Hi Carol,
Here's the link to the Glasgow Message Board, it's Lanarkshire County in Scotland:

Your grandfather might have had mates (friends) from Glasgow he met in the army. Also there would have been more jobs in Glasgow than Portsoy.
Don't know if you've seen this but there are old photos of Portsoy in the following link:

The Mitchell Library in Glasgow is very helpful too if you want to email them with queries.
