Hello Karina,

I found a great deal of information about the Gabbedey and related lines, some of which you may or may not have compiled for your grandmother’s 100th birthday in May. Most of the information concerns the ancestors, rather than the descendants of the Gabbedey and related lines who lived in East London. The information I found comes from various subscription and free online resources. I am not a descendant of the Gabbedey or collateral families, but wanted to see how much information could be found about them so that you could have the information ready for May, for your grandmother‘s 100th birthday.

For example I located the church marriage record for James “Gabberdy” and Susannah Sargeant at the Ancestry.com subscription website’s “London, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1921.” The record shows the couple were married in the St. Thomas Church of England, Stepney, on 11 September 1870. At the time they married both James and Susannah were living in Stepney. and were “of full age.“ James’s occupation is shipwright. James’s father is listed as Henry Gabberdey, whose occupation was labourer. Susannah’s father is Henry “Laws” Sargeant. His occupation is Spanish “Intrepter,” that is, an interpreter of the Spanish language. The clergyman who married James and Susannah was the church’s officiating minister, D. Carroll. The witnesses to the marriage were William John Williams and Emma Sargeant. Susannah singed the marriage registers with an X, though someone had penned her name into the record. A transcription of the marriage record follows:

I also located the General Register Office (GRO) marriage index for the marriage of James “Gabberdy” and Susannah Sargeant at the FreeBMD website at: http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/.

The marriage was recorded in the Mile End Old Town Registration District for the September quarter of 1870. GRO marriage indexes often include the names of more than two individuals married in the same quarter of the same year, in the same registration district. This is the case with the indexes where James and Susannah are found. Another couple is also listed. People in marriage indexes are listed alphabetically by surname. The index follows:

The marriage for James and Susannah can be found in Volume 1c, Page 979 of the GRO registers. If you don’t have a copy of the marriage record, you can order it from the GRO. This is not the same record as the church marriage record noted earlier, but will contain a lot of the same information. The least expensive method of ordering GRO certificates is to order them online, and by providing the Volume (1c), and Page Number (979), from the index you see above.

Before ordering certificates online, you will need to type in your email address and provide a password to log in to the site.

The GRO link to log onto the site can be found at: https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

The cost of a certificate by ordering online is £7.00.

I next found James and Susannah “Gabberdey” in the 1871 census living in an address of 15 York Street East, Stepney, London. James is shown to be a 33 year old ship carpenter born St. George in the East, London. Susannah is 25 years old and also born in St. George in the East. A transcription of the 1871 census from Ancestry.com follows.

In your message to Ancestry.com you had noted that Lavinia was the first born child of James and Susannah Gabbedey. However, I found that they had a child before Lavinia. This is Alice. I located her baptism record at Ancestry.com which shows that she was baptized in the Saint Anne Limehouse Church of England of February 13, 1873, and that she was born on September 8, 1871. She was born just five months after the 1871 census was taken on April 2nd. The record also shows that at the time of her baptism, Alice and her parents were living in 9 Frederick Street. James’s occupation is shipwright. Samuel Charlesworth performed the baptism ceremony:

I also located what I believe to be the GRO birth index for Alice. Parents’ names aren’t listed in GRO birth indexes for this time period. The index shows that the birth of Alice Matilda “Gabberdy” was recorded in the Stepney district for the December quarter of 1871. Her birth record can be found in Volume 1c, Page 438 of the GRO registers:

In your message about the Gabbedey family you had written that James and Susannah had a daughter named Alice, born in 1888. This could only mean that the first born Alice had died as an infant or young child. With this in mind I looked for Alice Matilda’s GRO death index and found it. The index shows her death recorded in the Stepney district for the march quarter of 1873. She was 1 year old as of her last birthday at the time of her death. Her death record can be found in Volume 1c, Page 342 of the GRO registers. Her death record should tell the cause of her death and where she was living at the time she died. Her death record will also give you the name of the informant, that is, the person who reported her death to the local registrar:

Next I found James and Susan Gabbedey and four of their children in the 1881 census living in an address of 123 Bromley Street, London. James is 44 years old and working as a shipwright. His place of birth is given as Shadwell, Middlesex. Susan is 36 years old and shown to have been born in Wapping. Her occupation is mantel maker. The children in the household are 7 year old “Levena,” born Limehouse; 5 year old Matilda, also born Limehouse; 2 year old Louisa and 2 month old Florence, both born in Ratcliffe, Middlesex. The 1881 census trabnscription below is from the Latter Day Saints (LDS) website at www.familysearch.org:

I also found the baptism record for Lavinia’s out of wedlock child, Louisa Ethel Gabbedey. She was baptized on September 6, 1893, in the Christ Church, Church of England, Manchester Road.. Her mother however, is listed as Susannah Gabbedey, living in 149 Stebondale St. The clergyman who performed the baptism was FS Robinson:

Also Karina, I found a very interesting GRO death index which may pertain to the Alice Gabbedey born in 1888. This index shows that Alice’s death was recorded in the Surrey Mid Eastern Registration District in 1843. Her age at death is listed as 55. At 55 years old in 1943, Alice would have been born in 1888. Her death record can be found in Volume 2a, Page 452 of the GRO registers. The index below is from Ancestry.com, not the FreeBMD website:

I next wanted to see if I could find more information about James Gabbedey before his marriage to Susannah Sargeant. The 1871 census shows that James was 33 years old, which places his year of birth circa 1837-1838. His marriage record shows that his father was Henry. With this information I looked for James in the 1841 census and believe I found 4 year old James living with his parents and siblings in an address of Charles Square, Tower Hamlets, London. His father Henry is listed as a 35 year old labourer born in the county, that is, Middlesex. His mother is 33 year old Elizabeth, also born in Middlesex. His siblings, all listed as being born in Middlesex, include 6 year old Henry; 5 year old John; 10 year old Eliza; and 2 year old Louisa Ann. James is also listed as being born in Middlesex, The 1841 census transcription follows:

I didn’t find a baptism record for James Gabbedey but located what may be his GRO birth index. The index shows that James’s birth was recorded in the St. George in the East Registration District for the September quarter of 1837. His birth record can be found in Volume 2, Page 62 of the GRO registers, The birth record will tell you if his parents are Henry Gabbedey and Elizabeth. I‘ll have more on Elizabeth‘s surname a little later.

I also found a GRO birth index for a Louisa Ann Gabbedey. She too could be the child of James and Susannah. The index shows Louisa’s birth recorded in the St. George in the East Registration District for the December quarter of 1839, and can be found in Volume 2, Page 77 of the GRO registers:

I then wanted to see if I could locate the marriage record for Henry Gabbedey and Elizabeth. I found a marriage record at Ancestry.com which I believe pertains to them. This record shows that Henry Gabbedey, a bachelor, and Elizabeth Louisa Sheldrick, a widow, were married in the St. Botolph Church of England, Bishopsgate, on September 17, 1833. I couldn’t make out the full name of the Curate who married them, but his middle name is Knox and surname Child. The witnesses to the marriage were John James Cosson and Eliza Osborn:

This marriage record made me question what Elizabeth’s maiden name was, as she is listed as a widow. I looked for the marriage record of a fellow named Sheldrick and an Elizabeth Louisa, and found a record which shows that a Thomas Sheldrick and Elizabeth Louisa Osborn were married in the Parish of St. Botolph, Bishopsgate on October 10, 1830. If you go back to the marriage record for Henry and Elizabeth, you’ll see that one of the witnesses is Eliza Osborn. This could Elizabeth’s mother, sister, or cousin.

The marriage record between Thomas Sheldrick and Elizabeth Louisa Osborn follows:

Next I looked for a burial record for Thomas Sheldrick. I figured that for Elizabeth Louisa to have married again three years after her first marriage, Thomas must have died between 1830 and 1832. I found a burial record which may pertain to Thomas. This record shows that a Thomas Sheldrick was buried for the St. John the Evangelist Westminster Church of England on July 5, 1832. He was buried from the “penitentiary.” His age at death was 43 years. This record makes you wonder if he had worked at the penitentiary or had been an inmate there. I can‘t be sure however, if this record pertains to the husband of Elizabeth Louisa:

Next I located Henry and “Louisa” Gabbedey and eight of their children living in an address of 4 Sarah Street, St. Paul Shadwell, London. Also in the household is 20 year old Eliza Sheldrick, born Mile End, who is listed as Henry’s daughter-in-law. This implies that Eliza would be Elizabeth Louisa’s daughter, but I didn’t find a baptism record for an Eliza whose parents were Thomas and Elizabeth Louisa Sheldrick. More on Eliza Sheldrick a little later. The 1851 census shows that 44 year old Henry Gabbedey is a general labourer born in Poplar. His 43 year old wife Louisa was born in Hitchen, Herts, that is, Hertfordshire. In the 1841 census Elizabeth Louisa was shown to have been born in Middlesex. The seven Gabbedey children, ranging in age from 17 down to 10 month, are all shown to have been born in St. George in the East. Also in the household is a lodger, 21 year old blacksmith John Channing, born Newington, Surrey:

To digress from the Gabbedey genealogy for a moment, I found the marriage record Eliza Sheldrick, showing that she and William Henry Gillman were married in Saint Paul’s Church of England, Shadwell, on October 31, 1853. Eliza’s address at the time she married is listed as 4 Sarah Street, New Gravel Lane. 4 Sarah Street is the address of the Gabbedey residence in the 1851 census. The marriage record also shows that Eliza’s was 22 years old when she married and that her father was Thomas Sheldrick, a blacksmith. A transcription of the marriage record follows:

Concerning the Gabbedey children found in the 1851 census, I located the GRO birth indexes for several of them. The index for Charles “Gabberty” shows his birth recorded in the St. George in the East district for the March quarter of 1842. His birth record can be found in Volume 2, Page 89 of the GRO registers:

Next is the index for Matilda Gabbedey. Her birth was recorded in the St. George in the East district for the September quarter of 1845. But a note accompanying the index states that page number 800 within Volume 2, is probably incorrect:

The page number is not within the range expected for the district. Note that there a number of possible reasons for this,
including an error in the district, the page, the volume, the date or the type of entry.

I didn’t find a GRO birth index for Joseph Gabbedey at the FreeBMD website, but did locate his birth index at the Tower Hamlets BMD website. See the link below for the index and ordering procedures:

http://www.thbmd.co.uk/ordering.php?type=births&ref=S%26...

Next I found the GRO birth as well as death indexes for George “Gabday,” and George Gabbedey. These records, I believe, pertain to the same 10 month old George Gabbedey found in the 1851 census noted earlier. The index for George Gabday shows his birth recorded in the Stepney district for the June quarter of 1850. His birth record can be found in Volume 2, but the person who transcribed the record for FreeBMD was unclear as to the page number within volume 2 where the birth rercord can be found:

Next is the death index for George Gabbedey. His death was recorded in the Stepney district for the June quarter of 1851, and can be found in Volume 2, Page 381 of the GRO registers. George would have died soon after he was enumerated in the 1851 census:

I then searched for and located Henry and Louisa Gabbedey in the 1861 census. The Ancestry.com index for this record spells the name “Golliday,” making this entry a challenge to locate. The census shows that Henry and Louisa and five of their children were living in an address of 10 King Street, St George in The East. In this enumeration, Louisa is shown to have been born in Rotherhithe, Surrey, rather than in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, as noted in the 1851 census:

The 1871 census shows that Henry “Gabbedy,” is living in the household of his son-in-law and daughter, George and Matilda Bright in an address of 7 Northey Street, St. Anne Limehouse. Henry is not listed as a family member but as a 63 year old “boarder,” and labourer, born In Poplar. He is also listed as a widower.

George Bright is a 28 year old ship’s caulker born Limehouse. His 25 year old wife Matilda was born in St. George’s in the East. The children in the household include 5 year old George T. Bright, born St. George’s in the East; William J. Bright, 5 years old, also born St. George’s in the East; and 8 month old John H. Bright, born Limehouse:

Also living in 7 Northey Street, but in a separate household, is 31 year old Phoebe S. Gabbedy, born Stepney. The entry for her shows that her husband is a mariner. He may have been at sea when the 1871 census was enumerated, as he is not in the household with her. I’m not sure what her and her husbands relation to Henry Gabbedey would be:

Below is what I believe to be the GRO death index for Henry Gabbedey’s wife, Elizabeth Louisa Gabbedey. Her death was recorded in the Stepney district for the March quarter of 1868, and can be found in Volume 1c, Page 342 of the GRO registers. I then went back in time in the records to see I could locate a baptism index at the LDS website for Henry Gabbedey, born circa 1808 in Polar. I didn’t find an index for him, but I did locate LDS baptism indexes for an Elizabeth Louisa Osborn, and an Elizabeth Osborn registered in the St. Mary Rotherhithe Church of England, Surrey. The parents of both children are listed as James Osborn and Ann. It is a guess that the first baptized daughter, Elizabeth Louisa had died young and that her parents named a later child after her.

The 1861 census shows that 51 year old Louisa Gabbedey was born in Rotherhithe. Her age of 55 in 1861 places her year of birth circa 1806. Earlier census returns however, place her year of birth circa 1808. The baptism of Elizabeth Louisa Osborn took place on April 24, 1808 in St. Mary‘s. Her age at the time she was baptized is listed as 1 year old. The index follows:

Keep in mind that it is only guess work on my part that the 1810 baptism of Elizabeth Osborn is the future wife of Henry Gabbedey.

Next I located a ship’s passenger list at Ancestry.com for a John “Gabbedy,” showing that he arrived Sydney, NSW on board the Rangatira on October 3, 1871. His port of departure was Kings George Sorent, Adelaide, Melbourne. I am wondering if this John could be in your Gabbedey genealogy:

THE FAMILY OF SUSANNAH SARGEANT

I began the search for Susannah Sargeant with the 1851 census, as I knew this would be the first census where she could be found, based on her age from census returns seen earlier in this reply. I also knew from her marriage record that her father’s name was Henry and that Henry’s occupation was a Spanish interpreter. I found 6 year old Susannah, or “Susan,” as she is named, in the 1851 census living in the household of her parents, 54 year old Henry and 43 year old Besheba Sargeant, residing in an address of 120 Pennington Street, St. George in the East. London. Susan is shown to be 6 years old and born in St. George in the East. Her father Henry’s occupation is Linguist. He was born in St. Katherines, Middlesex. Susan’s mother Besheba was born in St. George in the East. The other children in the household, all born St. George in the East, include 25 year old mariner Henry; 14 year old plumber William; 12 year old Thomas; 10 year old Charlotte; 8 year old George; 4 year old Sarah; and 3 month old Ann Sargeant:

JAMES RACINE

Next I wanted to see if I could locate more information about James Racine before his marriage to Lavinia Ann Gabbedey in 1897. I found the person I believe to be your James Racine in the 1891 census, showing that he was a private in the army infantry’s “The Battalion the Cameromans Scottish Rifles,” stationed in Aldershot, Hampshire. He is listed as being 19 years old and born in Bethnal Green:

In the 1881 census 9 year old James Racine is living in the household of his grandfather and grandmother, 67 year old Joseph and 50 year old Elizabeth Racine in an address of 12 Wimbolt South Side Street. Also in the household is Joseph and Elizabeth’s son, 31 year old James Racine, working as a general shopman. I believe this James is the younger James’s father. Following James Sr. in the census is 24 year old Margaret. At this point in the research I couldn’t tell if Margaret was James’s wife or Joseph and Elizabeth’s daughter, as Margaret’s marital status is not provided in the census. In addition there are several other of Joseph and Elizabeth’s children in the household, along with a lodger named Albert Handscombe:

I also found the Racine family in the 1871 census, but Joseph and Elizabeth’s son James is not in the household in Wimbolt Street. But, the youngest resident of the household is called “Infant Racine,” who was 1 day old when the census was taken. I believe this infant to be James Racine, Jr., as his gender is listed as male:

Below is the GRO birth index for James Joseph Racine. His birth was registered in the Bethnal Green district for the June quarter of 1871. The June quarter includes the months of April, May, and June. The 1871 census was enumerated on April 2 of that year. At one day old when the census was taken, James would have been born April 1, 1871. His birth record can be found in Volume 1c, Page 201 of the GRO registers. His birth certificate should provide the names of his parents:

I also found a GRO marriage index for a James Racine. But, there are two other people listed in the index. These are Thomas Rookley and Anne Sargeant. GRO marriage records do not list people by marriage partner, but alphabetically by last name. You can’t tell from the index if James Racine had married Anne Sargent, or if Thomas Rookley had married her. You would have to order James’s marriage record to learn about the person he married. I didn’t find a church marriage record for him, or an index of his marriage at the Tower Hamlet site. The marriage was recorded in the Stepney district for the December quarter of 1870 and can be found in Volume 1c, Page 1044 of the GRO registers.

To move forward in time in the records, I located the church marriage of James Racine. This would be his second marriage. The record shows that he married Eliza Gale in the St. Bartholomew Church of England, Bethnal Green, on August 1, 1885. The record shows that he was a widower when he married. His age at the time of marriage is 35. When he married he was living in 27 Weymoutte Terrace. His occupation was salesman. His father is listed as Joseph Racine, a silk dyer.

Eliza Gale at the time of marriage was a 27 year old spinster living in 7 Grandby Street. Her father is listed as John Gale, a silk weaver. The curate who married James and Eliza was A. McKechnie. The witnesses to the marriage were
John Gale and Emma Elliston:

Below is the church marriage record for Joseph Racine and Elizabeth Chinnery. I believe these are the parents of James and the grandparents of your James. Their marriage took place in the St. Philip’s Church, Bethnal Green, on July 3, 1847. Joseph’s occupation is listed as “Gentleman.“ At the time of his marriage Joseph was of full age and living in St. John Street. His father is listed as James Racine, a silk dyer. Elizabeth Chinnery’s age at the time of marriage is 17. She was living in Patience Street. Her father is listed as Charles Chinnery, a fishmonger. This marriage didn’t take place by banns, but by license, probably because Elizabeth was a minor when she married:

I also located the GRO marriage index for Joseph Racine and Elizabeth Chinnery. The marriage was recorded in the Bethnal Green district for the September quarter of 1847, and can be found in Volume 2, Page 37 of the GRO registers. Several other individuals are also listed in the index, some twice due to variant transcription spellings of their surnames:

Next I looked for records concerning Joseph Racine before his marriage to Elizabeth Chinnery. I believe I found 25 year old Joseph in the 1841 census living in the household of his father, 50 year old James Racine, whose occupation was silk dyer. The address of the family was South Conduit Street, Bethnal Green. James is shown to be a silk dyer born in the county, that is, Middlesex. No occupation is listed for Joseph, who was also born in the county. The other children in the household, all born in Middlesex, include 20 year old Catherine; 20 year old Ann; and 15 year old Henry Racine:

Next I looked for Joseph Racine’s baptism record and found it. He was baptized in St. Matthew’s Church of England, Bethnal Green, on September 29, 1813. His date of birth was September 3, 1813. His parents are listed as James and Catherine Racine. James’s occupation is Silk Dyer. W. Clarke performed the baptism ceremony:

I also located the church marriage record of Joseph’s parents. James Racine Jr. and Catherine Boullen were married in St. Matthew’s on May 4, 1811. Catherine is listed as a minor. The rector of the church, Joshua King, married James and Catherine. The witnesses to the marriage were T. Boullen, R. Racine, and Ann Boullen:

Next I wanted to see if more information could be found concerning Joseph Racine’s wife, Elizabeth Chinnery. Her 1837 marriage record shows that her father was Charles Chinnery, a fishmonger. Elizabeth’s age when she married in 1847 is 17, placing her year of birth circa 1829-1830. I found 11 year old Elizabeth in the 1841 census residing with her parents, 40 year old Charles and 35 year old Ann, in an address of Patience Street, Bethnal Green. Elizabeth’s marriage record had shown that at the time she married, she was living in Patience Street. The 1841 census shows her father was a porter, rather than a fishmonger. He was born in Middlesex, as was his 35 year old wife Ann. The other children in the household, all born in Middlesex, are 15 year old Ann; 13 year old Charles; 10 year old Susan; 7 year old Louisa; and 1 year old Josiah:

The following is the baptism record for Elizabeth Chinnery. She was baptized in the St. Leonard Church of England, High Street, Shoreditch, on May 17, 1830. The record shows she was born on April 26, 1830. Her parents are listed as Charles and Ann Chinnery. Charles’s occupation is porter. At the time of the baptism the Chinnery family were living in 3 Colt Court. The name of the clergyman who baptized Elizabeth appears to be W. Kelly, but I could be wrong about his name:

Karina, before ordering records from the GRO and Tower Hamlets BMD, and before ordering microfilms from the Family History Center, I recommend that you access the same indexes as I did from these websites, to see if you agree that these records pertain to your Gabbedey and related ancestral lines. As noted at the beginning of this reply, I am not a descendant of the Gabbedeys and have not been researching this line, which means you would be the best judge in determining whether or not the records I found pertain to your ancestors.

If you plan of a great deal of research in British records, I also recommend that you obtain a subscription to Ancestry.com, which not only has census records, but other records you can research, such as birth and baptism records, marriage records, burial records, will and probate records, emigration and immigration records, military records, and more.

Please wish your grandmother a Happy 100th Birthday.

Best Wishes,

Dave Boylan
