While "browsing" through familysearch.org's lists found this interesting note which may help someone - not my relatives,just thought I'd share it:
It's under South Africa Methodist Parish Registers 1882-1996, Cape of Good Hope, East London, Deaths 1884-1940:

"Sergeant Hall and Private Mercer were killed in action at Gamasiep(?) Kopje, Langeberg on July 30th, 1897 - accorded a public funeral at East London on September 19th 1897. Estimated that 4000 persons were present."
George HALL was 22yrs and William Mercer 20yrs both buried at East Bank Cemetery, East London.
