Just a note about Wines family. Although I don't have any connection, I have been reading a couple of Somerset films recently, and I would advise anyone researching this name, to also take into account names transcribed as Vines, because the handwriting in the registers is easily mistaken V for W.
Yours in Genealogy,
Jan
in sunny QLD Australia

Sorry no one in Somerset but we are spread over quite a large area as a family. Unfortunately the ladies have all married and therefore changed their names. I live in Bishop's Waltham, just outside of Winchester. I have a distant cousin who is also involved in the history of the name. If you are interested let me know and I will persue it? Good luck in your search.
Regards, George Westcombe

Hi, Dorothy.
Thank you for this - more confirmation of the showman link but still no forename!!
One of James’ sons-in-law was John “Manchester Jack” Gill, reputed to be England’s first lion-tamer.
All the Bromsgroves, descended from John & Esther, that I can connect with, were baptised, married and buried at St Mary Magdalene. Another family, headed by Henry and Sarah, were Octagon Chapel Weslayans, but I cannot connect them to John & Esther.

In the parish registers, he is named John Manchester Gill.

“Manchester Jack of Wombwell’s Menagerie was the first lion tamer. In about 1835 he appeared before the public, sitting on the back of Nero, the lion, and opening Nero’s mouth.” (JL Middlemiss: Zoo on Wheels, 1987.) Poor old Nero was, by some accounts, rather elderly.

I have yet to find Gill or any of ‘my’ Bromsgroves in the 1841 census. I guess they were on the road. None of the inns associated with them later were in family hands at that time. In 1841 both of James’ brothers, John & William, were butchers in Taunton but none of James’ family were with them.

Mike
1896 Penge directories show Deputy Surgeon General Samuel Bowen Partridge at Thicket Lodge, 40 Thicket Road. The house, which was on the north corner of the junction with Anerley Park Road, has been demolished.

Coincidentally or not, of the half dozen other Partridges in the locality at the time, there is another Deputy Surgeon General, William Peyton Partridge, at Bella Vista, 10 Southend Road, Beckenham.

Hi, You may be able to get some information from the church where Mr Sewell was burued. Your Mr Bromsgrove may be interred there as well.

Found in a Google search:
In July 1829 Joseph Neal Sewell a blind giant from Lincolnshire was buried in St Mary Magdalen churchyard. During his life Sewell had made a living by being exhibited in public, at exhibitions and touring shows, but lately had made friends with a Taunton man called Mr Bromsgrove. He was reputedly staying with another friend, Mr Luxton, when he died and in accordance with his wishes he was buried in the local churchyard. Many people visited the huge and hence unusual grave on the North side of the tower.

Good luck in your search.
Dorothy Nagy

Hi Celia,
Thank you very much for going the extra mile for me. I sometimes do the same thing when a person or family captures my attention. Since discovering this family about a week ago, I've made contact with a descendant on Genes Reunited who is my 3rd cousin once removed. His mother has done an extensive research on the family. Another Partridge and GR member who is descended from a branch which wasn't in India asked me if I knew anything about them. Now, thanks to you, I can tell him a bit and steer him towards the obit link you provided. Thanks again for finding the time to help. You're a dear! Kind regards, Dave

Do you know about all the Indian links? In case not, as it is such an interesting family, I couldn't resist delving a bit further ...

The 1901 census (when Douglas, his brother Noel and mother Elizabeth were boarders at a house in Lordship Lane, Dulwich Common) also gives his birthplace as Gorakhpur, India. His father Godfrey was presumably still out in India then, as a directory lists G B Partridge as a resident of Gorakhpur and "persnl. asst. to agent and chf. engr., T. S. ry." in 1895.

The 1881 census has Godfrey as a student at the Crystal Place School of Engineering and living with his family in Penge. His father (Douglas's grandfather) was Samuel Bowen Partridge, retired Dep Surgeon General Bengal Army.

There is an obituary of Samuel Bowen PARTRIDGE here:
http://www.bmj.com/cgi/pdf_extract/1/1950/1296
and there must be a lot more information about the family elsewhere.

I'm looking for information on the Montague or Montacute family from Montacute village in Somerset - England.
My Great-Grandmother was Lottie Alberta Montacute/Montague (b. 1883). She married Charles William Benjamin Ham in Lambeth/ London in 1902. She had four sisters and a brother - Maud Evelin (b. 1883), Flossie (b. 1885), Gladys Marjorie (b. 1890), Francis Leslie (b. 1894) and Gertrude Amy (b. 1896). Their parents where Francis Montacute/Montague (1859-1902) and Mary Sarah Wilson (b. 1856).
The family moved up to Lambeth/ London between 1891 and 1894.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

In his excellent “Book of Taunton” (1977), Robin Bush says, “At the Harp Inn, South Road, circus animals were given a home after their travelling days were over. The landlord, Bromsgrove, had been attendant [±1826-9] to the blind giant, Joseph Sewell, buried here [Taunton] in 1829.” (My additions in square brackets.)

Unfortunately, he gives neither Bromsgrove’s forename, nor the source of this information.

I think the Harp Inn was possibly also known as the Half Way House Inn and South Road became Shoreditch Road (not South Street).

I believe the Bromsgrove referred to was my gx3-grandfather, James (1799-1852), but it could have been a brother, or their father, James (dates unknown).

Can anyone help me confirm/expand this tale?
I have yet to cross-reference the work which I always recommend (including my own work) just to get a second source.

I am descended through their son Charles and from him Francis, who was one of the siblings that migrated to South Wales.

You can email me directly on my email address kerry at myforefathers dot co dot uk.
I spell it out to help slow down mail robots picking up my address.

Kerry

This is my first posting to this list as I have just started researching my 5th Great Grandparents, William Hatch (b abt 1750 Somerset) & Jane Tucker (b abt 1751 Somerset).

As far as I know they had 2 sons. William (b 18 November 1775 Somerset) & Richard (b abt 1777 and christened in Badgworth on 8 September 1777).

William Jnr moved to Whitburn, Co Durham and married Jane Nicholson in Bishopwearmouth on 12 June 1798. Information contained in the parish records for their children's christenings states that William came from Stone Allerton, Somerset.

I have no further information on Richard.

I'd really like to make contact with anyone else researching this family.

Douglas Brown,
Queanbeyan, Australia

Crocker/Damon of Yeovil... Mary Damon appears to be the eldest sister of my ggggrandfather Timothy Deamon, named after his father. This family with several surname spellings lived in Barwick a hamlet a couple of kms. south of Yeovil cc 1750-1800. They then moved to Yeovil. Mary's baptism 1766 entry can be found @ FreeReg Search for Barwick. The children's parents were shown variously as Timothy and Elizabeth (Betty) Damon,Deman,Deamon and Dinan. I only know the history of my ggggfather, born in 1775. Served in the Royal Artillery 1794-1814 and died in Yeovil in 1859. I hope this helps you rocket and thanks for details about my ggggaunt!

And the winner is ... neither!

Based on Arthur Sidney Parfitt's birth certificate, his (and May's) father is John Parfitt, not Richmond Oliver Parfitt, The mother is Emily Southway (deceased.) Richmond has a brother John.

So, I assume that Arthur and May stayed with their grandparents, while their father John, mourned his wife. Coincidence, or perhaps mourning the death of his own wife, brought their Uncle Richmond to be at the same place at that time.

Thanks again to everyone for their help.

Kind regards, Grant

From 1580 to 1800, Goathurst is home to quite a number of Bacons. Other Bacons show up into the 1900's. If you have a Bacon in your line from Goathurst, as I do, I'd like to trade information. willbacon@charter.net.

I don't know where he was born but it was about 1895 and I believe he was living in Somerset in 1911. I would be very grateful if someone could find him and other members of his household. Thanking you in advance with kind regards, Dave

Hello Jim,

I don't have any personal connection to the WINES family but saw your posting on the Rootsweb ENG-Somerset mailing list, as all messages on this board also appear there.
I just thought I would check some of the readily available resources - FreeBMD, FreeReg, census etc. which are normally the "first port of call" to see if some useful leads could be found.

Vivien
