Scottish soldiers in the Baatan march?

Has anyone else heard of this? We were told by family legend that my Great Grandfather was in the British Army and somehow ended up in the Philippines where he married, had a few kids, and then was seized and participated in the Baatan march.

I've been trying to find "evidence" that this could be true at all, and have yet to find anything corroborating this story.

His name was Robert MacGavin. He married Ceilo de Otero, a Spanish girl living with her aunt and uncle.

If anyone has any info on anything, please email me!
Thanks
