I think the thing in the guide was that births, marriages and deaths are not held by the national archives but by the department of home affairs which is not geared up for genealogical research. You can apply to them I believe - and that is detailed in the guide - but I, for one, don't use them and rely on the death notices in the estate files in the archives and various other sources. Most of my SA trees are from other trees and then from estate and other files found in the national archives.
