Fletchers of Dearham, Cumberland, England

Im a newbie to this board and I am trying to get in touch with Claire Dawn Wilson who in 1999/2000 was researching the Fletchers, mainly from Dearham. I live in NZ and recently started my family tree only to discover that Claire has the same ancestors as I have. As the posts are old the email address is no longer correct.

I have hit a wall with Abraham Fletcher as to when and where he was born. He married Elizabeth Donald 1 Feb 1821 in Dearham.

Would appreciate any help. Thanks

Hi, Thank you so much for responding. My grandfather survived the war and lived to the ripe old age of 81 and although I believe he was in the Border Regiment, I can find no trace of his records. He was born in Keswick and must have enlisted in Carlisle like his brother Walter, whose records I can find.
Your response is greatly appreciated though,
Many thanks
Enid

I have come across another Haughan I haven't seen before...
She is an illegitimate child born to Wm Haughan of Bewcastle and Agnes Kinnear of Kirkpatrick Fleming. The baby was born in Annan in 1842 so presumably this was Wm fils rather than pere.
Entry 26 Apr 1850 in the Annan Old Church Kirk Session Minute Book 1804-1854 (available with all other kinds of goodies by post(order online) from the Family History Society of Annan)
Entry reads:
"Agnes Kinnear: Res. with husband William Roddick, Merkland, Kirkpatrick Fleming. Previously res. with mother at Dumbretton. Has two children aged 8 and 5 still unbaptized. Minister of KPF to rule on discipline and restoration of privileges. Fathers Wm Heughan (sic.) of Bewcastle and Robert Carruthers."
In the 1851 Scottish census, Agnes and William are living in Kirkpatrick Fleming. The children are all surnamed Roddick but there is Elizabeth b.1842 in Annan and Margaret b.1844, also Annan. The other Roddick children were born in Kirkpatrick Fleming.
Elizabeth went on the marry John Law in Longtown in 1860.

As I say, she is a new entry to me but if anyone else knows anything more, I would be delighted to hear from them.

Thanks for your reply!

I was actually thinking of the published books.. St Bees, for instance, (amongst others) is available in 3 volumes, transcribed by H.B. Stout and published by the Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society.

I had hoped someone might be prepared to either sell their copies or send (electronic?) copies of the pages that refer to a few limited surnames. The books are fully indexed so fast and easy to use.

Are these books available for reference in the Whitehaven Archives??

I live abroad so can´t access the data easily eg. in the SOG in London. I also live just to far away from my nearest family history centre to make it worth a trip. Having said this, is it possible to take home microfilm rolls from a family history centre or must they be viewed in situ? If so it might be worth my while buying a microfiche reader...

Thanks for reading! I hope you can help!

This info was obtained off the marriage certificate of Charles S. S. Chambers and Agnes Cowman.

Then two different people have both written up the details onto the collated results sheets which have then been gathered up one after the other and stamped with the folio numbers. Why the results were written up twice we may never know. Possibly the two people were not aware that the other had done it. Possibly the first write up was done in pencil and it was decidedd that it had to be done properly in ink but they forgot to dispose of the pencil copy.

As for "which is right" - no way to be sure so as with any record get some verification from other sources like baptism records or other censuses.

Bryan
ps I see that it is only the second set which shows the marks which the enumerators made when totting up the numbers of men, women, married etc. So theses people were not counted twice in the numbers in the county.

1851 Census West Linton duplicate forms - which is correct?

I note that the 1851 Census forms for the district of West Linton in Cumberland (district 8a) have 30 sheets. Sheet 2-16 run through the district. Starting on page 17 the census repeats iteslf going over the same entries.

Whilst the house entries and names are the same many of the relationships are different. On page 1 Elizabeth Bell is listed as "Aunt" on page 17 she is listed as "sister" likewise sons are changes to stepsons, servants to sons.

WHy would this be and which would be the correct entry

I am stuck on this branch of my tree. I am looking for information about her husband, last name Cowman. They have children starting in 1911. Phoebe grew up in Workington, Cumberland. The children are George, Richard, Agnes, Gilbert and Ethel. A few of them were born in Cockermouth.

Any information that points to Cowman's first name and lineage is greatly appreciated.

Bob

Searching for Brocklebanks !!! I found this entry and I'm trying to find more information about the Brocklebanks.
Re: CRAGGS & MARINERS
JDeney Posted: 6 Apr 2013 6:34PM GMT
Classification: Query
I noticed this because my uncle Bill and his brother Charles were both involved in ship building here in the US during WW2 off the shore of LA California. Uncle Bill never told anyone what he was doing and would be gone up to a month's time. My Aunt hardly ever knew when he would have to leave or when he would come home. So I definitely know his family was connected to the Shipbuilders of England. His father Alfred A Brocklebank came to the states in 1883. I believe Alfred's father name was Thomas Brocklebank (his wife Margaret). They are found on the 1920 Denver, Denver, Colorado Census. And Thomas is also found on the 1910 Census of Mercur, Tooele, Utah next to his son Alfred & his family. I'm trying to find a online book of the "Brocklebanks 1770-1950" by J F Gibson, 1953, but am unable to. If anyone has it, could they see if Thomas & Margaret's family is listed. I'm really curious now.

They married in 1917 and Nellie went over to Canada on the Olympic in July 1918 . Nellie was my great aunt and I'm hoping to find someone who can shed some light on the mysterious adoption of my mother by her brother James - maybe some family folklore?m

I would be pleased to exchange data on the Nicholson family, even if they are from different families. I have all the census data cd's for Cumberland 1841 to 1901 with full access to 1911.
best regards
Allan

allanhilton602@btinternet.com

John Nicholson is my great-grandfather. If this is the same person you are interested in, he was born 9th June 1859 in Flimby, Cumberland and married Ann Cochrane from Maryport. His parents were Joseph Nicholson 1833-1903 (born in Branthwaite, Dean, Cumberland)and Sarah Scott 1835-1912 (born in Flimby, Cumberland). If we have mutual interests perhaps we can communicate via emails?

Trying to find my great grandfather John Nicholson in the 1911 Census. His wife Ann and children are listed as living in Maryport. He was a miner-hewer and I suspect he might have been at work but can find no trace. Any help or advice would be gratefully appreciated.

Hi Neil,

Although Frederick is also a family name, and you do have a Henry born at the right time, there is no knowledge of an Irish or Scottish connection with our Jordans. As all of my Henrys sons, and he himself, were quarrymen based in Leicestershire, it would seem that we do not have the same family. Strangely enough, they nearly all worked in Scotland at different times, one son at least stayed in the
Oban area, and his descendants are still there.

Best wishes
Jackie

Hi Jackie

Sorry for the delay in replying. I have a copy of the marriage signatures of Frederick Jordan (my GGGG grandfather) and Mary Stockdale in St Michaels Church in Workington. I do have a record of a son of Henry born about 1907. Frederick Jordan was a Royal Navy Seaman and they relocated to Ireland (Belfast) where another son called Joseph (Customs Officer) was born in 1809. The family stayed in Ireland until the potato famine in 1840's and they moved to Campbeltown in Scotland until the 1900's then moved to either Glasgow or Liverpool. I do not have any information about Henry other than the birth/christening. I am not aware of any connection to quarrymen. Neil Jordan.

Strange first names - where are they from?

Hello, I'm researching the Stamper family from Cockermouth, Cumberland. Due to their unusual first names I have been able to find out quite a lot about the family but I would like to understand why they might have such strange names.

John Stamper was born in 1809 (son of William Stamper, tinsmith) and became an attorney. He married Jane White (daughter of George White).

They named their children:

Alvise La Fin Stamper
Melanchthon P. D. Stamper (don't know what the P.D. stands for, perhaps Pattinson Dirigeme, as per his brother and sister)
Elizabeth Pattinson Dirigeme Stamper
and
John Richard Pattinson Stamper.

I don't know why they named their first son 'Alvise La Fin' which is a motto for a Scottish clan (Kennedy) and means 'Consider the end'. I haven't worked out a family connection to a Pattinson. Melanchthon is a famous religious man connected to Luther. 'Dirigeme' is similar to a word found in a latin prayer (does it mean anything else? is this actually a name somewhere?).

From articles I have found about them in the newspapers (John turns up a lot being an attorney) they don't appear to be particularly religious. (John lends people money and then takes them to court when they can't repay). Was there a trend at the time to turn away from traditional names?

I think Jane's father (George White) may have been a yeoman but I'm not sure what that is (I have found a few different definitions).

I don't have names or any information about John and Jane's grandparents to see if there is any link there regarding names, etc.

John and Jane moved to Australia in 1850 and on to New Zealand. Fortunately, with names like Melanchthon, they have been easy to trace across the world!

If anyone is able to shed any light on these names or trends regarding names in this time period I would be very interested to hear from you.

Thanks!

Janelle
Thanks Weatherhead but I think this is the same report Kobie has already posted here for me. I have searched the Archive but not come up with much - its probably because I don't have the knack of knowing exactly what to search for? I don't have an account there either so maybe the search results are being limited?

The report I particularly want however is the one which would have appeared in the local Whitehaven paper as I hope that might include more details than the Liverpool Post though this may not be the case.

Thanks for your help/interest!
