What was her name and was it her birth name or adoptive name? Have you tried looking for her on the English birth index. Her parents may have been from Guernsey, but they may have evacuated and she was born in England. Most of the ones I know of still called themselves Guerns (Guernsey) even though they were born in England during the evacuation.

people wouldn't have been able to get out of the island in 1940. when the island was occupied ..there could be a possibility of inter island adoption with Jersey , this was still happening not so long ago..

I am looking for records dating back to 1940 for births on Guernsey, Channel Islands. I have a birth date for a relative of November 1940, she was adopted soon after and raised in England. She was adopted in England before the end of German occupation. We can't find any records in Guernsey relating to her, and I probably think this was because her name was changed. Also, how would it have been possible for her to leave Guernsey when the only evacuation I can find was in June 1940.

There is a "Strangers Register" held at the Island Archives, whit copies of the index also held by the Priaulx library and the Family History section of la Sicietie Guernesais. It date from about 1890 to 1912 and is confined to those that did not own their homes or paid less than 3s and 6d. a week rent. It is by no means a complete register, but if your people are registered there is quite a lot of information in regard to origins.
Illegitimate Sweet child

I am researching my late grandfather's history and family tree. It is a longshot but I am trying to find out who his father may have been. Here is the information I know about him:
His mother was NELLIE GERTRUDE SWEET never married.
She had a partner FRANK EDWARD SMITH with whom she had at least one child, Frank Edward (Jr). This child went on to join the Marines in the 1940's.
In the Guernsey 1911 census, Nellie was listed as living at No. 2 Pont Renier Cottage with her mother and father- William Sweet and Elizabeth nee Ring. They came from Meriott in Somerset as did a lot of farmers around the 1880's and settled in Guernsey having around 10 children including Nellie.
I discovered that in 1912 Nellie became pregnant and was sent away to London to a house called Home of Hope in St Pancras, London where unmarried mothers were cared for and came to give birth. I have no idea who funded this charity or how she came to know of it.
At the time she got pregnant she was working as a domestic servant for someone unknown in the Village du Putron. It is very possible she was working for someone in the du Putron family because after the WW2 her son came to rent a house from Edwin O. de Putron- Pierre Percee House in Prince Albert. Edwin died in 1944.
I am trying to find out therefore who fathered my grandfather- Frederick Charles Sweet who was born March 1913!
it is a longshot but may be some of the details may jog someone's memory somehow.
The following information I would like verified but don't know where to begin as records from Guernsey are not available online.

The following children were born in Guernsey in the St Peter's Port area of Guernsey and possibly St Anne's Port of Alderney. The parents are Thomas Palmer and Elizabeth Palmer nee Bowden and both were born in England. It is not known if they were married in England or did this in Guernsey.

Frederick Palmer born 1829
Thomas Palmer born 1830
Matilda Palmer born 1834
Samuel Palmer born 1838
William Henry Palmer born 1841
Henry Palmer born 1844

Any information would be received gratefully and fee given for any documentation (within reason).

With regards

Alun

Hi Tina

We have communicated before and I am still awaiting information from you via email. Alas it didn't arrive.

William Henry Palmer b1841 Guernsey d15 Apr 1896 Cardiff Glamorgan Wales. He married Selina Susan Stedwell b1842 Plymouth. They married in 1861 Cardiff Glamorgan Wales and they had 7 children. William and wife must have moved back to the Channel Islands as there first son, William H Palmer was b1866 Alderney.

His father is Thomas Palmer b1803 somewhere in England who married Elizabeth Bowden about 1829 and they had 6 known children.
Hi there, as gsy girl said, there are surnames Gauvain and Gavey here in Guernsey- and also Gavet, so I think Gauvey might be derived from any of these. They are well established names, all three still appear in the current telephone book. It may well be worth joining the Guernsey Family History group on facebook, I am a member- unfortunately I won't get to the Priaulx library for some time as I am about to undergo surgery, but someone on the site might have connections to that name. Good luck!

I am seeking information about my ancestor, Roland Touzeau. I would especially like to know who his parents and grandparents were. He was recently married (spouse unknown to me)and living in Guernsey in 1792 at the home of a Capt. Lorray(sp?). I know only that he had a grandmother named Mary Touzeau and an uncle and cousin, both named Thomas Hartley. In a letter, GM Mary calls the cousin Tommy Hartley. I think Roland may have had a daughter named Elizabeth Touzeau who married Stephen Martin. Stephen and Elizabeth also had a son named Stephen Touzeau Martin who emigrated to the U.S. in 1872 and died in Nebraska.

Carol, I believe the tenant of Herm that you mentioned was my g-g-grandfather, Stephen Touzeau Martin (23/01/1820-02/12/1894). He was married to Anna Elizabeth Sachet and lived in Guernsey until he emigrated to the U.S. in 1872 with his son, Roland Touzeau Martin. I believe his father was named Stephen Martin and his mother was Elizabeth Touzeau. Elizabeth would have been born around 1800-ish.

The two adult Abraham couples that appear in the Guernsey census for 1841 were born in England and France respectively- unfortunately, it would be almost impossible to pin down any exact ethnicity, as the name Abraham is one that turns up in almost any European country, because generally the name has Jewish roots.
Hi Susan,

I see from the 1911 census that Elizabeth was born in St Helier Jersey, and was just married at the time to Malcolm John Robert and living and Havilland Farm, St Peter Port. Havilland farm is in Les Hubits, in a valley near the southern boundary of St Peter Port.
Your mention of Les Blanches Cottages is interesting as my Grandparents lived nearby- my father recalls a family living in one of the cottages and an older lady in another, but doesn't remember her name unfortunately. It is possible that his sister might recall the old lady so we will ask her when we can. If she has any knowledge of her I will pass it on.
Andy Smith
