Hello Sledmonds,

I located a Canadian passenger list index which may refer to your Charles Frederick Winter. The index was found at the Ancestry.com website, and shows a Charles F. Winter arriving in Halifax Nova Scotia on board the ship Siberian on May 12, 1908. His age at the time of arrival is listed as 18. The ports of departure for the ship were Glasgow, Scotland and Liverpool, England. Charles’s occupation is listed as railroad labourer, and his ultimate destination is Toronto. The original passenger list is held by the Library and Archives of Canada. Please see below:

I also located yet a another passenger list , which shows a Charles Fredk Winter arriving in New York City on board the Oceanic, on February 22, 1911. He left out of Southampton, England on February 15, 1911. His age is given as 22 years old. A note accompanying the record for Charles states that his nearest relative is his mother, Mrs. Winter, of 55 Edmonton Road, Edmonton. I thought at first this may refer to Edmonton, Ontario, but it may actually refer to Edmonton, London. Charles’s final destination is listed as Toronto, Ontario

The record was found at Ancestry.com’s New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957. The transcription follows:

I also located a Canadian Passenger List record for a Charles Fredk Winter at Ancestry.com, noting that he arrived in Ottawa, Canada on February 23, 1911, on board the ship United States. This date would be the day after his arrival in New York. His age is listed as 22. His port of departure in this record is listed as Copenhagen, Denmark.

The record is confusing, as it asks Charles if he had ever been to Canada before. He answers “No,” but in the column which asks how long he had been in Canada before, he answers that he was in Toronto 3 ½ years. He also states that he intends to reside in Canada permanently.

The source information notes this record comes from the Library and Archives Canada. Passenger Lists, 1865-1935. Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The transcription follows:

I notice from previous submissions of yours to the Ancestry.com message boards that you already have the 1916 marriage record for Charles Frederick Winter and Olive May Hudson, daughter of Robert Edmund Hudson and Harriet Raggett. This record can be found at Ancestry.com in the Toronto collection. The marriage record shows that Olive May Hudson was 20 years old in 1916 and born in London, England. At 20 years of age in 1916, Olive would have been born circa 1895-1896. I looked for her baptism record in London at the Ancestry.com website for the years 1895-1896, but didn’t find it, nor did I locate a GRO birth index for an Olive Hudson or Olive May Hudson registered anywhere in London, Middlesex, Kent, or Surrey between the years 1894 and 1898.

I’ll have more information about Olive Hudson Winter a little later.

Next I found what may be the naturalization record index for your Charles Frederick Winter. The index comes from the Ancestry.com subscription website. The original record is held by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). Please see below:

THE WINTER SURNAME IN ENGLAND

I uncovered the baptism record for Charles Frederick Winter at the Ancestry.com’s “London, England, Births and Baptisms, 1813-1906.” The original London baptisms are held by the London Metropolitan Archives or Guildhall Library Manuscripts, London.

The record shows that Charles was baptized in the Saint Mary Magdalen Church of England on 16 September 1888. His parents are listed as Alfred James and Charlotte Esther Winter, living in an address of 58 Spa Road. Alfred’s occupation is Leather Dresser. The name of the clergyman who baptized Charles appears to be J.C. Vawdrey, though I may not have the last name correct as some of the writing in these old records is difficult to read.

A transcription of the baptism record follows:

The following is a General Register Office (GRO) birth index for a Charles Frederick Winter. I believe this index pertains to the son of Alfred and Charlotte Winter. GRO indexes for this time period don’t include the name of either parent. GRO birth, marriage, and death indexes for England and Wales beginning in 1837, can be accessed from the FreeBMD website at: http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/

The index shows Charles’s birth recorded in the St. Olave Southwark Registration District for the December quarter of 1888. The December quarter includes the months of October, November, and December:

Before moving on to the 1891 census for the family of Alfred and Charlotte Winter, I wanted to see if I could learn more information about Alfred and Charlotte in the 1881 census enumerations. I believe I found Alfred in the 1881 census living in the household of his mother, 46 year old widow Julia Winter, whose occupation is “Mangling.” Julia’s birthplace is listed as Newington Surrey. Alfred is shown to be a 20 year old Lime Jobber, born Bernondsey, though in the transcription below from the Latter Day Saints (LDS) website, his place of birth is spelled “Bermondey.” Aside from Alfred there are seven other of Julia’s children in the household, which was located in 5 Parker’s Buildings, Bermondsey:

After locating the Winter family in the 1861 census, I next looked for the baptism of Julia Louisa. I found her baptism record which shows her baptism took place in the Christ Church Bermondsey on October 14, 1855. Her date of birth is listed as September 20th 1855. At the time of her baptism the family were living in 66 Great George Street. The clergyman who baptized Julia was Alfred Frunell:

At this point in the research I wanted to see if I could locate the Church marriage record and the GRO marriage index for William John Winter and Julia Brisley… I found the church marriage record showing that John and Julia brisley Parson were married in the St. George Camberwell Church of England on July 16, 1854. At the time of marriage John was of full age and working as a leather finisher. His address at the time of marriage was Albany Road. His father’s name is John William Winter, whose occupation is dentist.

Julia Brisley Parson, at the time she married, was of full age and living in Coburg Road. Her father’s name is John Parson, a plumber. I couldn’t make out the full name of the minister who married William and Julia, but his last name appears to be Collins. The witnesses to the marriage appear to be I.C. Parson and A.V. Parson, but I could have misread the initials of their first and middle names. The marriage transcription follows:

Next are the combination birth and baptisms for John Parson, Walter Thomas, Frederick, and Charles Edward Winter. All were baptized in the St Mary Magdalen Bermondsey Church of England, on September 29, 1869. At the time that John, Walter, and Frederick were baptized, the Winter family were living in 1 Turner’s Retreat. Charles Edward, you’ll notice, wasn’t baptized until 1872, though he is in the 1871 census. His birth date is not given in the baptism record. When he was baptized his family was living in an address of 4 Alscot Road. All the children were baptized by R.S. Keitch:

JOHN WILLIAM WINTER

Next I wanted to see if more information could be found concerning John William Winter. I located a combination baptism/birth record for a John William Winter which may pertain to your ancestor, though I can’t be sure of that. This record shows a John William Winter, son of John and Ann Winter, baptized in Saint Saviour’s Church of England, Southwark, on October 19, 1828. His date of birth was August 4, 1828. At the time of his baptism his family were living in an address of St. Alban’s. His father’s occupation is listed as hairdresser. In the 1854 marriage record for John William Winter and Julia Brisley Parson, John’s father’s occupation was dentist. In 19th century England, hairdressers, or barbers, as we call them now, also acted as dentists.

The clergyman who baptized John William was D. Harrison. Again, I‘m not positive the record below is for your John William Winter:

Next I located Julia “Parsons” in the 1841 census living with her parents and siblings in an address of Alfred Place, St. Mary Newington, London. Julia is shown to be 7 years old and born in the county, that is, Surrey. Her father John is a 35 year old plumber who was not born in Surrey. Neither was her 40 year old mother Sarah. Julia’s siblings, all born in Surrey, are 15 year old Elizabeth, 13 year old Harriet, 11 year old Emma, 9 year old Ann, and 5 year old Selenia. Also in the household is 68 year old Ann Parsons, who was not born in Surrey. Ann may have been John’s mother. The household also includes a 40 year old tailoress named Mary Spencer:

CHARLOTTE ESTHER EDMONDS

Earlier, it was shown that Alfred James Winter and Charlotte Esther Edmonds were married in the St. Mark Old Street Church of England on Christmas Day, 1883. In the marriage record Charlotte’s father is listed as William Edmonds who was employed as a hawker. I looked for more information about Charlotte Esther Edmonds and found that she was baptized in the St. Matthias, Bethnal Green Church of England on August 26, 1860. She was born on August 4. Her parents are William and Esther Edmonds. I could not make out the street they were living in at the time of the baptism, but the house number is 44. The record shows that William’s occupation was “Hawker.” The priest who baptized Charlotte was W.H. Chambers:

I then looked for Olive Hudson in the 1911 and 1901 census enumerations, and found only one Olive Hudson in each enumeration whose parents were Robert and Harriet. The 1911 census shows that Olive is 15 years old and living with her parents in an address of 4 Whitefriars Road, Hastings, Sussex. Her place of birth is given as St. Leonards, Sussex, which may refer to a parish in Hastings. Olive’s father Robert is listed as a 39 year old harness maker born in Croydon, Surrey. He is shown to have been married 18 years to 39 year old Harriet, who was born in Fernhurst, Sussex. Also in the household is 12 year old Cecil Hudson, born Hastings. The 1911 census comes from the 1911census.co.uk website at: http://www.1911census.co.uk/default.aspx

Going back ten years in time the 1901 census shows that 28 year old Robert Hudson, his 29 year old wife Harriet, and their two children, 5 year old Olive and 2 year old Cecil were living in Hastings, Sussex, England.

I couldn’t make out the full street address where the Hudson family were living, but it reads in part, No. 13 Bray Terrace. Nor could I decipher Robert’s occupation or town or parish of birth in Surrey, as the enumerator’s handwriting is difficult to read. Harriet Hudson appears to have been born in Fernhurst, Sussex. Olive and Cecil were born in Hastings. The 1901 census follows:

I can’t be one-hundred percent sure if the above 1911 and 1901 census enumerations pertain to your Olive Hudson and her family, but these enumerations prompted me to search the GRO indexes to see if an Olive Hudson’s birth was recorded in in Hastings for the years 1895-1896. I located one index showing the birth of Olive Harriet Hudson recorded in the Hastings Registration District for the September quarter of 1895. Her birth record can be found in Volume 2b, Page 28 of the GRO registers. If you order this record from the GRO see if her parents are Robert Edmund Hudson and Harriet Raggett:

The Croydon Registration District recorded births, marriages, and deaths for portions of Greater London, Kent and Surrey. See the following for more information: http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/croydon.html

I found an 18 year old Robert E. Hudson in the 1891 census living with his parents and two brothers in an address of 55 The Drive, Thornton Heath, Croydon, Sussex. Robert is shown to be a harness maker born in Deptford, Kent, rather than Croydon, Surrey. But, his occupation of harness maker in the 1891 census, is the same occupation he holds as found in the 1911 census noted earlier. Robert’s father in the 1891 census is 61 year old employed carpenter, Joseph Hudson, from Marsh, Cambridge. Joseph’s wife is 59 year old Eliza E. Hudson, also born Marsh. Robert’s brothers are 20 year old painter Charles Hudson, born Deptford, and 30 year old Joseph C. Hudson, born Tottenham, Middlesex:

Searching the 1881 census, I found the person who may be your Robert Edmund Hudson, but in this enumeration he is listed as 11 year old Edmund R. Hudson, son of Joseph and Eliza E. Hudson. The family is living in an address of 5 Alexandra Terrace, Croydon, Surrey. Edmund R. Hudson’s birthplace is given as Deptford, Kent, as it is in the 1891 census, rather than Croydon, Surrey. His father John is a 51 year old carpenter born in March, Cambridge. Eliza E. Hudson is 49 years old and also born in March, Cambridge. The other children in the household are 22 year old painter, William H. Hudson, born St. Pancras, Middlesex; 20 year old Charles, also a painter, born Tottenham; and 3 year old Joseph C. Hudson, born Croydon, Surrey. In the 1891 census Joseph C, Hudson is listed as 30 years old, Charles is 20, the same age as in the 1881 census, and Robert E., 18 years old, which shows that you can’t always trust the ages (or even names and places of birth) of residents in a household from one census year to another. In the 1871 census the elder Joseph Hudson is shown to be a 41 year old carpenter born March, Cambridgeshire. His wife is named Emma, 39 years old, also born in March. This indicates that Eliza Hudson’s middle name is Emma. The oldest child in the household is 16 year old domestic servant, Alice, born Islington, Middlesex. Next in age is 13 year old William, born St. Pancras, Middlesex. The youngest child in the household is 1 year old Charles Hudson, born Deptford, Kent. Next, I found a marriage record for Joseph Hudson and Eliza Emma Cousins. These may be Robert Edmund Hudson’s parents, and Olive‘s paternal grandparents. The marriage took place in Saint Mary’s Church of England, Islington, on December 18, 1852. At the time of the marriage Joseph was a bachelor of full age, working as a joiner, and living in an address of 19 Trimaton Place, Kings Cross. His father is listed as Joseph Hudson, also a joiner. Eliza is of full age and at the time of marriage was living in 5 Mexican Terrace. Her father’s name is Thomas Cousins, also working as a joiner. The clergyman who married Joseph and Eliza was William Dix. The witnesses to the marriage were J Andley and L. Brown

I then located Joseph Hudson in the 1851 census living in the household of his cousin, William Pope and William‘s wife Mary Jane, in an address of St. Stephen’s Terrace, Finsbury, Islington, London. Joseph is shown to be a 21 year old carpenter born in March, Cambridgeshire. William Pope is a 29 year old carpenter, also from March, as is 21 year old Mary Jane:

By searching the London marriages and banns at Ancestry.com I then discovered that William Pope and Mary Jane Cousins were married in the Saint Pancras Church of England on September 1, 1849. William Pope, of full age was living in an address of Church Row. His occupation is Joiner. His father’s name was Joseph Pope, who was “Dead.”

Mary Jane Cousins, also of full age, was living in Huntley Street at the time of marriage. Her father, also listed as “Dead,” was William Cousins. The clergyman who married the couple was F. Stainforth, whose middle initial I couldn’t decipher in a copy of the original marriage record. The witnesses to the marriage were William Cousins and Emma Cousins. Emma signed the marriage register with an “X.“ Emma may be the Eliza Emma Cousins that Joseph Hudson would marry in 1852:

I looked for, but didn’t find Eliza Emma Cousins in the 1851 census. I next turned to the 1841 census to see if I could locate Joseph Hudson. I found one possibility, though I don’t know if this record refers to your Joseph Hudson, as he is shown to be in the Wisbech Union Workhouse, Wisbech, Cambridgeshire. Towns or parishes of birth are not given in the 1841 census. The census only records whether a person was born in the county where the census was enumerated, or whether a person was born in Scotland or Ireland, or foreign parts.

In the 1841 census Joseph Hudson is shown to be 10 years old and born in Cambridgeshire:

You’ll notice that James and Hannah were married at least ten years before the 1861 baptism of their son George, which is an indication they may have had several children born before 1861. The LDS to date has not placed all of its records online, which may explain why there are no baptisms of Raggett children between 1851 and 1861.

Below is the GRO marriage index for Hannah Holmes and James Raggett. The marriage was recorded in the Midhurst district for the September quarter of 1851 and can be found in Volume 7, Page 607 of the GRO registers

James and Hannah Raggett would have been married too late to have been recorded as a couple in the 1851 census, But I believe I located them and three of their children in the 1861 census living in an address of Hatch Cottage, Fernhurst. In the 1861 enumeration their surname is spelled “Rigate,” rather than Raggett. I don’t know if this was a mistake on the part of the census official transcribing the surname improperly, or if the family had changed their name.

James is shown to be a 34 year old labourer born in Haslemere, Surrey. His wife Hannah is 29 years old and born in Farnhurst. The three children in the household, include 7 year old Robert, born Farnhurst; 5 year old Mary, born Haslemere; and 2 year old James, born Farnhurst:

Below is a GRO birth index for Robert Rigate. The birth was recorded in the Midhurst Registration District for the December quarter of 1853 and can be found in Volume 2b, Page 291 of the GRO registers:

The 1861 census shows that Mary Rigate was born in Haslemere, Surrey. The registration district for Haslemere was Hambleton, but I didn’t locate a GRO birth index for a Mary Rigate or Mary Raggett in the Hambleton district. It’s possible she was born in one district, but had her birth registered in another, or it’s possible I couldn’t identify Mary’s birth in the GRO registers.

But I did locate the GRO birth index for James Rigate. His birth was recorded in the Midhurst district for the December quarter of 1858 and can be found in Volume 2b, Page 303 of the GRO registers:

I then located the family of James and Hannah Rigate in the 1871 census. This census, like the 1861 enumeration, shows they were living in Hatch Cottage, Fernhurst. James is shown to be a 43 year old agricultural labourer born Haslemere, Surrey. His wife Hannah is 39 years old and born in Farnhurst, Sussex. The children in the household include 17 year old Robert, whose complete occupation I couldn’t make out because the census page is very faded, but he appears to have worked in the mines. His birthplace was Farnhurst. The next child is Mary Rigate, 15 years old, born Haslemere, followed by 12 year old agricultural labourer James, born Farnhurst. Also born in Farnhurst were 9 year old George; 7 year old Thomas; 4 year old Annie; and 2 year old Marie. If you go back to the LDS baptism indexes, you’ll note that James and Hannah Raggett had children with these, or variations of these names between 1861 and 1868. Harriet Raggett would not be in the 1871 census, as she was born until 1872:

Next I found James and Hannah Raggett in the 1881 census living in “Hatch Farm House,” Fernhurst, Sussex. James is a 52 year old Carter, born in Haslemere, Surrey. Hannah is 49 years old and born in Fernhurst. The three children in the household include17 year old Thomas, a gardener, born Fernhurst; 12 year old Elizabeth, born Fernhurst, and 9 year old Harriet, also born Fernhurst. Elizabeth is likely the child named Maria Elizabeth Raggett seen earlier in the baptism index from the LDS website. The 1881 census transcription below is from the LDS website:

I then uncovered James and Hannah Raggett in the 1891 census living in an address of Shalford, Fernhurst. None of their children are in the household with them. But, their 12 year old grandson, William Standing is in the household. William was born in Notting Hill, Middlesex. The census shows that James Raggett is a 63 year old retired carter born Haslemere. Hannah is shown to be 59 years old and born in Fernhurst:

After locating James and Hannah Raggett and their grandson William in the 1891 census, I wondered which daughter of James and Hannah had married a fellow whose surname was Standing. To find out, I accessed the GRO marriage indexes and found that Mary Ragget and Albert Standing were married in the September quarter of 1877. Their marriage was recorded in the Croydon district and can be found in Volume 2a, Page 366 of the GRO registers. In the index below you’ll note there are two different spellings for the name Raggett. This may be due to the FreeBMD transcriber not being able to discern the exact spelling in a copy of the marriage index.

The GRO index below which also includes the marriage of another couple:

Next I found the baptism/birth record for William Standing. He was baptized in the Saint Marylebone Church of England on November 2, 1879. He was born on September 28, 1879. At the time of his baptism he and his parents were living in 4 Cape of Good Hope Mews. His parents are Albert and Mary Standing. Albert’s occupation was coachman. The clergyman who baptized William was William Kelly:

Next I found William’s parents Albert and Mary Standing and four of their children living in an address of 1a Norland Stables, Kensington, London. Albert is shown to be a 39 year old coachman born West Grinstead, Sussex. His wife Mary is 34 years old and born in Haslemere, Surrey. The children in the household include 14 year old Albert, an errand boy, born Marylebone; Annie, 9 years old, born Kensington; 7 year old Mary and 2 year old Ada, both born Kensington:

I also found Harriet Raggett in the 1891 census, working as a domestic cook for the family of Lamley and Martha Marshall. The address of the Marshall household is 193 Selhurst, Croydon, Surrey. Harriet is shown to be 19 years old and born in Fernhurst, Sussex. Her employer, Lamley Marshall was employed in the civil service working for the GPO, which I take to stand for the “General Post Office.” The census transcription follows:

CONCLUSION

If you plan on a great deal of research in English, Canadian, and American records, I recommend a subscription to Ancestry.com. As you can see from the foregoing records, a great deal of information was found about your ancestors through Ancestry.com, especially in the London area church baptism/birth and marriage records.

In addition, a subscription to Ancestry will allow you to go over the records I found, especially census records, concerning the Winter, Edmonds, Raggett, and related families, and help you to confirm or refute that the information I found pertains to your ancestors.

Also, before ordering any GRO birth, marriage, or death records, or LDS microfilms noted above, access the same indexes that I did from the FreeBMD and LDS websites, to see if you agree these indexes pertain to your particular ancestors. I am not a descendant of the Winter or Edmonds and related families, and have not been researching these lines.

Best Wishes,

Dave Boylan
