Photographs and the American Colonization Society

Greetings,

Other than the obvious, such as the Library of Congress collection of daguerreotypes and images from the American Colonization Society, does anyone out there know where one can find old photographs of ACS colonists living in Liberia between 1860-68?

Likewise, does anyone know who would have been a "noted" photographer in Liberia at the time? That is, one whom the colonists would go to have "studio" portraits taken?

I have a very worn, very old photograph from approx 1866/67 taken in Monrovia of my 2nd Great Grandparents, Frederick K. and Sarah Ann Hyde, and their son. Looking to find the photographer, the story behind the picture (if it was an official portrait or just a family picture), or perhaps a better copy. I'm sure duplicate exists, perhaps in an old book...just a matter of finding who and where. Any suggestions?

Please feel free to take a look...and let me know.

Caldheron99@aol.com

Thanks.

Hyde's of Careysburg, Liberia - Frederick K. Hyde and Sarah Ann Hyde

Searching for additional information on my ancestor, Frederick K Hyde, from New Orleans, who traveled to Liberia from Baltimore in November 1859 with his wife, Sarah Ann on the Mary Caroline Stevens, eventually becoming a high-ranking government official. He settled in Careysburg, Liberia and lived there until 1867.

Hoping to meet descendants of Americo-Liberians or natives who’s ancestors may have known the Hyde’s; ideally searching for documentation of a personal nature, such as old letters and photos. Frederick was acquainted with the Cain’s, the Greens, the Lewis’s, Rev. John Seys and Rev. Mr. Thompson, all en route to Careysburg. Anyone out there related to any of these families? Please assist!

Searching for Information on my Hyde ancestor, who's name was Lillinie, but she may have gone by Lilly (or Lillie).

She was born in New Orleans in/around 1856.
She was the daughter mulatto daughter of Edward Caleb Hyde, MD and Clarissa Keith Hyde, his wife.

It's believed she may have left New Orleans and settled in Mississippi.
She may have gone by "Lilly" in life, but her name was Lillinie and often confused for Lillianna.

Any info would be appreciated. Thanks much.

Thomas Hyde – Left for Liberia in 1859 with John McDonough’s Slaves

I’m looking for information on my ancestor, Thomas Hyde, who traveled to Monrovia, Liberia with the American Colonization Society from the port of New Orleans in 1859 on the Ship Rebecca, with the slaves (the ‘estate’) of John McDonough.

I know the year he left, but I’d like to know when he arrived, and ultimately what became of him once he got there. He’s not listed in the 1870 census, so I’m assuming he died in Liberia. Just hoping there are resources out there that reference what the Colonization Society did with their dead (such as records, cemeteries, obituaries, etc). I’ve checked the AR – it’s helpful only to an extent?

Any thoughts out there? All suggestions appreciated. Or, if you have a Thomas Hyde in your line that emigrated to Liberia in 1859/60, please share.

I am hereby trying to locate information on the relatives, and the beginnings of my Great, Great Grand father; Bentick Sancho and his siblings; John and Tuckness Lambert Sancho.
There are a number of versions of their story, which has been handed down from generation unto generation – Various members of the Sancho family believes the forefathers departed from one of the following places; England, Spain, Belgian-Congo and Madagascar.
I believe the three brothers arrived in British Guiana in 1843, after spending some time in Barbados, from England.

Some folks believe there was a name change on their arrival into British Guiana, from either Sanchey or Sanchez to Sancho.
Therefore I would like to examine all the various versions of their story and also to explore the possible connections to the Sanchos of Liberia, Sierra Leone, U.S.A and the United Kingdom
I am interested in communicating with individuals and or groups, who will assist the Sanchos of Guyana in locating their true story.
