Since the early 1800, the British businesses in Shanghai employed many Portuguese from Macau to work in their Import/Export offices and banking institutions. The Portuguese were excellent clerical workers and many spoke English and Chinese which made them valuable in translating and supervising the Chinese workers. Most were paid a salary less than English citizens but more than local Chinese. Their middle class status gave them a very comfortable life style and some married into the Chinese population producing many children. After the Communist Liberation in 1949, most foreigners including the Portuguese left Shanghai for all parts of the world leaving their children behind with their Chinese mothers. After 57 years most of the Portuguese descendants and their children have lost contact with their Portuguese parents and they simply blended into the Chinese community. Sometimes they were treated with prejudice by the Chinese population because of their mixed heritage so they tended to hide their Portuguese blood line. After 2000a.d. Macau was returned to China, the old Portuguese Government in Macau held millions of dollars that had been earned through mostly Casino taxation. One of the good things they did for the Macanese Communities that had spread all over the world was granting them with 12,000,000RMB for each social club. San Francisco with three clubs got equal shares, Vancouver has two clubs, There is one club in Toronto, Portugal, Australia, Hong Kong and Brazil. Some clubs have as little as 200 members. Shanghai has an estimated 4000 Macanese and they should be entitled to a similar grant. Anyone in Shanghai who has a Portuguese heritage or knows of anyone who does is encouraged to contact me at my email address: If there is a sufficient response, I intend to hold a banquet for everyone to meet our Macanese friends and relatives with the intention of forming a Macanese Social Club in Shanghai. I have a three volume book of Portuguese ancestry from Macau and would like to trace your ancestry as a free service.
My best regards, Leonard Rivero
