looking for Maesaka

I've traced my mother's side back to Japan. My great grandfather's name was Kiyoji Maesaka b.11/13/1883 in Yamaguchi, Ken, Japan. His wife was Saki Nakagawa b.5/5/1895 in Uma-machi, Japan I believe. I think Kiyoji's parents were Yasutaro Maesaka & Kina ? Does anyone have any further information for this line? Kiyoji and his wife migrated to Hawaii around 1900. I'd love to find some earlier Japanese records but the distance is proving to be somewhat of a barrier. I'd also like to find some pictures of my early Maesaka relatives. Thanks to all who can help!

TKK passenger records

I'm searching for a way to verify a passenger who left from Honolulu, Hawaii, to Yokohama, Japan, in 1920. His name was Hikotaro Sakamoto and he was a Japanese citizen. He was on the SS Persia Maru, a ship on the Toyo Kisen Kabushiki Kaisha line. That company was bought by Nippon Yusen Kaisha in 1926, so I assume that is where the passenger records would be. The ship was bound for Yokohama, but I believe they made a stop in Nagasaki, which is where I think Hirotaro would have disembarked. Unfortunately, I do not read or speak Japanese, so I have no idea how to access those records, assuming they still exist. Any guidance will be greatly appreciated.

I know this is a long stretch but I am going to put this out there in hopes that there is a reply to it. My father has since passed on but when he was serving in the Army in the Korean War in the early 1950`s he met a woman named Michiko and they had a relationship together. I know the odds of me finding this woman are a long stretch but if she sees this or her family does it would be worth it. My fathers last name was Eads. Thanks in advance!

I believe i found pictures of her from the 1920's to 1930's. She may actually be about 7 years older than what we were always told. She had a marriage (possibly) in Japan before marrying my grandfather in the 1950's in America. She may have a daughter in Japan, Masako.
I have been searching for my kumon as well.
However, I don't find the citizenship records listed anywhere.
Hisae had five siblings ....her parents were Akio Yamagata and Yayo Nakamura (maiden name)....
How do I start research in Japan?

Do you know Chieko's surname and where she was from?

My Japanese mother is from the same era as your daughter-in-law's maternal grandmother. I did actually find some good information via Ancestry.com when I found the ship manifest from her journey here in 1952. I would start by searching for Chieko Weir and see what turns up on Ancestry.

If you know her surname and where she was from, it might be a little easier to find information about Chieko. Is your daughter-in-law's half-Japanese parent still living? They might be a good source of information.

I know that my grandfather was born in Los Angeles, Ca, traveled to Japan to marry, and left Japan after my father was born in 1954. Unfortunately, that's about all I know.

I'd love to hear from any potential family members, or read up on any information you have have as to the origin of my surname....should we share one (mon perhaps?). I know that "Nakazawa," like "Nagasawa," is more than likely of Minamoto origin, but that's the extent of my knowledge.

My grand parents had this made out of thousands of gold origami cranes for their 50th anniversary which hung in their living room so I know its definitely the correct mon. Please see the attached. There is no entry in the book for a burial for her but what follows below indicates that at least as of 15 Mar 2011 she was still alive.

Googling I found this: "3/15/2011 6:30:19 PM ...
looking for my brother

Hello i am looking for my brother, although he may not know he has any sisters, and i really don't have much to go on. My dad was in the British Army stationed in Japan end of WW2. My dad mentioned a few places he was in while in Japan but I suspect it was in Asakura where he met a school teacher who had either 2 or 3 children already. My dad mentioned that the mother of his son didn't want any support finacially from him and when he was stationed in Korea he spent his R & R in Japan and saw his son although the son didn't know who my dad was. My dad said he had blonde hair and the boy was around 4 years old when he last saw him. We only found this out after my mum died (she knew) but dad would not tell us his or her name, and it is hard knowing you have a brother and don't know who or where he is. So I surpose i'm asking where can I start to look for him.
Here is a snippet from my dads journal in which he mentions places he was in, in Japan
After the voyage of about five weeks we docked at Kure Japan. At Kure we boarded a train for our destination Izumo - Imachi. We spent two weeks here before
travelling to our next destination. We were stationed in Kyoto, a very beautiful city with a
magnificent castle. We also went to Hamada where they have a huge statue of Buddha that you
can go inside. Our duties took us to other places that I cannot now remember. We left the main
Island of Honshu to go to Island of Shikoku.
We were stationed at the city of Noichi, (On Honshu we were stationed just outside Hiroshima ) The Battalion had its headquarters in Noichi but had detachments at various locations. I was with
one of these detachments in a small town of Asakura, I was attached to Brigade HQ with the army
Kinema unit.
Is there any other sites? Thanks for any help and or ideas

We recently discovered an old photo of a gentleman named Tachibana Kakuzo. The photo is from about 1904 and the writing on the back indicates the portrait was made to commemorate his attendance at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis. The photography studio is given as being located in Tokyo. Tachibana Kakuzo graduated from Meiji Gaukin University in Tokyo in 1902. Please contact me if you have this gentleman in your family tree, we would be happy to reunite Tachibana-san's family with his photo.

No, I didn't find any new info re. our genealogy. I don't know much about the Sato family. I'm thinking that my great-grandmother (Yoshi Sato Asano) emigrated to HI in the late 1890s. My grandmother was born in HI in 1902. The only info I have is that we have a relative in Shibata named Jo Sato. I'm planning to request our koseki. If I ever find out, I'll let you know. Good luck in your search too.

My great-grandparents were also from Niigata (a town that is now Tainai City, which I believe is in close proximity to Shibata). My great-grandmother's name is Matsu Sato (married to Nakamura), and she was born in 1875. According to my great-grandfather's family registry, she was the 3rd daughter from the Sato family. She emigrated to Hawaii in 1909 and lived in Waipahu (Oahu, HI).

I've been so curious about my great-grandmother's siblings..... Did you happen to discover any additional information about your great-grandmother's family since your posting? Do you know if she had any sisters? =o)

This might not be related but my great-grandparents are from Niigata (Shibata). My great-grandmother name is Yoshi Sato (married to Asano), but her approx. birth year is around 1870s. They resided on a Waialua plantation (Oahu, HI). That's all the info I have at the moment.

Re: KERNAN FAMILY IN JAPAN LATE 1800'S

I have now discovered the names of the children and the correct surname of the mother, i.e. Nagashima. The children are Rei-Ichi Nagashima b. 1891 Yokohama, Kikugoro Nagashima b. 1896 Yokohama, Shunko Nagashima b. 1900 who married Eiichi Nato, Kou Nagashima b. 1894 Yokohama died in earthquake in 1923. Kiku Nagashima b. 1903. Kikugoro died in Hong Kong. John Kernan is allegedly the US vice-consul in Yokohama between 1893 and 1899, again allegedly appointed by William Howard Taft who later became President Taft. Rei-Ichi returned to Ireland and was known as Richard Kernan and became a respected architect being bilingual in both Japanese and English. Any information from the Yokohama area would be great! Kind regards.
John Beck
KERNAN FAMILY IN JAPAN LATE 1800'S

I am trying to locate birth/marriage records in Japan for Richard KERNAN b. abt 1892 Japan, father John KERNAN who I think was posted to Japan via the Irish government. I further understand John KERNAN married a Japanese citizen possibly with the surname NAKASHIMA. I have also located three other children from this marriage, James, Rosena and Mary. Richard KERNAN is back in Ireland by 1901. I would welcome any information possible on this family. Finally, all the family are Roman Catholics.
Kind regards.
John Beck
Barnoldswick, Lancashire, United Kingdom

Searching for local birth registration for Westerners in Yokohama 1872 - 1878

My great grandmother Annie Crockett Young was born to a US father and British mother in Yokohama on June 20th, 1872. US consulate records have not been kept for this time period. There are no records in British Consulate records either.I am also searching for a local birth certificate for Annie's younger sister Eugenie who was born in 1878 in Yokohama.

Any suggestions on where to start this search and if anyone can help me in Yokohama, this would be most appreciated.

Sue Larkin
