Holmes & Ellen were married around Pittsburgh supposedly in 1853, but neither Pennsylvania nor Pittsburgh recorded marriages at that time. Some of their children were also born there but, again, no records required. Church records for the area from the time frame are scarce as hens teeth.
The problem here is that when the iron industry started going south around Pittsburgh, Holmes moved his family to Elmira, NY, where he was a boss roller. Had they remained in PA there likely would have been more interaction with Ellen's family and more information would be available.
Again, thanks for the motivation. I will let you know the results of the order.
