John STEVEN from Scotland to Africa

I am looking for any information on John Steven, my gr-gr-grandfather. On 26 Jun 1885 he was married to Mary-Maggie Thomson in Holywood, Scotland. My gr-grandfather, Hugh Murdoch Steven was born in Nov 1885. I know that John and Mary also had a daughter.

According to family legend, sometime after 1885 John Steven moved to Africa and was working as an engineer. After 7 years of separation from Mary, John re-married a Dutch woman and went on to have more children. I have been told that I have relatives in Africa and Australia.

If anyone has any information that could help me I would greatly appreciate it, I have been stuck on this wall for a long time!

Katharine Steven
klsteven@shaw.ca

I am trying to find info about a James Pratt from Sandhurst area, who was my grandmothers stepfather, he was a chef/cook at the military college and would like to find some info about him. He was born in Dec?1900. The year is right I do know that much. I doubt whether anyone would be alive now that would remember him but there maybe some history buff out there that know some info about the college, and knows of him. I don't any information about the family that he came from, although I do know that he did have some in Sandhurst and one of them married a german lady during the war, much to the disgust of some. I cannot remember her name only that she was very nice and friendly to me. Grandad lived in a really old cottage, not to far from the college. Please help
Belinda

marriage of grandparents - Winsall/Reay

hello I am trying to find the whereabouts of the church that my grandparents married in in either Apr/May/June/July 1944. On the records it states in the district of Windsor. The union was between Ernest Thomas George Winsall and Queenie Reay. Both have died now but would love to visit the church that they married in. Can anyone help me. I have a photo of the wedding and the archway leading into the church is quite big. The wedding itself was quite lavish by the photo's even for that period of time.
Belinda

Hi all I am trying to find some info about my grandad, whilst he was in the palestine police and also about his history in the RAF on his return in 1938-1939. He was born in Hendon in 1909. He ended up after the war owning his own garage/car lot in the old kent road after the war. He was married in Windsor area to my gran Queenie Reay but altough I know this to be recorded, I am not aware of where if someone can help me there too. He died in 1967 of cancer approx 9 months after I was born but it has been said that even at his worst he would push me in my pram around Sydneham/Forest hill area in London, where they ended up living. They had two daughters both are still living. Please can anyone help
Belinda

African Colony records early 1800's

Does anyone know how to research the records, including any census records, from when the Colony of Cape Town was ceded to Great Britain through the mid 1800's?

The 1850 census records in America list a McCratic family b: Africa, race black. However, when researching McCratic information at the Mormon Genealogy Library in Utah, it was suggested by library personnel that the race entry was most likely an error or rather, an assumption by the enumerator due to the place of birth given by the family. 1860 census records show McCratic families as white.

Since at least one McCratic family was b: Africa, would there be records available for researching the surnames and families who were sent to Africa for the new British Colony?

Would the records have remained in Cape Town or other African locations, or have been sent to Great Britain?

Thank you,
Lisa McCratic

From Devon, England to Table Bay South Africa. - BROADLICK

Hi there,
I am looking for information on John BROADLICK (born about 1834. Father Henry Broadlick) & family. John married a Mary Ann SPEAR (nee GLIDDON) in 1859 in Tavistock, Devon, England. In 1860 they travelled to Table Bay, South Africa with there then 3yr old Wilhelmina on the "Wellington" under the Aided Immigration Sceme. It is possable that Wilhelmina was Mary Ann's Daughter from her first marriage to William SPEAR. I beleive John was going to work for Phillips & Kings a copper mining company in South Africa. Any information on the above families or how to locate any information on them greatly received.

Thanks
Kylie Chaffey (NZ)

I'm looking for information on one of my relations who died in Africa on 24th October 1904. His name was Hugh McCall. He was born in Girvan 27th July 1878. I have no idea what he was doing in Africa or when he went there. I discovered his death there from a family headstone in Girvan cemetery. How would I go about looking for an African record of his death, as I am more than positive he is not burried in the family grave in Girvan. Any help appreciated. Fi

Accra at sea 25 Sept. 1932 on way back to Gold Coast (where he worked) from England - buried at sea. Any inform. of firm or period of time he worked there?
2. Firm at Curepipe, Mauritius - Charles JACOBS & SONS, Ooffices in Melbourne and Adelaide, Australia; own vessel trading between Mauritius, Australia, and in Africa - branches in Durban, East London, Port Elizabeth and Capetown, and agents throughout the TGransvaal and Rhodesia - mid- l800's to early 1900's. Member of family: Jaques JACOBS and wife Catherine (nee Wilkinson from Wales) had Sugar and Tea plantations, and owned "The Family Hotel" at Curepipe, Mauritius, which I think was sold around 1906/7 to new owner Mr. A.
Early American 1800 census records show a McCratic family who is listed in the 1850 census born in Africa. Although the name changed in later census including Craddock and Cratic, it is believed the variations are a form of the McCratic surname.
Does anyone know how to research the British records from when the colony of Cape Town ceeded to the British Crown in 1814? Angelo was from Loppia a small town near Barga in the province of Lucca in the region of Tuscany, Italy., and probably went to Africa seeking work. Thank you, Jacqueline

I am searching for any information regarding a Caroline MORIN (the christian name my not be spelt the correct way). She had a brother Victor and I believe her fathers name was August - mothers details unknown.
She was maybe born in Mauritius or La Reunion somewhere in the early 1800. Victor was born in 1833.
I believe that Caroline went to the Seychelles for a short time and then went to South Africa to live. Any information would be greatfull as my search has come to a dead end at the moment concerning these two siblings.

Trying to find trace of Wilfred Rudolphus Dearing supposedly originally from New Zealand & a wireless/cable operator in Nyasaland during First World War. He became a clerk at the Boma of Ncheu, in 1916 & eventually married Rebecca ("Reba") Joan Allan. Nothing more is known about him - where or when he died for example, but there may be more to learn from Reba's history. Her parents had been doctors at a hospital they built at the Zambezi Industrial Mission in the Ncheu District. Her father, George was buried there when he died of blackwater fever at Domboli. My knowledge of African geography is scant & I have no decent map so I hope this all makes sense in the context of modern African geography.

I am looking for any and all info on two missionaries that were possibly in the Belgium Congo in the early to late 1800's. The names of these missionaries were Robert Ray Eldred and Edith Lillian Beyers or known by Lillian Beyers.
I understand that as parents they possibly had a child while in the Belgium Congo named Philip Ward Eldred.
Please if there is any remaining records or history of any of this please contact me. I am quite interested in learning not only about my step great grandad but also about his parents.

My late grandmother-in-law was once asked by one of her older brothers to sponsor his family that they might emigrate from Africa where they had settled upon leaving Scotland and come to Canada. Nothing was heard of the family thereafter and I would like to find the descendants. The brother's name who lived in Rhodesia was either: William BLACK b. 1860; David BLACK b.1862; Hugh BLACK b.1865; Robert b. 1872 or John b. 1874. Sorry that I must be so vague.
TOGO West AFrica - Lawson Family Heritage

I was born and raised in ToGo West Africa, My language is French and I speak two dialects. My parents were also born and raised in Togo West Africa, and still live there now. But our last name is not African, it is American - "Lawson". I was told as a boy that one of my great grandfathers was taken as a slave to the U.S. but later this U.S. slave owner "Lawson", returned his many African slaves (He gave them his Lawson name) to Africa. Once returned to Africa, these slaves took on African names which were attached to their American names in order to distinguish separate family generations. My greatgrandfathers took the African name "Avla" and attached it to Lawson, thereby I have the name "Lategan AVLA-LAWSON."

I'm trying to find this Lawson family of the U.S. to find out more about my ancestry. Can someone help me? Please email avla33@yahoo.com

My GG Uncle Richard (Dicky) BELL is said, in my grandmother's notoriously unreliable Memoirs, to have "gone to Rhodesia to grow oranges" in the late 19th century. He has totally disappeared from our ken, and I would love to trace his family down to the present day - he is said to have had three sons.
If any of his kinsfolk read this, I have a huge database of information on other parts of the BELL family (descended from William Bell (1762-1834) of Dundee.

Looking for any information with ties to the name CRAWFORD especially with british west indian ancestory.. We have sort of traced the name originating in British Guyana in the 1800s with some sort of connection to Ghana in Africa. The british west indian islands in question are St. Kitts, St. Martin and Anguilla. We are unsure of the names of the slave ships that were travelling at the time so this makes it even more difficult to trace. If anyone knows of ships that transported slaves around the late 170ss through the late 1800s please email me. Any information would be appreciated.

Thank you
Ronnie

Known African ancestors

Do anyone know of their ancestory dating all the way back to Western Africa? If so, how do you go about searching for African ancestry. It is amazing how Alex Haley managed to search for his, and they didn't have the technology back then. I am an African-American who is of African, British, and Native American Ancestry and I want to know about my African Ancestry. I have read that our ancestors are from a part of Western Africa called the Western Sudan, where there were many cultural groups with their own customs. The problem is, I don't know my father ancestry or my grandfather's heritage.
My grandfather's name is Charlie Owens, Sr. He could be of Black-Indian ancestry. He was born in 1908 and died in 1971. I don't know much about him as he passed away before I was born. His mother's name was Sara, but I don't know her maiden name or the name of his father.
