I am looking for a great-uncle who moved to the area of Kobe, Japan before WW2. His name was Sam and he had a wife named Fanny. His last name could have been Evans or Wankoff (yes, that could have been his name). He owned a successful business as a ship's outfitter/ ship's chandler. I know that he wrote and spoke English well although he was born in the Ukraine. He survived the war and was visited by a cousin who was offered a job in the business.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
