John Neizer ~ born November 24, 1844 in Ghana, West Africa. Places mentioned as his possible birthplace are Saltpond or Accra.
Middle family name could be Amono as he had a gold handmade ring with the initials JAN. He is thought to be from the Ashinti Tribe.
Came to the US 'allegedly' to be educated???
His money was stolen aboard ship - ended up making his way in Salem, Massachusetts.
Married, had a family and died in Salem, MA., in 1906.
Widow was Catherine Ropes(Bradford)Neizer.
Would like to find out more about John/Johann Neizer/Netzer.

Actually My Neazer is from the Carribbean. I have book called Slave trade by Hugh Thomas Which bsically made reference to a Neizer family that heavly enaged in the slave trade. Thses Neizers worked for the dutch West India Company in Elmina which is present day Ghana. The Book mention Jan Niezer whose father was a German Surgeon named Johann Michael Niezer. Anyway Jan Niezer ended up Marrying a African woman and his family acutally were very wealthy slavetraders. Since most of the slaves from where I am
came from were from Elmina I wonder if that lineage of Niezers is realted to my my family somehow?

I am from Ghana but currently studying in the US. I am very confident that my mom had a friend who name was Amono Neizer from Ghana. I am not sure if that helps but I will be happy to contact my mom if you want me to.

Hi James,
I would be most appreciative of any information that you or your mother could offer me in my seach for the family roots of John Neizer, my husbands paternal great, great grandfather.
I misspelled the 'Amomo' name ~ the correct spelling is AMONOO with a hypen inbetween, Amonoo-Neizer - also the correct spelling of the tribal name is Ashanti.
There is not much more that I can share with you concerning John and his roots in Ghana. I can only document some of his life as told by his descendents here in the US.
Thank you,
Roberta Neizer

Roberta,
In your first post you said that John was from Saltpond.I am a little confused. Is he from Saltpond or the Ashanti region. If you could clarify that it will be a lot easier for my mom to get more information for you. There is a large Amonoo-Neizer family in Ghana. Saltpond is in the Ashanti Region and Saltpond is in the Central region. Saltpond is located somewhere between Cape Coast amd Swedru.
Please check out the URL below to see the map of Ghana.
I am very familiar with the area my self because I lived there for 20 years. Please clarify where he is from and I will do all my best to get you lots of information.

Hi James,
I do not know where John Neizer was born or where he was living before he came to the US. Possible places that I mentioned in my message were Saltpond or Accra. If he was of the Ashanti tribe then Saltpond could be a possibility but I truly don't know.
How large the Amonoo-Neizer family is within Ghana today is something that I have limited knowledge of however, I do know that Egya Amonoo-Neizer, his wife Bertha and some of their children and grandchildren live near Kumasi. Prof. Egya Amonoo-Neizer was the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Science and Technology until President Rawlings selected him to be the High Commissioner to Zimbabwe. Until recently he served in that position until Pres. Rawlings lost the election.
In 1997 my two daughters visited Egya and his family and it was during this visit that they learned that Egya did not know much about the history of the family and the eldest living relative, Aunt Effie did not know anything about a John or Johann. Pictures were taken in the Neizer house and on the wall is a LARGE photo/painting of Aunt Effie's parents who look to be quite regal in the way they were dressed. It seems to me that they were a couple of 'importance'. So that is where I am now - searching to find my great, great grandfathers roots. Egya considers us 'cousins' in some way but does not know where the connection is.
Do you know if there are government archives that one can write to in order to see if there could be records dating back to the early 1800's?
In order that we may keep in touch, here is my e-mail address; Rneizer@aol.com ~ I find it much easier to correspond directly. Hoping you and your family can help me.
Roberta

Got lots of the Neizers of Cape Coast and Saltpond as friends. I am sure they would like to learn more. Send your email address and I shall pass it on.

Thank you for replying to my inquiry. I have not been able to find any additional info on my husband's family from Ghana other than what I have posted on this site. Reference my message of 26 Jul 2001.
Would love to correspond with any family member who believes that they are connected in some way to my Neizer family. My email address is Rneizer@aol.com.
Ciao,
Roberta
