Joseph & Mary BOYFIELD RIPPIN had 4 son's born near Grantham, Lincolnshire, Eng: William, Ambrose, Benjamin & Joseph Richard RIPPIN, Jr. They all (except son, Ambrose) emmigrated to Geelong, Victoria, Australia in 1852.
Joseph & Mary's 2nd born son (my gr-grandfather), Ambrose RIPPIN emigrated to America the same year, 1852 when he was 17 years old. He married & raised his family in Lake County, Ohio, USA. The family in England sent letters in 1860 & 1870's about Aunt Allen & Uncle John who lived at Rippingale; Cousin Susin wrote from Bitchfield saying she got married in Nov 1863 and said her sister Charlotte living in Grantham has been married six or seven years and has 2 children. Uncle Benjamin BOYFIELD went to Stowgreens Fair.
The ship "Chance" left Liverpool, England 24 July 1852 with 467 passengers and about 50 died in passage. It arrived Melbourne, Australia 26 October 1852. Passengers # 275 , 276 & 277 were my gr-gr-grandparents & their youngest son: Joseph RIPPIN age 43 an Agricultural labourer; Mary RIPPIN age 44 Wesleyan Religion & Joseph Richard Rippin, Jr. age 4. Eight days before the ship "Chance" sailed, the ship Ticonderogan left Liverpool 1 August 1852 with 646 souls on board and 168 died enroute. It arrived Melbourne, Australia 22 Dec 1852. On the passenger list was William RIPPIN age 21 Wesleyan Religion from Cornwall, the eldest son of Joseph and Mary BOYFIELD RIPPIN. Joseph & Mary RIPPIN and their 4 son's were all born in Lincolnshire, England. I believe their 3rd son, Benjamin RIPPIN b 1837 also emigrated to Australia but I have not been able to find him on passenger lists.
Joseph RIPPIN served as a councilman in Bannockburn Shire and for 20 years ran his business, the White Chapel Farm at Darriwill. His address was Maude, Darriwill, Sutherland Creek, Geelong, Victoria, Australia. In a letter from Australia to America in 1870, Mary BOYFIELD RIPPIN said her 18 yr old son, Joseph Richard Jr. had taken to visiting the wineries. She talked about her husband, Joseph's death 31 Jul 1873 describing the burial place at Lethbridge with an iron chain around the plot. She said her oldest son, William RIPPIN had "married a widow with a small boy, Johnny”. He lived at 2 Albert St., Ballarat, W. Vic. Australia. There was a William RIPPIN born in Leicestershire who married Eliza Ann OWEN in Victoria in 1866 (Reg # 4114). Was this Joseph & Mary RIPPIN's son?
It was this oldest son, William, who wrote the last
letter that arrived in America in 1874 telling that their 70 year old mother had died. The youngest son Joseph Richard RIPPIN, Jr, about 22 years old when his father died was to continue running the Joseph Rippin, White Chapel Farm at Maude, Darriwill, in Geelong, Victoria. Joseph Richard Rippin, Jr. died at age 75 in HASTINGS (a town on the coast). I'd like to find out what happened the 3 sons that lived in Australia (William, Benjamin & Joseph); if they had any descendants and what happened to the farm in Darriwill.
The Digger Pioneer Index Victoria 1836-1888 lists Albert RIPPIN and Mary CHURCH married in Victoria in 1879 who had about 6 children born between 1877 and 1887 in Caulfield, Prahran and Kew, Victoria (among them Joseph, Benjamin and William who died at age 6 in 1883). Were they related to my RIPPINS?
