Surnames: Welch, Paul
Ellen Elizabeth Welch was my great grandfather (William John Welch)'s sister. Their mother was Mary Ann Paul who must have been a sister of your John Paul. Mary Annn Welch (Paul) seems to have died in childbirth in 1876. Ellen Elizabeth Welch went from Bridport to Oldham to work in Gundry's cotton mills as a 'cotton operative.' She eventually returned to Bridport having picked up elements of an Oldham accent. She ended her days as a spinster living with her step sister Louisa in a house in Victoria Grove (interesting to know whether it was John Paul's old house at 109). There was a 'Mrs Paul' who was still closely linked with the Welch family in the 1930s and 40s.
