Harriett Hopper b Ewell

I am searching for information on Harriett Hopper, she was born about 1830 in Ewell, Surrey. In 1856 she had a daughter, I think born out of wedlock named Harriett Ann Hopper in Lambeth. In 1860 she married Frederick Scholey in Kensington and had two more daughters, Julia Mary (1860 Notting Hill) and Emily Eliza (1863 Hoxton). In 1864 Frederick Scholety died and Harriett never remarried. I think that Harriett Hopper's father's name was William and her mother Sarah. Is someone able to help me out with Harriett and her family, thanks, Julie

James Barnes m. Jane Coppard

Seeking information on James Barnes married Jane Coppard.
They had a daughter Eliza Barnes b.C1858 UK married David Keep b. C1857 Uk. I have found a Free BDM UK entry for m. 1875 Camberwell Vil 1d Pg 857. They had Frederick James Keep (b. Free BDM UK 1876 Camberwell 1d 761); Emma Keep; Ethel Emily Keep b. C1883; Frank David Keep b. 1885; Arthur George Keep b. 1887. David, Eliza, Ethel Emily, Frank and Arthur came to Australia in 1894.
My line starts with a Clara Jane Barnes (came to Australia in 1890 and m. 1892 James Kershaw)who I was told had a cousin Frank in Australia, so by working with this information, I am hoping that Clara's father, James Barnes (m. Sarah) is a brother to Eliza and a son to David and Jane. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Carol

Thomas James

I am researching the family of Thomas James bc 1793 Surrey.
His and/or his family are on the 1841 - 1871 Surrey censuses. Most of the censuses showed they lived in St Mary's Parish/Newington, Lambeth, Brixton hundred. Thomas James was a shoe/boot maker according to the censuses and his dght's (Sarah) wedding license.

Thomas James'w wife was named Sarah (b1800 Kingston, Surrey). Probable children were: John bc 1818, Sarah bc 1821, Jane bc 1832, and Caroline bc 1837 all Surrey. They probably had other children that possibly died young.

On the 1871 Surrey census Thomas James is listed as 75 with a wife age 57. Her name is not legible on the census.

Dght Sarah James is never listed in the home of her father. There is one on the 1841 shown as a servant in the home of Edward Ranklin that is the most likely one to be her. She married in 1844 to James Peck.

If you have any information on the family of the above Thomas James I will truly appreciate your sharing it.
Regards, Bettye

Hulbert Family

I am doing some research on my Hulbert family. My great great grandfather was Thomas Hulbert who was born in 1807 in Tooting Graveney, Surrey, England. His mother was Charlotte Hulbort. I don't know if she was married at the time of his birth. I do believe she married Thomas Overton in 1809 in Camberwell, Surrey, England. I would like to know if she had any other children, who the father of Thomas Hulbert was, and who her parents were. I do know that Thomas Hulbert became a British soldier and came to Canada in the early 1800's. His wife was Sarah Spearman. They settled in Toronto after his discharge from the army. Any factual information or suggestions anyone has that may help further my research would be most appreciated.

Hi, I am trying to find information on John Champion and his ancestors. I know John was born in 1795 in Richmond, Surrey and came to Australia in 1813/1814 as a convict and married Sarah in 1818. I can track everything in Australia. What I can't find is anything of his parents etc. His fathers name is Anthony, as of yet I can find no information of his mother. There was a story I was told that the family originally came from France. If anyone could point me in a direction or suggest somewhere to look that would be great. Thank you in Advance.
Tanya - tanyahill1973@yahoo.com.au

James families Surrey

I am hoping that someone is researching the James families of the Bermondsey and Lambeth areas of Surrey in the 1800s.
The marriage license for Sarah James to James Peck dated 4 June 1843 stated that her father was Thomas James a shoemaker. I have perused the censuses from 1841 to 1881 and have found what I believe to be her parents. The Thomas that I founc is always shows as a shoemaker except for onc census where he was listed as a bootmaker. In 1841 the family was in Bermondsey but Sarah was not living with them. After that they were in the Lambeth area. Sarah stated on one census that she was born in Bermondsey c 1823. Thomas and Sarah James had these children shown on the censuses: John bc 1818, Jane bc 1832 abd Caroline bc 1837.
I believe that John m. Charlotte Howse in 1839.
What church in the Bermondsey area would these children have been christened at ? I will appreciate any leads to find the parents of Sarah James.

Hello,

I have a marriage date for Richard Newman and Ann Brown (Southwark, 1828), but it is a Pallot's Marriage Index, which only has the names, dates and placename on it. There is no indication of Fathers name. Similarly, because of the date, I can't get hold of a birth certificate for Richard or Ann - it might be possible to get a Christening date, but still no information on the father or mother.

How can I extend my family research beyond this point? Will I have to go and see the church records where this marriage occured? Will this have more information?

Hope you can help

Phil
I started my family tree research a couple of months back and stumbled across an record from Pallot's Marriage Index. Unfortunately I didn't save a copy of the original file at the time but I now think it is part of my family and I want to see the original again. Unfortuately my searches of ancestry and genesreunited can't seem to find this record again and I think I'm going mad!
I did make a note of the information that was on the slip and would appreciate it if someone with access to Pallot's Marriage Index could see if they can find the original record for me:

Date of marriage - 05/08/1806
Place of marriage - St Giles, Camberwell, Surrey
John Legon & Mary Rawlins

Much appreciated,
Gemma
I am not sure if I am in the right place, but I am trying to find out something about the family of ROBERT SAUNDERS who was married to JANE AMELIA SCOTT. According to the birth certificate of their son, WALTER GEORGE SAUNDERS, my grandfather, in 1877 they were living at 11, Benmore Street, Deptford. Is anyone able to do a lookup on the ''71, '81 or '91 censuses for the rest of the family, etc? If this is not the right place for me to be asking can someone direct me to the correct one.
Thanks.

Cottage on Guildford Road, Abinger Hammer

This is a shot in the dark here but hopefull some one out there can help me.

I am trying to find out who the occupents were in the 1940s of a cottage on Guildford Road in Abinger Hammer.

I have two problems here.

First is although I do know which cottage I am looking for I do not know the exact address. However the cottage is very easy to locate. It is the first cottage past the school on Guildford Road. It is directly accross from the green. It is one of two (if memory serves me correct) attached cottages and is higher than the main road.

The second problem I have is that since I am in Canada I have no access to the electorial roll for that period.

I do know for sure that there should have been at least two females listed (Ada and Ethel) and a male (not sure of his name). Ethel would have been married to the male. Ada was not married.

If some one could at least find the address for me I think the Family History Centre may be able to help me with a name. I know that Ethel and Ada died in the sixties and are burried in the Abinger Church yard.

Thanks to any one that can help.

I am still trying to find any info on John Freeman born c 1800 married to Sarah (nee Edmonds) who had three children, Margaret, John and Henry. They lived in Lambeth, Surrey and he appears to have died around 1840. In the 1851 census records he is no longer listed with the family and Sarah is a widow. Any help would be gratefully appreciated. Henry the youngest son was born on 12 December 1840. Margaret Freeman, the eldest child was born on 25 November 1836 but not sure when son John was born. Please if anyone has any info please get in touch as I desperately want to know when John Freeman died. The death records I have looked at don't seem to fit the date he appears to have died, unless he left the family. Please Help....

MARTIN family, Lambeth, 1881-1905

Can anyobne offer some advice on how I can increase my certainty about my ancestor and his family?

From my grandfather William Charles MARTIN (2)'s birth certificate (Lambeth, 5th Jan 1905) I know his father was William MARTIN and his mother was Emily Sarah (nee COOPER). From their marriage certificate (Lambeth 1903) I know my gt gt gndfather was Charles MARTIN (1), a coal porter, working on the Thames. So far, so good.

I have found a Charles MARTIN, coal porter, in the 1901 census, (b abt 1846, lambeth) living with his 4 boys, including my gt granddad, William, at 36 Goding St, Lambeth. I'm certain that this is our family because the aforementioned 1903 marriage certificate shows one of the witnesses as George TROWSE, who also lived in Goding St, according to the 1901 census, and was probably a family friend.

However I'm stuck trying to find the correct birth certificates for the 4 boys and their father, Charles. I have found birth listings for Charles' boys, all born Lambeth (which is correct according to the census), but the birth certificates I've received shows the father as Frederick Charles MARTIN. In the 1891 census, I again found Charles MARTIN (not Frederick Charles MARTIN), dock labourer, b abt 1849, Hackney (note the discrepancies with the 1901 census) living in Lambeth, at 37 Duke St (now Duchy st), Lambeth. Again plausible. In 1891 this Charles MARTIN lived with his wife, Emma, with the 4 boys with the same names as in the 1901 census. We were also surprised to have found 4 older girls in the family in 1891, who must have left home by the 1901 census.

I have sent off for some birth certificates for some of Charles' kids, which show Emma MARTIN (nee RICHARDSON) as the mother but Frederick Charles MARTIN as the father.

How can I confirm which is correct? I've searched censuses to see if I could find a Frederick Charles Martin with a son William (b abt 1885) but with no luck. I'm really stumped on this now and would be delighted to learn how I can proceed with a higher degree of certainty. My family tree, Martin-Peterson, is availble to view on Ancestry.co.uk. Thanks in advance for any pearls of wisdom!

William Charles Martin (4)

Parents of Sarah Lechford who md. Benjamin Browne 1596

It has been a few years since I first posted this query so thought I would try again, as well as updating my e-mail [which was really out of date], in case someone tried to reach me off site. I am still looking for the parents of Sarah Lechford/Leachford/Lashford/Latchford, the wife of Rev Benjamin Browne of Horley, Surrey, Eng who died 1638 in Ifield Parish, Sussex, England? Supposedly his wife was Sarah Leachford/Lechford born abt 1575 in at Charlwood/Shelwood Manor, Surrey, England; the Ancestral File & IGI show her as the daughter of Richard Lechford (1540/1547 - 1611) and wife Ann Lusher but information I have found on this family does not show a daughter Sarah. Benjamin Browne & Sarah {Lechford ?] had a daughter Sarah who md. Pardon Tillinghast and my line is firm from there on. I just need to find the correct parents for Sarah Lechford. Maybe by this time someone has found them - in a will or some English records that I have not/do not have access to?

Hope someone with access to the relevent records or can look them up, can help me discover the baptism record of George William King. On the census he always says he was born either Newington or Walworth in or around 1832. Can not find him on the IGI . Father should be William a bricklayer and his mother possibly Elizabeth.

Hello,

thanks very much for the info you've given.

Unfortunately, I am finding it difficult to confirm "who the father is".

I have an ancestors name, George W Newman b ~1860 in Battersea, Surrey, but I can't be sure who his father is. A census record search suggests it could be a Francis T Newman, but there is no real way of confirming it. The birth place and dates match up however, so it's quite a good certainty?

I was thinking that getting a Birth Certificate would confirm the Fathers name, but obviously you need the Fathers name first to confirm the Birth Certificate!

I am researching my gg grandparents William Edgington and Jane Savage. They were married April 11, 1846 at the Church in the Parish of St George the Martyr, Southwark. Fathers are listed as John Edgington and Samuel Savage. The witnesses are William Stead and Eliza Blackburn.

They came to America shortly afterwards

Does anyone recognize these people? Any and all help very much appreciated.

Thank you.
James Ryan Ancestry - Bermondsey Surrey

Hi there, I've recently been trying to find out how far my Ryan ancestry goes back to, and whether I actually have any Irish roots. However I have recently reached a stumbling block at my ggg grandfather James Ryan born 1828 in Bermondsey. As far as I can make out the last census that I could find James in was the 1851 where he was living with his grand-father Joseph Marsh and mother Susanna Ryan. I wish to find his ancestors beyond this, however I have found this hard with no father living with him at the time.

However his descendents all state the occupation of Chimney Sweep which led me to presume that this was a family occupation. I would realy appreciate any advice in tracking James' acestors down. 1851 census cituation Class: HO107; Piece: 1581; Folio: ; Page: 4; GSU roll: 174817.

Thanks
Thomas Ryan.

Collis-Jones Family

I am searching for information on my grandparents' families. My grandmother, Margaret Annie Collis, was born in Wimbledon, Surrey on 19 Mar 1885. I know that she had a sister, Annie, who was 3 years younger, so would have been born in 1888. I'm not sure if there were other siblings. Her parents were John Collis and Sarah Emma Potter. My grandfather, Charles Arthur Jones, was born in Battersea, London on 8 Jan 1877. His parents were William Jones and Ann Parr. He had several sisters and at least one brother. My grandparents emigrated to Canada in 1907. My grandfather went back to fight with the Canadian army during WWI, but there are no records that he had any communication with his family in England during that time. Two of his sons were in England during WWII and they visited my grandmother's sister's family - we still have a letter from her sister's husband, whose name I believe was Willam(?) Phipps written to my grandmother to let her know how "the boys" were doing.
I would be very appreciative if anyone has any information about either of my grandparents' families.....

Walworth birth of Frederick Chatfield

I am trying to find my grandfather's birth record (or anything else about him)
He was allegedly born Walworth in about 1872 - at least that was recorded by his father in 1881 census for Romany Road but then nothing until marriage in 1896. He served in British Army 1892-1917 and died in Wendover Buckinghamshire in 1949 In Army records he gave his birthplace as Holborn.
He might not have been born in time for the 1871 census and 1871 was before his parents' marriage in 1872!
I have been unable to find any record of a birth certificate for him!
Please help
David
