My great grandfather was born in Cape Verde - REpublic of Senegal on 21/5/1856. This information appears on his naturalization papers in Australia. I am seeking any information about Joao Preira. His family moved to the Canary Islands and I believe he had 5 sisters. His father owned/ran a sugar plantation on the Canary Islands. Joao jumped aboard a ship at about the age of 14/15. That is about all the information I have of him. He jumped ship in Tasmania, Australia.

Cape Verdeans that moved to Harwich MA

I have searched the town records of Harwich,MA, a town on Cape Cod, and have aquired a list of almost 3,000 Cape Verdeans. If you believe any of your relatives have moved down this way I might be able to help. I can release information only on those that are no longer living, but can lead in the right direction to find out more. By giving out information, I am hoping someone might know some of my relatives as well. I am currently searching for the name Raneo. We have reason to believe that it was spelled much differently on the Island (Fogo) but we are not sure. The three Raneo brothers Antonio, Frank, and Manuel came to the US possibly in the late 1800s early 1900s and have created a huge family since then. I am a descendant of Frank(1892-15 Oct 1932) and have almost finished tracing this branch of the family and hope to now move in the other direction and learn more about my past in Fogo.

Mendes
I just received immigration naturalization papers for my grandfather. His name was Joseph Coelhos Mendes. He was from the Cape Verde island of Sao Tiago.

He traveled on the SS Indiana. The ship embarked in New Bedford, MA on August 3, 1914. He had two brothers that traveled with him, Antonio Mendes and Peter Mendes.

During my searches I found he traveled to US with his brother Antonio Mendes and Peter Mendes. Antonio is shown on the 1920 Federal census living in Norwalk, Fairfield, CT, then on the 1930 census listed as a cousin to (?) in Whitman, Plymouth, MA.

Peter is shown to have traveled to Hartford CT with Joseph according to the 1920 Federal Census and is then reported on the 1930 Federal Census in Boston, Suffolk MA.

If you have any related information, please email me directly at Serraofam@cox.net.
Their children were Alice (my great grandmother), George (served in World War II), Arthur, Elsie, Silvia, Chelsea, and Cecilia. Alice married a John Felix, whom she divorced when my grandfather (also John Felix) was a baby. If you have any information on the Bans family, please email me.

I'm researching my family line which goes through Cova Rodela and Santa Barbara on the island of Brava. One line is SILVA. Ramos (my great-grandfather), Manuel Domingos (my grandfather), Manuel's brothers (all but 2), his brother-in-law, and some other men died in 1943 in a shipwreck somewhere off the coast of Bermuda. The ship's name was Mathilde.
The other line is MARTINS. My grandmother Fortunata was born in Cape Verde and married Manuel D. da Silva. Her mother Aurora TORRES was born in Portugal. I don't know where her father Fortunato MARTINS is from.
If you have any info. on anything mentioned above, please email me. I'd be willing to share what I have.
