GOSS - Axim, WCA (Ghana) Baptisms?

I am trying to trace my fathers family tree. Proving a little tricky to say the least! His father originated from Axim and was a merchant seaman who settled in Liverpool. I have managed to trace his Merchant Navy records, but have now traced him further back and have logs that go further back than his merchant navy records. here is the 'rub' obviously I am unable to go to Ghana and find a birth or baptism record for him (navy records say he was born 1889, Axim) and that his father was John GOSS, Fisherman, Axim, how can I possibly find any info on him? I have been told that because he has a western name, he would have been baptised and that it was the custom to then take a 'Christian name' from the bible and then probable a surname of the priest/pastor who baptised him. Does anyone know if this is the case? All help gratefully accepted.

regards
Debs
