I looked in the Middleton St George parish record for the years 1780-1790 and there were no Watson baptisms in the records. There are several Middleton's in Co. Durham-Middleton St. George, Middleton-in-Teesdale and another Middleton near Stranton (Hartlepool area) Was he married when he left for the US? Any children born in England? Names of children? All might give a hint if someone finds him. Janis

Mark Watson died in 1856 in Pittsburgh, PA and was 72 at the time of his death.

No, that Cuthbert NATTRASS was christened in 1814 the son of Joseph and Alice. He immigrated to Wisconsin then California.

If you're still interested in the "Durham Book", it is probably Whellans' 1894 Directory of Durham. This was the second edition but it is the best known. The first edition (1855) can be read on-line, via Google Books.

As a small child I remember my grandfather owning a large book and kept it on a top shelf in a tall press. He called this book 'The Durham Book', and would often sit me on his knee and show it to me. In it was all manner of things relating to Co. Durham and local happenings in and around the Chester-le-Street area. Most important thing of all was details about the Charlton family. My grandfather was Joseph Victor Charlton who married Florence Brown. When my grandmother died in 1948 and my grandfather remarried a short time after against the wishes of the family, the family went their own seperate ways. My grandfather's second marriage only lasted a few short years before he died soon to be followed by his second wife. What happened to that book remains a mystery. Does anyone have any knowledge of it. Perhaps it has found it's way into a second hand book shop or whatever, and been picked up by some interested genealogist - I would love to think so. If any one can shed any light in this direction, I would be more than pleased to hear from them.

This may not be connected, but there was a George BOOTH baptised on Nov.12th.1823 at Sunderland. Parents: George Booth and Elizabeth Hazen. (According to the Family Search).

There could be a number of reasons why one member of a family was brought up in a childrens home and another was not. What year are you talking about. If the mother died, and left a very young child, this child may be taken into a home and older children left to look after themselves. If you give us some names and dates, then it may be possible to check when their parents died, and if young children were left. The mother may have been ill, and unable to look after them. Years ago, there were childrens homes all over the place.

I am also researching a Booth family in Sunderland and by chance have ended up with the same 24th October 1875 marriage certificate for Mary Jane BOOTH & Richard POLLEY. I am fairly certain she is part of my tree, and her brother William, and that their parents were George BOOTH initially a ropemaker and laterly a mariner, and their mother Elizabeth TUCKNUTT. As it's a while since you posted and had replies I wonder if you have made any further progress.
It would be good to find a definate link. If not I do have a lot of Booth data in Sunderland.

I came across your thread on Roots and wonderd if there may be a connection and i may beable to help you.

My great grandfather was George Parker and he married Mary Hannah Verrill (born 1864 Staithes ) in 1883.
They had a son Joseph in 1885 and a son John in 1888 and other children.

Mary Hannah died in Gateshead in 1891 and George went onto marry Mary Jane Coates, In the 1891 the family was living in Heworth the address was Friars Goose but after that their mother Mary Hannah died in 1891 and i have not really been able to find them, they may be with relations as they were very young when their mother died.

I think i have found a marriage for Joseph to Esther Watson in 1912 they lived in Heworth/Gateshead, but i have not looked for a marriage for John born 1888.

George went on to marry Mary Jane Coates in 1892 and they are my great grandparents, their son William Coates Parker was my grandfather, give me a shout and i will see if i can help you

Does anybody have any information on these people
Florence FOSTER Born 1891 Gateshead, Robert HERBERT no year of birth as yet they married in 1913 Sunderland.
They had the following children
LILIAN HERBERT 1915
ROBERT HERBERT 1917
ANNIE HERBERT 1922.

On the 1911 census florence was living with her sister and brother in law in sunderland.
There names are as follows
Lilly FOSTER 1878 and her husband John Henry NICHOLS.
They were living at new water works Dalton Le Dale Murton S O Easington.

Does anybody recorgnise any of the names above if so please contact me any help would be much appreciated

I have one of those. Have their marriage, and then daughter born in workhouse and later father is listed as single later at his brother's house in a census and the wife and daughter visiting at a friends. Never found them again. Did find his death some year's later. And the daughter getting married. Nothing on the wife.

The 1911 census has a James W. Duggan age 4 with widowed mother Jane Ann Duggan, age 38, brother Alexander age 20 and a sister Edith who is 10, all born Jarrow.

You don't give us much information to work with.

According to the Free BMDs, there were three deaths recorded of a Crosby Gray. Quarter-ending Sept.1886, South Shields District; quarter-ending Sept.1901, Sunderland District and quarter-ending Dec.1910, South Shields District.

I know that this post was made a long time ago, but thought I'd better reply anyway.

My friend's great grandparents were Thomas Burns (c 1875) and Agnes Dalgarno (c 1876). They were married in the South Shields district in 1896. My friend's grandmother was one of their daughters - Jessie Burns.

I have the marriage certificate for Mary Ann and John Thomas (they are my gg grandparents).
I'm just very curious to find out what happened to Sarah, her husband John is living with his brother in the 1891 census and he is classified as single. I can't find her under her married or maiden name - it's a mystery.

I am trying to find details of my GGGG Grandfather. He was named Crosby Gray and was born in Botany Bay,Australia abt 1807.
Last records I have is 1881 census when he was living in Jarrow, Co Durham.
I assume he died and was buried in Jarrow area.

I am researching my own family tree, my grandfather was hilton gray- the son of george gray. George Gray was born in 1838, the son of Crosby Gray and Jane Oxberry. I am not sure that the Crosby Gray you are researching is the same person, although they all lived in Jarrow or Chatham
in Kent. I wuld be interested to know how you researched the Australian link.

Ron, your problem may be the same as one which had me flumuxed for a few years.

There is a 50% probable marriage in Q3 1852 Tynemouth 10b 192 between Joseph Tunnicliffe BAINS and Sarah STAFFORD.
So try looking for the baptism of a Sarah E. A. STAFFORD - the illegitmate child of Sarah STAFFORD who later married Joseph BAINS and therafter was know by the surname of her stepfather.

You might also find Sarah STAFFORD and her mother Sarah STAFFORD in the 1851 census.

I am intrigued by your discussion and I don't know if my connections fit. I've been studying the BRABANTs through Elizabeth Jane b.1863, Sunderland, d/o John and Eleanor (Storey) BRABANT. Parents both died and she emigrated to NZ with her aunt Elizabeth Ann REAY. Elizabeth Ann was b.1842, Sunderland and was d/o of Richard and Jane COATES. Her COATES cousins lived in Hartlepool.
