William Charles HUNT or COOK

I am trying to confirm the parentage of William Charles Hunt b c 1847 in North Raucby Lincolnshire. According to the 1851 census his father was Jerry Hunt & he was living with his grandfather Thomas Hunt; and in the 1851 census he is living with his aunt, Ann Hunt.

However, his father is given as John COOK on his marriage certificate (1869 in Digby to Jane East)so it looks like he may have been illigitimate. Was his aunt really his mother? I haven't been able to find a likely birth entry online so far so I'd be grateful if someone could do a lookup for me in the records office if they're going in sometime.

Many thanks,
Edwina

I am looking for evidence of the birth of Elijah Watson my 2x great grandfather. He was born about 1802/3. He claims it was either Boston or Little Steeping, Lincs but I have not been able to find a baptism entry for him. He has children in Beds and Northants and from 1851 till his death in 1895 is in Stamford, Northants. Till I find his birth registration I cannot find his parents. One of them might be a Needham as he calls one son Elijah Needham Watson. Any help welcome please.

Atkinson death in Timberland

I have a copy of an entry of death from 1875 for whom I believe is my 3rd great grandfather(Joseph Atkinson). The problem is that the witness (John Tyler) is listed as his son, but with a different surname. Now he did have 6 daughters, 3 of which I can nothing on, other than their approximate dates of birth(Betsey, Rebecca, and Hannah). So I'm guessing that either that the witness is either a son in law or possible he re-married and it could be a stepson. I looking for suggestions to help me locate any info that would be able to help me prove I have the correct death entry.

Mike

Shaws of Barton upon Humber

I am searching for documentation which will prove some connections between my Shaw family ancestors in this locality. Specifically:

William Shaw was born in 1757 in Barton upon Humber. I believe his parents were George Shaw (born bef 1731) and Elizabth Nainby (born c 1740). I have a marriage record for them, but no record indicating that they are William's parents.

I believe that George Shaw's parents were William Shaw (born about 1690?)and Mary Foy. In this case, I have no marriage record or birth/christening record which substantiates the link.

I have searched the Ancestry.com databases for England and Lincolnshire but with no success. I would be very appreciative of any advice or information you could give me.

Thanks!

Steve Read

His wife was Elizabeth and had two sons George (b. 1833) and William (b. c.1837), but I'm not sure whether they were living with him at the time.

Thanks in advance,
Alexander

They had 8 children born from 1841 to 1851. One, Joseph Good b. 1842 m. Ellen Hyde in 1864 and emigrated to New Zealand the following year.
HYDES John b. Abt 1822 m. Sabina Abt 1841. Ellen was one of 6 siblings born between 1842 to 1851. I suspect that other siblings from this family also emigrated to New Zealand, and like the Good family settled on the Canterbury Plains where they were involved in farming

Hi it would seem strange to have 2 posts, but they are different sides of the family. William Edwards Millner was his nephew.
Charles was born in Gainsborough, and left searching for work all over the north of England, settling in Driffield, Yorks. Of his 6 children the most successful was Harry Gladstone Millner b 1867. Who became a Salvation Army Office. his son Harry L b1891, was to emigrate to America where he was to meet up with his mother in 1929 after his father had died, and his mother Emma b1869 had sailed to Canada (on her own)to visit her nephew Alfred Redpath b1909, she then crossed into States at the Niagara Falls boarder, where Emma was met by her son Harry.
Would like to know anything about each of these boys, and did they have any male heirs? Regards Tim.
Samuel Rouse married Elizabeth Frances Stevenson, probably in Stamford in 1784. They had 5 children between 1786 and 1791.
Apparently "Miss Stevenson" had beautiful arms, and was painted. Not sure if it was just her arms 'borrowed' to put on someone else (!), but it sounds as though she came from a good family to be a candidate for painting.
Anyone looking at this chappie? One Uriah Loughton was a witness to my grandfather's marriage (and possibly his Best Man) in 1915. Since the above-mentioned one is the only one to crop up in the 1901 census index I would be interested to hear anything about him.

Cheers

Stu

Does anyone know the history of Sleaford Workhouse in its last years? Was it renamed as Slea View? How would I discover the names of its occupants in the early to mid twentieth century? In its later years was there a scheme to encourage former "inmates" to live independent lives in rented accommodation in Sleaford - so forming small "hostels", which housed groups of people who were not related?

With many thanks for any help with this, Mary

Hi

I was oping someone might be able to shed some light on one of my relatives.
I have William Slight son of Shadrach and Ann Slight born in Toynton All Saints in 1779. I found a marriage for Shadrach to Ann Smith in Langton by Spilsby in 1768. I have also found a burial for a Shadrach Slight in Boston Lincolnshire in 1794. with his age taking his birth back to the mid 1740's. the problem is i'm struggling with his baptism. I can't find him anywhere. I would think from looking at the IGI that he would have been born in either Toynton or Bilsby.
Any help much appreciated

Thanks
Richard

Where do I go from here?

I have traced my Warriner ancestors back to 1778 in Saxilby, Lincolnshire (Thomas Warriner was born in 1779 to Thomas & Ann Warriner, who were married in Saxilby in 1778). I have today searched through Saxilby parish baptism records from 1740 to 1778, and found no more mention of the Warriner name, so even though Thomas & Ann were "of this Parish (Saxilby)" at the time of their marriage, I am assuming that Thomas at least must have been born elsewhere in the county/country. The question is, where? And how do I find out without trawling through every parish in the country?!

This is the first time I've got far enough back with my research to use the parish records, so any help would be gratefully received :o)

Leah.

Matthew Botham mar. Martha Jackson Dec 1815 in Keyingham, Yorkshire. They had at least 3 sons-Richard 1816 (Paull), William 1823 (Keyingham) & Matthew 1826 (Paull). Richard mar. Frances Drakes in Lincolnshire 1841. Frances Drakes was born in Tealby, Lincolnshire, in 1814, dtr of Thomas Drakes of Tealby (1841 & 51 census). I would like to contact Drakes in the Tealby area or find any Drakes from this area-any descendants would be great!

I have been unable to locate a definite chr/birth record for Matthew Botham who would have been born abt 1770-1796? I suspect his wife Martha Jackson chr Sep 1795, Keyingham, York., dtr of John Jackson, is the Martha Botham, found in the 1841 census in the Lincolnshire Lunatic Asylum.

Richard Botham (b.1816) took his children & wife to the US in late 1861 where they seemed to settle in the Pacific NW-Oregon, Washington etc.

Hi looking for any help finding out more info about the above. I know he married Mary in 1814 and they had 5 children, Frederick 1815-1892, Winnifred, Thomas 1818-1908, Mary, Betsy 1832 & James 1828-1919.
Our family is descended from his son James but I cannot find out any more information about James Campbell senior other than he may have been born in 1780 or 1793 and that he may possibly have died in 1835. I know the whole family lived in Grimsby from at least 1780 - 1900 after which they moved to Aberdeen. Thanks.

Family story says John Beecroft came from Lincolnshire to Canada circa 1838. No proof so far. Saw on a BBC TV show "Escape to the Country" a property called "Beecroft cottage" in Mareham le Fen. Anyone know of any Beecrofts from that area that may have had someone come to Canada in early 1800's?

My earliest Beecroft I have was said to have been born in Lincolnshire before or about 1820. He married here in Canada in July 1839 and his wife's name was Eliza Ann Mills. The marriage registration has the notation beside the marriage " 85th reg't of foot" leading us to surmise he was a member of that regiment that was in this area in that time period.
The family has a history of naming children after family, unfortunately there are not many unusual names in the family (John, Mary, James, etc). The most unusual that do not seem to show up in any other branch are George Gervis, Rebecca and Frederick Ebenezer. A family story mentions Grimsby, however I have no documents to back that up. I know this is not much, and the 1841 census probably isn't early enough, but now you know why I was clutching at straws when I saw the program on TV.
I have tried to contact the regiment website but cannot get anyone to respond to my emails.

Fisher Families: Swineshead and Coningsby

In the 1851 Coningsby, Lincs. census John Fisher, age 54, widower with children, Sarah (11) and Edward (9) was listed. John had married 1832 at Coningsby Maria Townhill (1805-1847), d/ William & Elizabeth. The census shows that John was born at Sutterton. In 1797 at Sutterton, Lincs. John Fisher, son of Thomas & Sarah, was baptised. Sutteron is located east of Swineshead and the same year a John is baptised, son of Thomas & Sarah. Both baptisms appear to be the same man. In 1861 John Fisher emigrated to Will County, Illinois where he died in 1868. In 1796 at Swineshead, Thomas Fisher weds Sarah Eaton baptised there 1774, d/ Richard Eaton & Sarah Collingworth. John's daughter Sarah Fisher (1840-1917) wed William Day and emigrated 1861 to Will County. Edward (Ned, 1842-191) emigrated to Illinois and later moved to Cherokee County, Iowa. John and Maria Fisher had two older children living elsewhere by 1851. Daughter Jane (1825-1912) married Thomas Kirman and in 1871 they also emigrated to Will County, Illinois where they eventually farmed in DuPage Twp. Son William (1832-?) is apparently he (born Chapel Hill, Lincs) who in 1881 was living at 142 High Street, Kingston, Yorks with wife Sarah and children Martha (1855) Arthur (1865) Albert (1867) Ernest (1873) and Walter (1876). Would welcome contact with others researching Fisher families of Swineshead and Coningsby.

This one may be a bit of a dead end. I have found what looks very likely to be the christening details of Richard Jackson in Boston,1817, but it only has the mother listed- Mary Jackson. I have looked at others in the batch and there are two others with only Mary noted-no fathers name.
Is it likely that she was a single mother and if so would the children have been allowed to be christened?

Can anyone find Mary jackson in 1841 living in Boston?
Children may be William b1827, Mary b 1826, Johnb1813.

Many thanks.

My gt gt grandfather retired to and died in Scarborough in1927. His father was John Houlton who was born in Lincolnshire in 1816. John married three times. His first wife Sarah Dawson. They were married in the parish of Wrawby. They had a daughter Christiana born in 1843 who later died. Sarah died in 1844. He then married Ann Fisher in Hull. His residence on the marriage cert is Burton upon Strather in lincolnshire 1846. Ann died in 1849 in Hull. They had a son George (who could of been a twin because the time of birth is on the cert) 1848.

John then went on to marry Mary Ann Temperton in 1850. In Hull. He went on to live a good life with Mary who were the parents of my gt gt gf Henry. I am trying to find a connection to other Houltons in Lincolnshire. From the marriage certs I know Johns father was called Joseph. I do not know what his mother was called. Thankyou for any information.
