Nina Eleanor McMinn

I am seeking information about my aunt who lived in Nairobi in the mid-1950s. Her name was Nina Eleanor Bridgman (formerly Wheeler) when she first went to work in Nairobi. When she returned to England in 1957 her name (as recorded in the passenger list of her ship) was McMinn so I assume that she married whilst in Kenya.

Any help in tracking down this marriage (or advice as to where to search) would be much appreciated.

Regards

Chris Wheeler

As Kenya was a Colony it came under the jurisdiction of the Colonial Office, so the European public servants like prison officers would probably have been employed by the Colonial Office. This was merged into the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (1960s?). They have recently dispersed their library and records to a variety of places, including the National Archives, but if you google Foreign and Commonwealth Office Library there is a lot of information about what went where and, I understand, they still have a small unit which can give some information or point you in the right direction. Might be worth a look. You could also look at the South African records to see if you can find a birth for Jessie.

Good Morning Peter
Thank you so much for the reply. It is Angus Alexander Fraser Weir and his family and descendants who I am interested in. He was my great grandfathers brother. The family in Scotland have no record of him and this is the first solid lead for the family here in Australia that we have found in thirteen years. I would appreciate any information that you have on him and his family. We would love to find anything about this many and his family. Thank you again so much, Raylene

I am afraid I cannot be more clear., as occupation is unknown and when they moved, or even which generation moved to Kenya is also unknown. However Peter - yes Jessie Ferguson Keith is the wife of John Keith she is living there with her son, Kenneth James Keith. I got this from the Kenya gazette. I also have the burial record for John Alexander Keith, however I did not have the detail that he was an officer in the prison department, so that would be useful. However I actually do not know if he is one of my Keiths. I do not know how many children John and Jessie Ferguson had. Jessie may have moved to Kenya after John died, or they may have moved together after Kenneth James was born (Dundee 1889). In the 1881 Scotland census, John Keith is a fisherman and his father a shoemaker but I do not know what he did in South Africa. I cannot find a marriage record for John and Jessie in Scotland, or a birth for Jessie in Scotland. So I think Jessie was born in Africa and they met and married there. Hope this further detail isn't TMI :) Rachel

East African Railways, Colonial Office, just looking for land, farming, missionaries? The more details you can give, even if a bit vague can help people to help you.

It might be worth looking under Foreign and Commonwealth Office Library but you need to be aware they closed their library in 2008 and everything has been dispersed to "somewhere else". However if you trawl your way through their entries there is a list of "What went where" which incudes FCO Historians. I understand this is a unit still at the FCO and if you write to them and ask they would probably point you in the right direction about Colonial Records, which could help. However there is another problem and that is a lot of stuff is still awaiting cataloguing, e.g. the things that went to King's College and details are still not available. Just a suggestion - you will be no worse off than you are now even if you get no answer.

Ruby was born 1893 in India to Robert Henry Dowling, accountant, and his wife Jane Ellen Rutledge. She travelled to England during WW1 as a nurse, but does not appear on the Nursing Register post-war. She married Selwyn Simons in 1919 in Oswestry, Shropshire, England but they broke up soon after. Ruby next shows up in passenger list to Mombasa in 1924, again described as a nurse. Then she shows up in the Kenya Gazette as Ruby Eileen Simons, married woman, as a bankrupt in 1926. I can't find her in passenger lists returning to Britain and cannot find her in marriage or death records in Britain either. I've had a look in back issues of the East African Standard for 1926 - sadly only the Saturday edition is available in London - and can find no mention of her.
Two questions: does anyone know anything about her time in Kenya, before or after the bankruptcy? And has anyone any idea as to how to do more research?
Many thanks
Graham

Two of my ancestors - Charles Alfred Bungey b.4.3.1887 and William Walter BUNGEY b. 14.12.1878 lived in Kenya for much of their lives. Does anyone know anything about them or indeed any member of the family.

Robert and Annie Wilson were my grandparents. I am Peter Wilson' daughter. (There were four children. John (eldest), Roberta, Peter and Sibyl - sadly all deceased.

If there is anything I can help you with just let me know. Am in the process of selling and buying a new house, but after Christmas before I move, there will be time to look things up.I have some birth certificates which I can find and copy. You'll have to give me your address please.
I didn't know until now that Annie died in 1937. I was born in 1948. Do you know anything about Edward Lugard? Some cousin of Robert's I think (judging by appearances)???

All the best - Happy Christmas etc... Penelope Wilson

A few dates would help - even your own birth date because that can give an indication of parents' ages. When were they in Kenya, were you born there? The Kenya Regiment probably ceased to exist with Independence - where did they go after that?

CHARLES BRAND BLACK

No 3699 Charles Brand Black was a member of the Kenya Regiment, during the Mau Mau troubles. I believe he could be a relation of mine and that his father was Matthew Alexander Black (my Grand Uncle) who was a telegraph engineer in Nairobi, he died in 1951 and is buried in the Forest Road cemetary. I know that Charles applied for probate of his will in 1951.

I also believe that Matthew was married to Elizabeth Margaret Millar Baxter Black nee BRAND, she died in 1950.

If anyone can provide information regarding this or help throw some light on the subject, I would be most grateful. Thank you
John

Hello. Just wondering whether you have found anything yet. I'm looking for any autobiographical material by British servicemen in Kenya in the 1950s, in connection with a book I'm writing. There seems to be plenty about Suez, Malaya, Cyprus, etc, but very little about the last days of empire in Africa, at least from this perspective.
I'd be grateful for any pointers.
Tony Bianchi

Colin R Hill

Colin R Hill was the only son of Oscar and Olive Hill, my Great Uncle and Aunt. He was born in Worcestershire, England in 1926.

I know that Colin went to live in Keyna and then moved to Rhodesia, he used to write home and Autie Olive would give me the stamps for my collection. I undersand too that he was a free mason as was his father before him.

I do not remember ever meeting him but I do know that he was married to Erica and they had two daughters. I met Erica when she visited the UK in the early 70's for medical treatment and one of his daughters when she too visited the UK.

There is some mystery surrounding Colin's death; I was told it was a suicide but I have no other information about this.

I would be very grateful for any further help or information anyone can give about Colin. Thanks for reading this.
Helen
