Hi thanks again Bryan

Looking at the marrage certificate for Samuel Shaw & Mary Lewis wich is dated Dec 23 1923, Samuel's age is 27 and Mary is 23. So I have worked Samuel's year of birth back to circa 1896. I had previously guessed his birth to be about 1890

Samuels occupation is down as Miner but Mary's is blank. At the time of marrage Samuel lived in Goldthorpe and Mary lived in Highgate. Their fathers Richard shaw & Richard Henry Lewis are both down as being miners also.

Hi there,

Looking for a lost uncle who is still possibly living. He was put in to care as a child and was adopted around the age of 1. Thought to have been born around 1960, `961 or 1962. Hope someone replies as to any information. His mother is Irene Dunn.

Stephen,
Thanks for the update on your progress.

The attached is possibly the 1911 census record for Mary Alice LEWIS. I could not see any likely candidate for Samuel SHAW.
If you have access to the census records then you should be able to track back through to 1841 (though the LEWIS family may be troublesome). If you don't have a subscription to Ancestry or Findmypast then try your local library (take a USB memory stick with you for copying stuff)
(Edit - I see from your tree that you have already tracked the ancestors of Alice)

Should you want further help then you should provide the other information which is on the marriage certificate -
the ages of the Bride and Groom
Where they were living
The occupations of the Bride and Groom
The occupations of the fathers of the Bride and Groom.

Bryan

Hi,

Thanks for the advice / help, and sorry for any duplicate posts I may have posted. I'm a complete novice at this family tree stuff and find myself getting lost very easy. I now have copies of the following:

-My paternal fathers birth certificate, which confirms Samuel Shaw and Mary Alice Lewis as his parents.

-the marrage certificate for Samuel Shaw & Mary Alice Lewis dated 26/12/1923, which name their fathers as Richard Shaw & Richard Henry Lewis. It also lists the witnesses as Samuel Henry Jones & Gladys Lewis.

My next step now is fining info for 'Richard Shaw'

It's no point asking my father or his eldest brother about their fathers family as they say they're clueless. 'sigh'
So this looks like his birth

Births Dec 1867
Booth Eli Dewsbury 9b	604

and this the marriage of his parents

Marriages Mar 1861
BOOTH Joseph Dewsbury 9b	541
Pickersgill Martha Dewsbury 9b	541

If you get a copy of his birth certificate, it will contain his mother's maiden name to confirm this. You can order from outside the UK and have it sent to your address there.

From the marriage correct certificate you should be able to find the names of the respective fathers. You should then be able to find the family on the various census returns back to 1841.
The houses are not old.

It may be useful to try to work it from your end - who was the last ancestor you had called FOX in England and what happened to his/her siblings.

Bryan

Hi,

Checking the address on Google shows that it's a private residence, not a funeral home.

Obits aren't particularly popular in the UK, the most you're likely to find is a few lines giving the date, place & time of funeral.

Libraries tend to keep copies of local newspapers on microfiche, so you could try contacting Leeds City library by email and asking them to do a check around the date of death period. This link should take you to their local and family history service http://www.leeds.gov.uk/leisure/Pages/Local-and-family-histo...

Most libraries also keep historical copies of voting registers, it might be worth checking whether they have copies for 1970/71 and seeing who was registered to vote at the address you have.

Hope this helps
Best wishes
Linda

Thank you for responding.

The obituary card lists an address. 58 Thorn Drive, Gipton, Leeds, Yorkshire. Can someone determine if this is for a private residence or funeral home? Is there any local newspaper that might have copies of newspapers online so I could view any obituary they might have? I would hope that it would name other family members and relatives.

(I am in Connecticut USA - If there is no newspaper online and I can not determine what the address on the card is for how would I get a death certificate?)I still have a few relatives overseas in Ireland before going the death certificate route.

Any help with the address in Gipton or local newspaper would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi,

I think the Joshep is a simple spelling error. The UK death register for Oct quarter 1971 has the following entry:
Joseph FOX dob 16 Mar 1917 (age 54) Leeds v.2c p.1081

Allowing up to six weeks to register a birth (if, in fact, your Joseph was born in England or Wales), means your Joseph's birth would have been registered in either the March or June quarters of 1917.

Births Mar q 1917
Joseph FOX (mother's m/n GOLD) Hammersmith v.1a p.316
Joseph FOX (mmn SYKES) Dewsbury v.9b p.779
Joseph A FOX (mmn CLEAVER) Holborn v.1b p.942
Joseph H FOX (mmn HAWKES) Worksop v.7b p.99

Births June q 1917
Joseph FOX (mmn WOODS) West Derby v.8b p.742

I've checked out Ancestry trees and there aren't any containing a Joseph FOX with the given date of birth. As already suggested, your best option would be to obtain a copy of the death certificate in the hope that a relative is named as the informant.

Best wishes,
Linda

Thank you for replying.

The actual spelling on the obituary card is Joshep Fox not Joseph. I know that this looks strange. The date of death is 10-29-1971 and it says he was 54 years old all on the obituary card. I incorrectly said 10-28-1971 in my first post. You said the mothers maiden name might be Sykes. Do you have any idea what the fathers name is? My mothers maiden name is Fox. Most of her ancestors are from Ireland. The other names you mention are no where in the family tree.

First of all I assume that you mean Joseph Fox and that was his full name. If the age is correct there are only a limited number of Joseph Fox births in the Birth Indexes for the relevamt period and the most likely one is in Dewsbury in the March Quarter of 1916. If this is correct then his mother's maiden name was Sykes and he probably had several siblings Charles E, Beatrice, James, Ernest, Mary, Laurence, Gerald and Geoffrey. Do any of these names ring a bell ?

All the above is intuitive and may be completely wrong so you really need to pay for a copy of his death certificate which in 1971 should include his date of birth and narow down the possibilities. It may also give the name of a relative as the informant which will help in the search for the right Joseph Fox. A word of warning though, death certificates ae only as good as the knowledge of the informant and in some cases this has turned out to be erroneous.

I am trying to find out how he fits into my family tree. This obituary card was found in a scrapbook of a family relative who passed away. None of my living relatives knows who he was. Does anyone out there know who his parents were or if he had other brothers or sisters. My mothers maiden name is Fox. I am in the Connecticut, USA.
James W. and Ann Christian Harrison

I am trying to locate Ann Christian Harrison who is a cousin of mine. She was born in Midleton, Cork, Ireland and later married James Harrison and settled in York.

Their children are:

1. Ann who married someone by the surname of Williams and they have two known children.

2. Cyril Harrison

3. Georgina Harrison who married I believe Gordon Welburn and may have a few children.

4. John Harrison

I have lost touch since the mid 1980's and would like to reconnect with Ann if possible. They may have been from the Harrogate area of York.

Any help would be appreciated.
Bob Harnden
Florida USA
Re: Jefferies

Dee,
I see on Freebmd the idex for his birth
Births Jun qtr 1928
Jefferies George F, Richardson Bramley 9b 316
(the Bramley district may well have included Beeston. There was some swapping with Holbeck)

His birth certificate will give you the name of his parents and then you can trace the marriage of his parents and so on back in time. Once you have people on the 1911 census it becomes easier.

I have tried to find a marriage of a George Jefferies (& variants) to a Richardson without result. She may have been married before so her marriage would be done in her married name but then the births of children would show her maiden name. Or maybe the father was not called George.

You can find out if the George born in 1828 had siblings by seraching for births of children called JEFFERIES with mothers name RICHARDSON. Beware that there could be other couples with the same surnames.

Bryan

FreeBMD has index of Births Marriages and Deaths from 1837 to about 1960.
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/

BMD certificates cost £9.25 from here
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

The info you find on UK bmd certificates can be read here:
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/most_customer...
hi
I know that she married in 1904 and i can locate her from then onwards, i dont have alot of info on her apart from the 1911 census, when she was married to john william denny but that doesnt show her place of birth which is why she hasnt been so easy to find , then the only other info is what is on her marriage cert, her dad was called john hall and was deceased at time of wedding and was a quarryman, the only match i keep stumbling on is an 1881 census for a mary ellen hall born in scales lancashire, her dad was a quarryman and her mum was called mary ann relph(jackson) , do you think that i could be on the right track ?

The 1881 census shows a Mary Ellen Hall daughter of John Hall a quarryman living in Baycliff Aldingham. She was born in Scales about 1875 to John Hall and Mary Ann(Ralph). Looks as though John died 1887 possibly.

Hi Ruth,
On the 1891 census Emily PEARSON can be found living with her aunt & uncle Joseph P & Maria A PATTERSON in Durham. A check through the marriage registers shows a marriage for Joseph PATTERSON & Maria PEARSON in Sept 1876 Durham, so Maria is likely to be a sister of Emily's father.

Back-tracking Maria PEARSON through the census and you can see her on the 1861 census in Durham with widowed father and siblings:
John PEARSON b.1832 Merrington Durham occ: Plasterer
John PEARSON b.1853 Durham
James PEARSON b.1855 Durham
Maria PEARSON b.1857 Durham

This James PEARSON appears on the 1871 census (adding three years to his previously stated age)

James PEARSON age 19 b.1852 Durham occ: Plasterer
Mary PEARSON wife age 22 b.1849 Kidderminster
Frederick O PEARSON son age 1month b.1871 Durham

This information ties in with the baptism record found by Claire.

A check through the marriage registers shows:
James PEARSON & Mary EARLY March 1869 Durham.

1861 census Durham
John EARLY b.1825 Wilton Wiltshire
Sarah EARLY b.1825 Kidderminster
Mary EARLY b.1849 Kidderminster
+ three siblings

I can't find the 1881 census which should show Emily with her parents and siblings but her parents can be seen on the 1891 & 1901 census.

Hope this helps
Regards
Linda

Hi Ruth,

I've found a baptism for Emily Pearson dated 7 March 1875 at St. John the Baptist church, Halifax. Her parents are James and Mary Pearson, and James' occupation is a plasterer. I hope that's enough information for you to rule this possibilty in or out.

Thanks,
Claire
