RHodesian Birth Certificate

I am trying to get hold of a copy of my mother's birth certificate. She was born in Gatooma, then Souther Rhodesia, in 1948. Is their anybody who can help me obtain a copy? Officials in Zimbabwe indicate that, unless a friend or relative in the country is able to assist with the application, it is likely to take as long as 6 months. I have no connections with Zimbabwe, and require this certificate as a matter of urgency. Is there anyone out there prepared to undertake this for me? I will, of course, cover all costs, and well as pay you a fee.

Many thanks.
Who was my mother's family? Maiden name FROST

MY mother Loreen Dalmira FROST married Thomas Herman Reginald INCHE (my father). They were married about 1960. I was born in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia).

My mother, Loreen Dalmira FROST, was born in Krugersdorp South Africa 1940 & died in Zambia 1967 at the age of 26. My sister and I were very young. She was 3 and I was almost 6. My father didn't share information so, unfortunately, I have very little to go on regarding my mother. Her family may have settled in Southern Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe.

On my mother's side I know that she was one of 8 children. Loreen's MUM, who would have been my grandmother, [UNKNOWN at this time] married two brothers. My mother's father was CEDRIC EDWIN EERWIN FROST. Her siblings from her mother's marriages to the brothers were: Lynn Frost, Tommy Frost, Bernard Frost, Cynthia Frost, Patrick Frost, Charlene Frost, Carmen Frost, and my mother Loreen Dalmira Frost.

If any of the above listed names ring a bell with you, I would truly appreciate hearing from you =)

Sincerely, Carol-Anne

Emile von Broembsen was involved in a murder case in Bulawayo, Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), in the late 1920s or early 1930s. Does anyone have any information regarding this man, or know any details of the case? I only know that he was tried for the murder of his boss, and that the investigating officer on the case was a (Sgt.?)Cyril Henry (Ginger) Newton. I'd be most grateful for any information whatsoever.

PALMER - Research in Umtali

At our recent PALMER Family Gathering in Upwell, Cambridgshire, some old family photos dating from the time of WW1 were brought along as Len, aged 95 had no idea who they were!

As it turned out, they helped break down one of my minor PALMER brickwalls - the photos were of my grandfather's cousin Marear and her family in Umtali in what was then Southern Rhodesia! Marear had sent these photos regularly to her sister, who was Len's mother.

Don't know yet if Marear married Tom before they emigrated, but her daughter Ethelinda [bn 1899] also went out to Umtali.

My cousin has all Len's photos to scan, as there are MANY messages on the back which I didn't get time to photograph on the day - being the organiser, I was here, there & everywhere.

So, does anyone have any pointers about research in Umtali? Am looking at joining the Rootsweb mailing list as well, but other ideas gratefully received.

Ann
Records Questions - Belgian Congo / Northern Rhodesia

I need some help figuring out a birth certificate from 1910.
The birth certificate I have is certified from the Belgian Congo, but the person was born in Kansanshi, which on a map is just over the border in Northern Rhodesia (western side of copper belt). Kansanshi was a mining camp and the only large city of the time period in this region would have been Elizabethville which was in the Belgian Congo (and incidentally where the birth certificate was certified). Today Elizabethville is called Lubambashi.
Can someone figure this out? I think maybe that the person was never born in the Belgian Congo but rather the record was just certified there. Technically Northern Rhodesia didn't exist yet until a year later, and at the time period -1910- the area was just a colonial province.
Has anyone ever had this happen to them with regards to research in Africa?

I am searching for information about my aunt (Agnes Fowler/Agnes Rowe/Agnes Rowe Chalder), her son (Alan Rowe), and her brother (Eric Edward Fowler), who was my father and a member of the RAF who purportedly perished in a plane crash while on duty in late 1945. In 1946, Agnes Rowe lived in “Belvedere”, 4 Windsor Grove, Morecambe. It’s possible she lived there earlier as well. Alan Rowe, was born 27 October 1944, but I don’t know where. On 30 November 1956 Agnes Rowe remarried a man named Alan Chalder. The family emigrated to “Rhodesia” sometime in 1955/56. They lived in Glendale and Gatooma during the period 1956-66. We lost contact with my aunt in 1966. If anyone has any information about this family, I would be very thankful.

David Simpson, a wildlife scientist I went to school with in 1971 at Texas A&M University. Dave (the son) would be about 70 if still alive; and I would like very much to make contact with him again. His mother's last known address was #8, 21st Ave. Famona, Bulawayo. The parents are probably buried locally in Bulawayo. Any information or suggestions are much appreciated. Please email me direct off-list.

cheers, S.
Anglo-African Who's Who 1907

I'm delighted to say that the reprint of Walter H. Wills' reference book "The Anglo-African Who's Who" of 1907 is now available through Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk.

It contains around 2,000 biographical entries on prominent men and women of Edwardian Africa, with around 300-350 individuals from Northern and Southern Rhodesia. Detail is very variable: for some entries there are dates of birth, marriages and employment history available, plus medal entitlements and bereavements; while others are much less detailed.

The status of the people listed ranges from kings and other traditional leaders down to very junior civil servants - for example, on page 327 are entries for two South African journalists, the Mayor of Bulawayo, a Rear-Admiral in the Royal Navy, a Rhodesian Native Commissioner, a South African hunter and explorer, and a Member of the Cape Legislative Assembly.

To assist family history researchers, I've put an index to the book online at http://www.jeppestown.com/anglo/content.html.
Hello,

I am looking for any information about my grandfather who was last seen in Rhodesia in the late 60's.

His name was Russell 'Rusty' West and his second wife was Elizabeth 'Liz' West. I believe she was previously married with a couple of children, but I don't know her maiden name.

I have posted some photos of them in Rhodesia in the 60s here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/18502488@N00/

Rusty was originally from the UK. He worked for Puzey and Diss Motors during the 50s/60s.

If anybody remembers Rusty or Liz, or if you know anybody who worked at Puzey and Diss Motors during the 50s/60s, I would be very grateful if you would get in touch.

Many thanks
Nikki

I am family of Jessie McMaster and Charles Robert Bodington who are made mention of on this website (Family "F7027")

They had a grand-daughter whose name is Maureen.

Maureen married Michael David Grant, who then had the following kids: Wayne, Vivienne (My mother), Saun and Nicolette.

(She then later married a Nicholson)

Michael David Grant(My grandfather) was one of 3. His twin sister Molly (who still resides in Zimbabwe), and younger brother Arthur (who now lives in Howick, South Africa)

Mike Grant's father was George Seymore Grant, and mother was Alice Gertrude Oliver(I understand the Oliver's might have come from Hastings, UK).

I am keen to know more about any of the family surnames mentioned here and people associated to them. Especially Grant and Oliver as I do seem to already have a number of the Bodingtons down on record.

Appreciate any and all help. (I will be asking more of my own family to try gain better facts, but till then I'll have my fingers crossed for news)

Information Please - Carl Arthur William FRASER

I am still looking for details of Carl Arthur William FRASER. What is known is this:

-	Adam Franklin FRASER married Emily Selina Rosa GATES in St Pauls Church Port Elizabeth on 15 September 1892.

-	Two sons were born from this marriage. Cecil John Adam FRASER, 22 July 1893 (died 19 September 1940) (Cecil was my grandfather)

-	and Carl Arthur William FRASER, born 2 October 1896, PE, on 30 November 1896, and baptised in St Pauls Church on 30 October 1896. He was known as William and Uncle Bill.

What I am trying to find is William's date and place of death. To whom he was married and whether there were any children from the marriage.

The last memory my dad has of his Uncle Bill was at the death of his father Cecil in 1940 in Pietersburg. William is thought to have lived and worked in Rhodesia around that time. As dad was very young when his father passed on, memories are sketchy but he does recall his mother talking about Uncle Bill being wounded at Delville Wood in WW1.

I hope that there is someone that can help and direct me to where I can find records of William.

Many thanks.

Regards

Kevin Fraser
Johannesburg, South Africa.
Researching names: FRASER, CHRISTOPHERSON, KNOTHE, HONEYBORNE, DUNSTONE.
kevinfr@icon.co.za

I know it's a long shot, but I'm trying to trace details of my husband's grandmother. I don't have a date of birth, death or even marriage. Her name was Lily Cadman and she married Lionel Cann Luff sometime between 1891 and 1913. The marriage may have taken place in South Africa, as they had a daughter, Sheila Anne, who was born in 1913 in Umtata in the Transkei. She divorced Lionel sometime before 1935 and moved to what was then Rhodesia. That's all I know. Can anyone help?

Regards,
Jean.

This was about 1956- 1960. On his way back to ZIMBABWE he died on the boat.

All contact was lost with this family.
One of the sons did ring ENGLAND looking for a FREDERICK POWELL but my uncle said he'd got the worng number, not realising he was after his own father, LOL.

Since then, nothing has been heard off.

any help ,connections, etc, etc.

Staffordshire is where EDWARD POWELL was born.
:-)
Elley/Jaguar/Rhodesia

I am trying to trace my Uncle and his family. I am not sure which city in Rhodesia he would have lived in.
His name is Fred Elley. He was born in Hampshire, England in 1918/1920 and would have emigrated to Rhodesia just after WW2. He was married to Patricia (I think, altho this may have been his daughter's name) and had three children The eldest was Richard Elley who would have been born in 1945 aprox., and he came to live in England.
I believe that my Aunt had cancer sometime in the 1960/1970 time frame and that Fred took her to the States to try and find treatment for her. At this point all contact ceased. My only other piece of info. is that he may have been in charge of the Jaguar auto dealerships in Rhodesia.
Any help or info would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Lesley
WARE family memorial (1895)

I am a local historian for the village of Charlton Mackrell in Somerset, England. Our parish church has a large brass memorial to three sons of Uriah and Ann WARE, who were all born in Charlton Mackrell.
One, James WARE, died at Kimberley, South Africa, on 6th June 1882 aged 27.
Two died at Wareleigh Gwelo, which I understand is now in Zimbabwe - William Arthur WARE died 9th January 1895 aged 29 and Henry WARE, Captain of the Rhodesian Horse, died 7th July 1895 aged 41. Am I right that this was before the Matabele Rebellion? - possibly connected with the Jameson Raid into the Transvaal?
I would be very grateful for any historical information or advice as to how we can research this family from England.
