of my grandmothers - Marie Eugene Wolkringer and another who married Edourd HAUCK in Boufarik and Moustapha.

There was a cousin of my grandfather's, FC QUOD in Castnaudary who was alive in 1938 but the only information on him is a name Besson and he and his wife had a shop in Castelnaudary. Maybe family trees with references to QUOD in Castnaudary maybe been related to me.

I am Australian and my father was the second youngest child of Frederik Constant Quod ( 1870 - 1950) and Josephine Wolkringer (1877 - 1946) - born in Proserpine, Queensland, Australia.

Another relative escaped Algeria in 1962 to Avignon - Roger Leroux - born abt 1920 - 25 in Boufarik maybe and appears to have died in the early 1990s in Avignn, Fr.

Any help will be gratefully accepted.
Thanks
Carol

Hi Jane:

Unable to find Catherine CAMELET.

This site shows a distribution of surnames in France during certains years

http://www.geopatronyme.com/cgi-bin/carte/nomcarte.cgi?numer...

Between 1891 and 1915 (the earliest years shown on the website), there were 7 births in Pas-de-Calais (62); 1 birth in Ain (01) and 1 birth in Eure (27). The number in parentheses is attributed to the department in France. See the Map.

I hope you will someday find your ancestor.

Cordially,

Lucie
Hi Jo Ann,

I may just have a connection with your mum’s family!! Although I am not sure about your mum’s grand-parents which I have sent a message to cousins across Facebook few minutes ago as it’s quiet late to get a response right now 
The Good news is, my dad uncle was also a Pharmacist in Algiers his name was Ali Zaouche, The Pharmacy still carry his name to this date in a district of Algiers known as “Sacre-Coeur”
I honestly thought to be the first Zaouche to step in this shores in 1989, I guess I was wrong 
I will keep you informed once I get more information…

Kind Regards

Remy
Thank you Lucie, I have searched the Algeria site and I have found her mother's death. Catherine Camelet as 28th July 1824 in El Affroun, Blida, Algiers and that she is a widow. Is the name Camelet an Algierian name??

That is all I was able to decipher as the site is in French. I can not make out whether her parents' information are listed on it. The death of her husband Giuseppe Camilleri is another one that I can not find. It seems that Josephine was one of 7 children all born in Mustapha. She met and married John in Mustapha 29 Apr 1875. They had one child Ubaldesca in 1877 in Mustapha and by 1878 they had their next child in Qrendi, Malta.

Finding the parents of Joseph Camilleri and his wife Catherine Camelet would be great and also the date of when their daughter Josephine went to Malta with her husband and daughter.

Thank you

Hi JaneNDoe,
I just looked up that name on ANOM and did not find it as well. It may be that the French government does not have this document but the Algerian government does. You will have to write the town of Algiers directly to obtain the acte de naissance (birth certificate). If you are interested in doing so, reply with your e-mail address and I will e-mail you instructions on how to do so (I will include a model letter in French also.) My grandmother was Spanish Algerian and I've have had to write the towns directly to obtain her family documents.

Hi Lucie: Yes, I am very familiar with the site. This is how I found this family. I am looking for living descendants, which is difficult because the records don't go past 1904. However, I did find some marginal notations that provided information into the 1940s and 1950s. Thanks for responding. Judy

Hi Judy:

Are you familiar with this website http://anom.archivesnationales.culture.gouv.fr/caomec2/reche...

The documents put on line in this site only go up to 1904. It will probably be like looking for a needle in a haystack but you can always try. I would type the last name only, for ex: BOEHM and look for all births and marriages (up to 1904 mainly in ORAN) paying particularly attention to first names such as Marie; Louise; Jean Baptiste, etc... (first names carried thru the generations by grandparents, parents, etc...). It is not going to be easy but you might get lucky and find a document with familiar names you are looking for and from there you can look up the last generation let's say in Rootsweb.com; FamilySearch.org or Ancestry (if you have a membership).

There are also groups (in French) that can help you. Let me know if you are interested.

Bonne chance.

Lucie
