Baptism at the Cairo Citadel 1889

I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction...

GGrandfather met and married GGrandmother (both British Subjects) in Egypt and produced my Grandmother.
Neither the marriage or birth are recorded in the British Indices.

Luckily I have my Grandmother's Baptism Certificate which was issued at the Cairo Citadel October 1889 but only gives her father's name. I know GGrandmother was alive so I assume they didn't think the mother was important enough to be noted!!

My questions are....

1. Is it possible to apply direct to the Citadel to see if they have more information than that recorded on the Baptism Certificate? If so how would I go about it?
2. Would the British Embassy at Cairo hold birth/marriage details for 1888/9.....I intend to e.mail them but just wondered if anyone on here knew from past experience.

Many thanks in advance for any help.
Chris
The above named was my GG Grandfather. He was in the Royal Horse Guards and was married to Jane Woodroffe in 1848. They had 3 children - Charles Lacy b 1849, Frank Leatham b 1851 and Louisa Jane b 1855. For some reason, both Charles and Frank changed their surname to Hobbs and then back to Hawkins when they were to be married. I have looked for Thomas's discharge papers at the PRO but can only find a Charlie Hawkins who went AWOL at the drop of a hat!! Is there anyone out there who can shed some light on my elusive GG Grandfather?

Looking for Mossoba family

I'm trying to find information about my Grandmother. Her name was Marie Mossoba. She was born in Cairo on May 11, 1900. I believe she worked for the British Army in Cairo for some time before she came to the US in 1924. She had 3 sisters: Mary Mossoba (who I believe is my aunt Margot Mossoba Webb), Adele Mossoba, and Beatrice Samaan Mossoba. All were born in Cairo.

On one of the immigration records I found a reference to their father's name which is Boutros Khalil. I am assuming that is Boutros Khalil Mossoba. I know he died sometime before she came to the US. His last known address was 25 San Stefanos St., Heliopolis.

If you have any information on my family or know where I can get information such as birth/death records, I would be grateful to hear from you.

Thanks!
Michelle

A PETMEZAKI FAMILY SEEKS OTHER PETMEZAKI'S…

May I beg you're indulgence by asking you to take a few moments to read the following and give it some thought?

My name is Denis Petmezaki, my sister is Daphne and my mother was Florence. I seek contact with anyone who bears this surname or perhaps knows of a person who does, or did. I am hoping to discover relatives.

Demetri Carolumbus Petmezaki, my father, was born in October 1895; his father was with the Greek consulate service in Ephesus. He and his two brothers, Kosti (b 1893) and Spiro (b 1897), left Asia Minor in appx 1920 and set up as planters and merchants in Anglo Egyptian Sudan. They also operated in Nigeria and Ethiopia and had offices in London and New York.

I am most anxious to make contact with anyone who might be of the Petmezaki family or who might just know of anyone with this rather unusual name.
Chalom Family, Heliopolis

I'm trying to find information on the Chalom family who were based in Heliopolis from probably the late 1800s to the mid 1900s. I say 'based' because it's not clear to me whether they had Egyptian or British or Swiss nationality, and this is making them difficult to trace. The Family consisted of William (Willy) Chalom who we think was born in Egypt around 1880 and his siblings Edwin and Daisy.

They seem to have moved around a lot and the only hard data I can find on any of them is Willy's marriage certificate to Helen Hirsch at the British Consulate in Lausanne, Switzerland in 1919. We believe that Willy died in Egypt in 1946. No births, deaths or other marriages appear to be registered in the British Consular records.

I think the Chalom family were fairly prominent in Heliopolist at the time, and that some were lawyers. Can anyone help with any information or point me in the right direction to find out more?

Many thanks.
~Andrea

HELP? Benn born in Cairo, Egypt 1889

I welcome any suggestions for where to look next for
a Theodore Alexander Benn, b. 14 July 1889 in Cairo, Egypt.
He attended the British School there. His father (possibly Theo or Alexander) was believed to be in the shipping business and is listed as being born in France in the 1930
US census. His mother's last name was Tedeschi and
was born in Italy. Theodore Alexander Benn immigrated
to England before 1912 and married Beatrice Martin of
London area around 1912. They moved from London>
Glascow>Birmingham (England)>Toronto (around 1920)>
Rye (Westchester) New York.
To make matters even more difficult, a family rumor says
that the name Benn was shortened but unknown from what
name. My questions are: (1) Can copies of birth records
in Cairo be obtained from 1889 and how do I go about
doing this? (2)Can I obtain a list of students or find out
if there is a listing for Theodore Alexander Benn who
attended the British School in Cairo for perhaps the
years 1895-1905? (3)Are there emigration/immigration records from/to England, France or Egypt available and
how might I access them? (4)Is anyone familiar with
the British School in Cairo and can they tell me anything
about it? (5)Any suggestions for where I might search
for additional info?
I welcome all ideas for possible research on this line.

I am looking for any information on my father's side of the family. My father, Said Massoud, lived in Cairo Egypt before immigrating to the states. He had one sister, Mervet, and brothers Ali Mohammed, Amin Lotfy, Mustapha, and Essadein (who I think moved to France). His mothers name was Dowlet and father was Mohammed (who I was told was a judge in Cairo). I may be a bit off with the spelling of the names.

I have been unsuccessful in finding any details for my family. Any information on this family or tips on how to find information is appreciated. Thank you!

1919 Egyptian Revolution: Davies

Many many thanks for the info on this historical event and related subjects previously unknown to me. Walter William Davies was my distant relative by marriage. He was a Birmingham businessman, linguist and motor enthusiast residing at and assassinated in Cairo on 28 Mar 1919 when his wife was also injured. I have a British newspaper obituary and his death certificate and some photos of the family in Egypt. One of our family myths was that he was stabbed by his own servant while at dinner. Having read Mrs Baxter's mention of the Egyptian Gazette, I wonder whether copies are archived somewhere? I should also be fascinated to learn where he was buried - have the memorial inscriptions from any of the Egyptian cemeteries mentioned been listed? Most grateful for any help.

Please can anyone help! I am still trying to discover if it is possible to obtain copies of Court Records from Egypt. My grandfather was murdered in Egypt in 1919, I do not know where or when he was born. My only hope of finding out is to discover if his birth and birthplace are listed in the murder trial that followed in May/June 1919, possibly in Cairo. I fear that I will not be able to continue my family history on my paternal side otherwise.
Wendy.

Descendents of Prophet Muhammed

My name is Tareq Gamal El-Din Muhamad Othman "Hassan Atallah".

I am sure that my grandfather, Muhamad Othman was a proven descendent of Prophet Muhamad (s.a.w.). The family had the written genealogy until the 1980's, when it was in the hands of Abdal-Menham .... Othman. When he died, his sister was given the information, but she died very soon thereafter and we don't know what happened to the information.
They lived in in Kafr-Atallah in Al-Sharkiya, the eastern province of the delta of Egypt.

As far as I know, all the occupants of Kafr-Atallah are descendents of Hassan Atallah, who emigrated from the Hejaz to Egypt at the time of Muhamad Ali.

Mr. Sobhi Eid and Mr. Ahmed Wifqi Muhamed Yasin are in charge of an organization of the descendents of the genealogy of Prophet Muhammed (s.a.w.) in the Middle East, called "Nikaabat Al-Ashraf." (Al-Ashraf Union.) Mr. Sobhi's phone number in Cairo is 453-0622. The organization's number is 341-1962.

Messeurs Sobhi and Yasin have published a huge volume of descendents of Prophet Muhamed (s.a.w.). You may be able to order the book from them.

My grandfather, Mohamed Othman, had 2 brothers: Mahmoud and Mustafa.
Egyptian Railways

I have been doing research on my husband's family history in Egypt (we've previously had some great assistance).

There are now have a few more questions that I'm hoping someone can help me with.

We've discovered that - in 1838 Muhammad Ali, Pasha of Egypt, visited Sudan, bringing with him a number of European engineers as he wanted to build a railway to Khartoum.

In 1852, construction of the Egyptian Railway was commenced (Alexandria to Cairo) - presumably with the assistance of some of the European engineers. Does anyone know if there are any records of the early engineers ? Would the Railway Museum in Cairo be likely to have this information ? Is there an internet contact for the Museum (and would they be able to communicate in English) ?

Another question relates to the building of the railway. Would the actual railway track have been manufactured in Egypt, i.e. that molten metal was used to make the track in Egypt ? OR Would the track have been acquired from elsewhere ? Also, the engines and carriages themselves - would they have manufactured in Egypt or obtained from elsewhere ?

Between 1871-75, 201 Europeans were appointed to the Egyptian Civil Service. Would there be records available of who these people were ?

Any information would be gratefully received.

Any information on Fred Clifford Dennis ,born 1906 Knoxville Tennessee. His sister Joyce Lynn Dennis married in the NJAM family and is mentioned as living in Cairo,Egypt in Fred Clifford's Knoxville obituary in 1981. Fred Clifford Dennis was in southern Spain in the late 1950's ,probably was involved in the construction of the American military bases including Moron de la Frontera in Sevilla area, might have been a seabee(?).Also was at the military base in Yemen in late 50's-early 60's.In 1957 Fred Clifford Dennis married spanish citizen Aurora Garcia Diaz at either the American Consulate in Tangier,Morocco or in Gibraltar,UK about September 1957,son Raymond Fred Dennis born in Sevilla,Spain June 20, 1958.He was listed in the Knoxville City Directory in 1948-1949 . Then is missing till 1970 when he is listed again until his death in 1981.
I am trying to reconstruct the years he spent outside of Knoxville.
Thank you.
Sayess

My father-in-law, Mohammed Ibraheim Sayess, was born in Jaffa, Palestine, son of Ibraheim I. Sayess and Fatima M. Gawi. He had 1 brother and 3 sisters: Bulous Afif, Zahra Sayess, of Jordan, Safiya Sayess, of Egypt, and Rashida Sayess, also of Egypt. I would like to learn news of their families if possible.
