Horace W. Wallis B-August 6, 1869, Turnbridge Wells, Kent Co, England

Below is a Biography written in 1927 about a son of my GGGrandfather, Horace Wallis & his wife Ann Clark, who were married in Frant, Sussex. Their son, Horace W. Wallis, was born in Turnbridge, England. The Bio says Sussex, but I have just discovered Turnbridge Wells is actually in Kent.So here it is that I look. At the bottom of the page is some new information reportedly on this Wallis family which I am trying to validate. I see on message boards that there are baptisims for another Horace Wallis with a wife Heneretta in Turnbridge Wells. So I am not sure where that will lead.
So, if anyone can help, I could sure use some.

1927 History of Monmonth and Warren County Illinois

P 544 WALLIS, HORACE W., one of the successful farmers of Swan Township, is also a well-known figure in the stock business of this locality. He was born near Turnbridge Wells, Sussex, England, August 6, 1869, a son of Horace and Ann (Clark) Wallis, who came too the United States in July, 1870, and settled in Berwick Township, Warren County, where for a year he worked on a farm owned by Thomas Mann. For the next ten years he was engaged in farming in Greenbush Township, and then bought fifteen acres of land, section 15, Swan Township, too which he added until he had fifty acres. Later he sold this and rented land, section 23, Swan Township, and lived on it for seven years. Once more he lived in Greenbush Township, but since 1895 he has lived in Warren County, Iowa.
He and his wife had the following children born too them: Horace W., who was the eldest, was elected supervisor of Swan Township in April 1925 by a majority of 115 votes; Sarah Ann, who died in infancy; Thomas, who died at the age of twenty-two years; Elizabeth, who is Mrs. William Gillett of Warren County, Iowa; Lora and Nora, Twins, of whom Lora married William Crooks of New Virginia, Iowa; and Nora is now the widow of Frank Chittenden, lives in Buffalo, Missouri; Iva, who died in infancy; Emma, who died February 5, 1927, was Mrs. Marion Davis, of Warren County, Iowa; Minnie , who is Mrs. James Alexander of Warren County, Iowa; and Eva, who married Dan Carkler.

Until he was twenty years of age Horace W. Wallis began working by the month, and continued too do this until his marriage, in 1893, after which he rented a farm in Fulton County for seven years. Subsequently he bought a farm in Swan Township, section 26, of 160 acres, and conducted it for a year, and then moved too Avon, Illinois, and was engaged in buying cattle and hogs for a year. For the next two years he lived in Swan Township, and then moved on his present farm of 160 acres, section 24, Swan Township, which he bought in 1915, later buying the adjoining 160 acres, and he is raising hogs and cattle and does general farming. Since 1921 he has been in partnership with Arthur Wingate in the stock buying and selling business.

On September 28, 1893, Mr. Wallis was married too Minnie Belle Patterson, born in Greenbush Township, July 12, 1875, a daughter of John and Jane (Simmons) Patterson, natives of Tennessee and Greenbush Township, and granddaughter of John and Jane (McCoppen) Patterson, of Tennessee, and James and Malinda (James) Simmons, he born in Warren County, Kentucky, and she in Greenbush Township. Mrs. Wallis was born in Warren County, and her family early settled in Greenbush Township.

The following information was passed on to me. I am looking for any information on this family. Particularly Verifying that this Horace Wallis is the same Horace that marries Ann Clark 1868 in Frant, Sussex Co. That is my link that I need to validate.

Found the following in 1851:

Living at 29 Westons Cottge

Father - Abraham Wallis born 1818 in Wadhurst, Sussex
Mother - Sarah Wallis born 1820 in Rotherfield, Sussex
Son - James Wallis born 1841 in Wadhurst
Son - Horace Wallis born 1846 in Wadhurst
Son - Thomas Wallis born 1849 Wadhurst

Also
Jeremiah Wallis (Abraham's father) born 1776 in Wadhurst, Sussex

Hi

I was hoping some body might be able to help me with locating where this church is/was as I have had no luck finding it.

I have tried googling and looking on the LDS family search site for mention of it but haven't had any luck.

I think that it is/was most likely located in either Chatham or Woolwich in Kent but not sure.

I have recently been given memoirs of a family member which states that quite a number of my ancestors were christened at this church so would really like to find records which either I could look up or that some body else has access to but to start with would just be happy to find out where the actual church is.

Any help appreciated

Mabel in Oz
Glad to receive your note - I have the complete family of James Dixon which I suppose you have but not the succeeding generations. What do you need? Are you interested in the origin of the name Dixon? and how many generations do you have going back from the parents of James Dixon. By the way, the name Dixon has been carried on through Thomas Henry's family including the current generation. I also have info on some of the personal history of many of the individuals. I will add your info to Bertie & Alice Tumbers family to fill in some of my blanks. My husband had his DNA taken to establish a link with the Drayson Knowler family & we are still working on that one. Wish I could directly email. Just so happens I have a retranscribed copy of an old Family history stating that George Bain's father Alexander Bean had taken George to Woolwich when he was a boy and they had dropped the Mac while there? this would be around 1780's , This Alexander MacBean matches up for almost everything, also found a brother named William Frederick MacBean. Any help with this is greatly appreciated Thank you Name changed from Bean to Bain around 1830's in New Brunswick Canada

KENNETT - Whitstable Parish Registers Look up

Hi, I'm new to this board and I am researching my KENNETT family history. I have been trying to locate a baptism record for my 3x Great Grandfather, Stephen KENNETT. The only information I have is from the 1841 (Margate St. John) Census which states his age as 34, born in Whitstable, Kent. I also have a BT stating that he died in Margate St. John age 79 in 1880. Is there anyone who has access to the Whitstable Parish Registers who could look up my ancestor for me. I am not able to travel to Kent. Thank you.

Thomas Lee, Birling & Letitia ?, Luddesdown

I have hit a bit of a brick wall - I have Thomas Lee and his wife Letitia in the 1851/61/71 census with alot of children, including two sets of twins. My problem is in finding Letitia's maiden name - none of the online records for the births of their children note it - all I do know is that she was born in Luddesdown abt 1820.
Thomas and Letitia would have married in 1844, probably in the Malling district. I found an entry for Thomas Lee in the Sep qtr in Malling - there were 3 marriages on that page and the brides names were given as:
ACKHURST Jane
EDMONDS Ann Elizabeth
STUART Eliza
No Letitia............which I have considered could have been a pet name.........but their first daughter was named Letitia.
Their second and third children were twin girls and one, Emma, married Philip Fissenden - thats the line I'm following.
Can anyone help with this?

GGGrandmother Sarah Ann MUNDAY born 1846 Biddenden

I believe her father was George MUNDAY born abt 1801 at Biddenden. If I am correct, she had about 15 brothers and sisters. She was briefly married to an Albert Hills but became widowed and went on to marry Thomas GREENGROW. She definately had a brother Samuel MUNDAY b abt 1845, Biddenden, Kent. In the 1871 Census Sarah Ann Hills as a widow is recorded as being at her brother Samuel's home with his wife Elizabeth and his children George, John and Louisa Munday. Do any of these names sound familiar to you? I am stuck. There seems to be quite a few Munday's in the area!

I believe her bros and sisters were:

Emma, chr 28 Apr 1833 at Biddenden
George chr 28 Apr 1833 " "
Betsy chr 9 Oct 1836 " "
Thomas chr 7 Jan 1837 " "
John chr 27 Aug 1840 " "
Ann chr 27 Aug 1840 " "
Russell chr 27 Aug 1840 " "
William chr 4 Jan 1841 " "
Eliza chr 29 Jan 1843 " "
Samuel chr 19 Nov 1843 " "
David chr 13 Jul 1845 " "
(Sarah Ann chr 27 Sep 1846 at Biddenden)
Alfred chr 29 Oct 1848 at Biddenden
Albert chr 9 Feb 1851 " "
Moses chr 29 Aug 1852 " "
James b abt 1854, Biddenden Kent.

All of these names have made my mind boggle, and I have ducked tracing this line, but now I am eager to get to the roots and piece my Mundays' together! Can anyone help me! Pretty Please. email me at : yolanda_dean@hotmail.com. much appreciated. Merry Christmas to you all.

Capt John Hall of Blackheath/Greenwich approx 1770/1850

Seek any & all info (BMD,burial site) of above. Capt Hall was, in the last chapter of his career at sea, captain of merchant ship "Lady Blackwood" engaged in Bengal/Calcutta to Mexico/Chile trade from about 1820-1830. In December 1838 he was living in Home Cottage in Blackheath (now #18 Blackheath Park) an attractive Georgian house built in 1824. An extract from his ships log appears in Alexander Forbes book, History of Upper & Lower California, published in London, 1839. In 1840 "LadyBlackwood" was sold to the Campbell family in Sydney and she sailed as a whaler 'til about 1860 when, I believe, she was wrecked on the coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia. If YOU know someone who is familiar with Greenwich area history please have them conact me. I live in California. douglascvernon@yahoo.com THANK YOU.

Coastguards in Kent

Hi I have been researching my ancestors and one in particular is Thomas Phillips (or Philips) from Cheltenham b. 1811 app. I have tracked him to Seasalter, Blean sometime around 1839 onwards for a bit and Whitstable. He is listed as being a Coast Guard. By 1871 he is a Greenwich Pensioner which I believe is Coast Guard related. I was wondering if anyone had any information about the Coast Guards about that time in particular in Kent and even any specific information relating to Thomas?

Many thanks
Melanie
Can anyone tell me, or point me in the right direction to find out the regiment that was based at "The Barracks" during the 1881 census, as my g-g-grandparents were there at that time. My g-g-grandfather was a Private soldier "William Hayden" and they had been in India during 1876 where my g-grandmother was born. I would be grateful for any help as we have so much info with this small but important bit missing.

It looks as if the Maxim Road in Crayford has been swallowed up in recent times but may have still existed in 1939. And the Maxim Road in Erith today looks too short to have a number 25.

Many thanks ... John.

ROBSINSON in Chatham Kent

I am currently researching a family line for a potential historical documentary for BBC TV but have hit something of a barrier and am hoping someone might be able to help.

I am trying to trace living descendants of EDWARD GEORGE ROBINSON. He was a master mariner, born Sunderland 1834, died Sunderland 1931.
One of his family lines leads to Kent.

His youngest child GEORGE ROBINSON, was born in Sunderland 1871. He married Alice Herring on 01/11/1890. They had 3 children.
MARGARET ROBINSON was born in 1891 in Sunderland but died the following year.
GEORGE ROBINSON was born in 1895 in Sunderland and
ALICE ROBINSON was born in 1898 in Chatham, Kent.

According to the 1901 Census and Alice’s birth certificate it seems GEORGE ROBINSON was a shipwright and had taken work at the Royal Naval Dockyard in Chatham. I can find no records after 1901. The local council archive says the electoral registers around that period have not survived.
The Dockyard informs me most of the records for this period have also not been kept.

I seem to have run out of options and ideas so if anyone can help I would be very grateful.

Chris Jackson
Chatham Naval Memorial

Hello. I am looking for volunteers to take some photographs of particular names noted at the Chatham Naval Memorial in Kent, England.

In particular, I am looking for the following:
Able Seaman Victor John Clews (unk-29 Jun 1940), Royal Navy,
Note: C/SSX 21474 (I have no idea what that means), Plot 35 1.

Although this particular name is a shot in the dark for me regarding my own family history, I am also interested in engaging the interest of others who might be willing to take photographs and submit them to findagrave.com. Normally, within the US, that is, volunteers living near particular cemeteries would accept requests to visit the cemetery and snap photos of requested gravesites, tombstones, etc. I, myself, visit cemeteries when I travel to assist with this effort. However, for the sites listed outside the US there is no such system.

If you are interested, please visit findagrave.com for more information. If there is a similary preservatory site for England's cemeteries, i would greatly appreciate knowing.

http://www.findagrave.com

Many thanks!

I'm not sure exactly how large the town is, but if anyone has baptism registers for Rochester his baptism record would be greatly appreciated.

He was tried/sentenced at theKent Quarter Sessions on 3 January 1839, given a life sentence. He'd previously spent 2 months in gaol.

I'd be pleased to hear from anyone else working on the BLISS family in Kent.

Marriage in Episcopal Church at Canterbury and Births in Woolwich.

Hey everyone, I'm trying to find more information on a set of my ancestors that, according to one of their daughters' obituaries, were married Oct 14, 1807 in the Episcopal Church at Canterbury. The couple was Thomas Mooney (from county Derry, Ireland) and Mary Care (who was most likely a local). They had four children in Kent: Ann (Mooney) Gustav, Charlotte Mooney, Thomas Mooney Jr. and Elizabeth (Mooney) Malott. Thomas and Charlotte died in infancy. Ann was born August 2, 1808 in Woolwich, Kent, England and Elizabeth was born Novemebr 9, 1810 in Woolwich, Kent, England. If anyone could help me out with any information or records on these people (I think church records would be most helpful), I would be extrememely thankful.
CONSTSABLE/CRUIKSHANK

Hello there

I wonder if some kind soul would be able to look up marriage in parish records for me please.

My maternal great-grandfather's sister was Elizabeth Cruikshank and she was born in the March qtr. 1847 in Sevenoaks.

She married William Constable in the December quarter 1871 in Sevenoaks, but by the 1881 census she is shown as a widow and living with her children Laura (born about 1865 before her marriage to William), William James, Alice, Alfred and Ellen and her mother Ann Cruikshank, at 158 High Street, Sevenoaks.

I have all of the information about my Cruikshank family but am having difficulty finding out where William Constable was born, or who his father/parents were.

The only reference I can find that might fit the bill is a William Constable serving as 3rd engineer on the Alalaga Vessel in Freshwater, Isle of Wight.

Does anyone have access to parish records who could look up the marriage for me and let me know the name of William's father. Elizabeth's father was William Cruikshank, who will show as "deceased". on the marriage document as William Cruikshank died in the June qtr. 1870 in Sevenoaks and presumably is buried there.

I live in West Yorkshire so I'm unable to search parish records and, as a pensioner, sending for searches and certificates can be very costly. Any help at all would be very much appreciated.

I would be very pleased to solve this mystery so that I can fill in the details, as all I have at the moment is his name.

Thank you for taking the time to read my message.

Brenda.
