Does anyone know who Anniewatte near Kandy was named after?
Several up country plantations got there names after the Scots planters especially from the Laurencekirk area who worked there. Moray Group and Castlereagh now inundated, the latter probably Irish. There is a huge map of the plantations of Ceylon c1920? which shows my own maternal grandfather's one which he patriotically named St. George,Galagedera, the locals called the area Nariwatte which seemed appropriate as the jackals around wailed nightly. It was sold to a Beedi merchant who renamed it Lotus.
