My mother's Aunt, Mary Ann Bell, left England in September 1907. I was told that she went to S.A as a Domestic Servant and would be in service for 2 years to pay for her passage and then would be free to do whatever she wanted to.
Could this story be true? if so what would she have done after working for the 2 years? She was 27 when she left England so would be almost 30 by the time she was free to do what she wanted. Any thoughts regarding this would be gratefully received.
