Marriage of a Widow in the Church of England in 1900

We have the marriage record of a couple who was married in the Church of England in 1900. The bride was a widow, and is listed as such in the record. My question is this:
In order to marry in the Church of England, would the bride have had to prove the death of her first husband? If so, where would a record of such proof be kept?
