Taubman Royal ancestry

Greetings,

My Great grandmother was Ester Taubman from the Isle of Man. I have done extensive resarch concerning our Manx Taubman ancestry. I have found that most Manx Taubmans are actually descended through two intertwined lines, directly to both King Alfred the Great and King William I, the Conqueror. One line goes through the Percy family the other to the equally famous Neville line, two very important antagonists in the "War of the Roses".

I have a database of Taubmans, however only Manx Taubmans. If you wish, I can look up your particular Taubman (no charge) and determine if I can find a connection to the royal lineage. I am also interested in finding any Taubmans who may be closely related to mine, as I have no real knowlege of my Manx family other than Esther's father George, being a Stonemason.

I also have knowledge of Taubman origins in Austria/Germany.

Sincerely,

William Supernaw
supernaw242000@yahoo.com

Blakeneys on Isle of Man

Hello,
I'm hoping someone out there may have info relating to a member of the Blakeney family, probably Charles, who came to the Isle of Man from Ireland sometime before 1730.

He would have been the brother of Lord William Blakeney. The two had been in a dispute, and the brother is reported to have fled to the Isle of Man. I don't have a definite date, or specifically which brother it was.

I am a descendant of Capt. John Blakeney, who, according to family history, was born at Mt. Blakeney, Co. Limerick, Ireland in 1732. He came to the US around 1750 and eventually moved to South Carolina.

It has long been part of family lore that he was a nephew of Lord William Blakeney, but no documentation whatsoever has been found in Ireland to back this up. One theory is that he was the son of the brother who fled to the Isle of Man.

I know of probate records of a Robert Blakeney (d. 1778) from the Isle of Man. This could possibly have been a son of the Blakeney who originally fled from Ireland (I haven't seen the record myself, but someone who did states that this Robert Blakeney was born in Ireland).

If anyone has any info that may help, I would love to hear from you.

Thanks!
John

CORKILL FAMILY TREE - ISLE OF MAN - 1800'S

Hi, I just found out that my great-grandfather, Evan Corkill, was born on the Isle of Man around 1827. And his father, John Corkill was born there around 1800. I was wondering if anyone else is researching this family. I have also found out that there are several variations on the spelling of this name: CORKHILL, CORNHILL, CORKILL, COCKILL. ... My great-grandmother was one of the British Home Children. Her name was Mary Elizabeth Corkill, and she was born in Liverpool, England, around 1860. And, she was shipped to Halifax, Nova Scotia, during the summer of 1875, at Age 15. She was living in Byrow Hall in Liverpool, and there were four younger Corkill children living there at the exact same time. They were Julia, Esther, John, and Robbie. I am guessing that they were all members of the same family. Possibly Mary was their older sister, but I don't know why she didn't go over on the same ship in April 1874 with her younger siblings. ..... In case anyone else is searching for "Corkhill" ancestors, there were 3 more British Home Children with the same last name.

Seeking help/information regarding Elizabeth Taggert (Taggart) my gt.grandmother born in Douglas IoM in 1836.She had a sister called Margaret. Her mother was Ann Christian who married John Taggert. Elizabeth married Charles Jarvies (later corrupted to Jervis)born 1827 in Twemlow, Cheshire. Elizabeth and Charles married in Liverpool in 1863. On their marriage certificate Charles' occupation was documented as ship's steward. Their first son,John Jarvies was born in Isle of Man in 1866. Subsequent children were Walter b.1868,Wlliam b.1870 both born in Liverpool and Maggie b. 1873, Frederick b.1875, Richard (my grandfather) b.1880 each in Birkdale, Southport. I'm having difficulty tracing the correct line of the Taggert and Christian families and am unable to discover where on IoM Elizabeth and Charles were living with their first son John. I would love to hear from anyone with similar research interests.

I am looking for information on parents or siblings of my great-grandparents, Andrew or Anthony Caine and Mary Inglis.
Hello to all,
In reseraching my first American Ancestor I found an odd reference to the Isle of Man as a possible place of his birth. Richard Skinner was born around 1639-40. He emigrated to New Jersey from Jersey in 1665. Richard was a carpenter by trade in service to the Carterets of Jersey. Anything on Skinners of the Isle of Man in relation to this would be appreciated.
Peter Corkill/Ellinor Clague

I have been researching Robert Corkill or Corkhill born 1820 in Maughold, parents Peter and Ellinor Clague. Robert m Helen Nicholson in Penninghame in Wigtownshire then migrated to Australia. There appears to be some confusion about this couple, Peter and Ellinor Clague as there is another Peter and Ellinor Corkill. There appears to be no marriage for Peter & Ellinor Clague. I am trying to discover if Robert had a sister, Mary Ann born about 1822/3. I believe these two may be related. Any help unravelling Corkills gratefully received.
Robin in Australia

CORKILL's in Ramsey in 1841 Census

Hello.

At someone's suggestion, I have gone to this web site:
http://www.lawsons.ca/
and have looked at all the CORKILL's in Ramsey. I'd like to offer them here:

Annie, 40, Anne, 30, Ann, 6, Catherine, 85, Catherine ,40, Catherine, 20, Catherine, 8, Catherine, 1, Charlotte, 5, Christian, 25, Edward, 4, Edward, 4 mos., Ellen, 1, Elizabeth, 60, Elizabeth, 7, Esther, 35, Esther, 25, Esther, 4, Evan, 14, Henry, 10 mos., Isabella, 5, Jane, 70, Jane, 40, Jane, 30, Jane, 20, Jane, 20, Jane, 15, Jane, 14, Jane 8, John, 70, John, 45, John, 40, John, 15, John, 13, John, 6, John, 5, John, 3, Judy, 30, Lewis, 4, Margaret, 85, Margaret, 60, Margaret, 45, Margaret, 35, Margaret, 15, Margaret, 10, Margaret, 8, Maria, 25, Mary, 45, Mary, 25, Mary, 20, Mary, 12, Mary, 10, Mary, 2, Philip, 6, Robert, 40, Robert, 14, Robert, 12, Robert, 9, Thomas, 25, Thomas, 13, William, 60, William, 30, William, 15, William, 12, William, 9, William, 6, William, 5, William, 4, William, 1.

My ancestors were John and Esther (CORKILL) CORKILL who married in the Lezayre Parish in Ramsey in 1822. And, they reportedly had 10 children, but I don't know the names of all of them. Their children were born between 1823 and 1838, reportedly. So, comparing the names and dates, from the above names, I think these were in this family:

John CORKILL, 40 ? in 1841
Esther CORKILL, 35
John CORKILL, 15
Evan CORKILL, 14
Robert CORKILL, 12 ?
William CORKILL, 12 ?
Margaret CORKILL, 10 ?
Anne CORKILL, 6
Lewis CORKILL, 4

If they had 10 children, 3 names are missing, for instance, James. There is no James mentioned in 1841 as being in Ramsey.

Of the older people living in 1841, John CORKILL's father might have been William CORKILL, 60, or John CORKILL, 70. And, Esther's mother might have been Margaret CORKILL, 60, Etc.

Both the sons, John and Evan, lived in Liverpool when married and their children were born there. I don't remember whether I know the names of John's children; they might be available on-line. Evan's children were: Edward, Lewis, Mary Elizabeth, Julia, Esther, John, and Robert.

Just thought I'd offer this in case it will help other reserchers.

Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA)

(Evan's son, Lewis, died as a child. The other 6 children were all sent to Canada as "British Home Children." (In the U.K. - "child migrants.")

Groom Family early 1700s IOM

Does anyone know if the Groom family or derivative of that name was a registered surname for the IOM in early 1700s? I found a bio from 1904 of a descendent of John Groom that said the family were Manx. We know they were in VA, USA by 1750. Would there be ship manifests and specific ports from which they might have sailed? Any help would be appreciated.

Mathew Halliwell

I am after any information regarding Mathew Halliwell born about 1820 in Douglas, Isle of Man.
This information comes from the 1891 census, where Mathew was living with his daughter in Great Lever, Lancaster. It could be that both the husband and wife of this family were both Halliwell's as Mathew is signed in as the Father in law and as its in relation to the head (Henry Halliwell) normally, then the wife Eliza would also have been a Halliwell. Henry and Eliza had 2 daughters and 4 sons and I have every reason to believe that one of these sons is my Grandfather James Arthur Halliwell.
Anyway I was more interested in the fact that Mathew has said that he was born in Douglas on the Isle of Man.
Any clues?

"British Home Children" / "Child Migrants"

Hello. If you know a little about the history of the United Kingdom (and Isle of Man, etc.), you know that there were very bad conditions there during the 1800's. And, even back to the 1600's. "Powers that be" started sending "unwanted children" out to their Colonies from the 1600's, and it continued into the 1900's.

This included all their Colonies, including the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Africa, etc. The children being "sent" to Australia, New Zealand, and Africa are still referred to as "Child Migrants" and there are "Groups" which discuss them. They sometimes suffered a worse fate than some of the children "sent" to Canada.

Not only did "U.K. officials" send young children - to their Colonies - but the children went down to Age 3. * And, "they" didn't think it was necessary to keep siblings together. In some cases, one or two siblings were sent to Canada and some of their siblings were sent to Australia. And, many times the parents were not told that their child was being shipped out of the country. And, the story goes on !

If you have a few hours, go to the archives of the British Home Children List and "browse" through the postings, especially from 2000 to 2004. Be forewarned, some of it will be a 3-tissue read for you.

www.rootsweb.com
Mailing List INDEX
British Home Children

And, there is also a BHC Message Board - where you can find additional information.

Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA)

* My great-grandmother and her 6 siblings were born in Liverpool, England, but their father, Evan CORKILL, was born on the Isle of Man in 1827. He was one of 10 children. He met Elizabeth Quayle from "Whitehaven" and they married in Liverpool, England, ~1851.

One son died young; the first son went to Canada in 1873, as an older teen and went directly to British Columbia. In 1874, the 4 youngest siblings, from Ages 11 to .3. were sent to Nova Scotia, and each went to different homes. The oldest daughter came over in 1875.

In 1879, in Nova Scotia, Mary CORKILL married another BHC, Stanley LEWIS, who had also been in the Liverpool Sheltering Homes. (It opened in 1873.) In 1881 they migrated to Massachusetts and raised 13 children there.

Of the 6 CORKILL children, the oldest remained in British Columbia, married and raised children there. (I have heard from descendants of him.) The 2 youngest sons, 5 and 3, did not fare so well. One married at an older age, married an older woman, and then died before she did. No children. The youngest never married. He remained in Nova Scotia and was a caretaker for older men until his death in his 60's. The oldest girl was my great-grandmother. The next girl married in Nova Scotia and had many children there. The next girl married in Nova Scotia, but her husband was from Nantucket, MA, and they moved to Massachusetts. They had many children, but only 2 daughters survived.

Note: The CORKILL children lost their mother in 1873. Their father was a Master Mariner who traveled around the world. So, the children were sent to live with their uncle, John CORKILL, also in Liverpool. Evan CORKILL was still alive into the 1880's, and had remarried. And, I would love to find out if he kept in contact with his 6 children. And, did their uncles and aunts on the Isle of Man and in Liverpool keep in contact with them? And, I would love to find out if the 6 CORKILL siblings remained in contact with each other. Because it was the 1870's, there was very little information in their "Liverpool records."

Notice found in old paper.
"DEAD IN THE SNOW...The Body of One-time Prominent Woman Picked Up by Police...New York, Dec 31, 1894 - A sad story was brought to light this morning in the finding by a policeman of a woman's body hidden behind a pile of lumber and partly covered with snow. Later in the day the dead woman was identified as Mrs Flora Northrup, a native of Scotland, sixty-eight years old. She was at one time a principal of the Royal School for Officer's Daughters at Castleton, Isle of Man, England.
About eight years ago, she came to this country and taught music in New York and other cities, but became addicted to the use of liquor and quickly went from bad to worse. It is supposed the woman cast herself down behind the lumber pile and went to sleep during the snow-storm."

Please do not contact me, I have no other information.
Kneale of Ramsey

My grandfather was John Kneale who lived in Ramsey. I don't know when he was born but think it must have been round about 1900. I don't know the name of my grandmother but at one time they both lived at Marine View in Ramsey. He had a daughter called Annie Edna (my mother) who married Sydney Stevenson from Maryport Cumbria. She died in 1951. I can't find the right Kneales as I don't really know who I'm looking for. I was born at Marine View in 1947 but can't find my name or my mothers registered in the Isle of Man.
There was a large family of my aunts and uncles but I don't know the relationship with John Kneale. The names I have are Lucy and Joe Salthouse, Phyllis and Jack Harrison, Millie and Frank. There are also cousins Barbara, Rhona and Doreen. There was a Kenny Clary(?) too. If anyone could help it would be great.
SCARF origins - Ireland & Isle of Man

Dear List members,
I am seeking any information which may confirm the early origins of my
ancestors. The following chart has been passed down generations of my family.

Have you ever encountered this family name or spelling variants?
Old Norse or Norman surname in Ireland, or origins elsewhere? The name is
thought to be Scandanavian/Viking or Norman. An ancestor may have been part
of the Norman forces who accompanied Strongbow during the English occupation
of Leinster.

The name Scarf with many spelling variants is commonly found in Isle of Man
and Orkney, Wales, Cumberland, Northumberland & Durham (particularly around
York, Leeds and Ripon). The name is recorded in the 13th.Century Assize rolls
for Yorkshire.

Family enquiries suggest that my earliest known ancestor was Cormac
Scarfthe, born circa 1560 who lived in Thormond, Munster, Ireland. His
origins are unknown.

The following chart has been handed down in this family.
Cormac SCARFTHE 1580 Ireland
Ainmire SCARFH 1600
Eoghan SCARFH 1640
Eoghan SCARFE 1670
Padraig SCARFF x1700
William SCARFE 1700 (migrated to Lonan,Isle of Man)
J.F. SCARF 1720 ?Manth
Thomas SCARF 1760 Canada
Eoin SCARF 1792 Canada
John SCARF ? Ireland
Beauchamp SCARF 1800 Ireland
Beauchamp SCARF 1830 Ireland

This chart does not confirm the place or country of residence in the period
before 1790. I only have proof of place of residence after 1790.

This family lived on the border of Co. Kilkenny and Co.Carlow,Ireland, ca.1800.
It is suspected that they were living in Co. Wexford at the time of the
1798 uprising and subsequently sought refuge on the Kilkenny/Carlow
border area ca.1800. They farmed at Coolcullen, Co. Klikenny and Baunreagh,
Old Leighlin, Co. Carlow in the period post 1800.

I have a strong suspicion that there is an Isle of Man connection because
the above list describes William Scarfe, born 1700 (migrated to Lonan,Isle
of Man).
I am aware that the surname Scarf, Scarfe, Scarff, Scarffe has existed on
the Isle of Man for many centuries. I am confused by the christian names on
the above list! Would the gaelic christian names Cormac, Ainmire, Eoghan,
Padraig have been in common use on the Isle of Man in the period 1500-1800,
or would they have been found only in Ireland?

Present day spellings of various branches of the family are
Scarff, Scariff(Ireland),
Scarfe, Scarff, Scarffe(Australia),
Scarf, Scarfe, Scharf(Canada).

The spelling of the early migrants to Ottawa valley, Canada, was Scarf and
Scarfe. At the time of their arrival in Canada they were illiterate, as
their migration documents were signed with their mark,"X". The entries were
written by officials as "Scarf" in the records. Over successive generations
the popular spelling changed to Scharf and is now the most frequently found
spelling in the descendants of the large family group who migrated to the
Ottawa valley, Canada circa 1820.

I seek any information which may identify the origins of this family pre 1800.
Any information or guidance would be appreciated!

Darryl Scarff

Murray, Wicklow Ireland to Isle of Man

Looking for information on the Murray family, from Wicklow, Ireland. They are in the 1881, 1891 & 1901 census for Malew, Isle of Man. In the 1881 census the family consists of:

Patrick, head, born approx. 1831
Jane, wife, born approx. 1838
Esther, daughter, born approx, 1861
Jane, daughter, approx. 1871
James, son, 1876
Thomas, son, 1877
Susan, daughter, 1879 (listed as granddaughter on 1891 census).

Also in the 1881 census is a William, born approx. 1867, listed as a servant living in Onchan, and Patrick, b. approx. 1865, a servant in St. Anne, which I believe are members of this Murray family from Wicklow.

I am trying to connect this family to my g-grandfather, William Murray. He alternately claimed Wicklow, IRE and IofM as his birth place and I know his father’s name was Patrick.
William J. Watterson b: 21 Nov 1802 & Ann Sayle b: 01 Jun 1801 - IOM

Wiiliam J. Watterson and Ann Sayle were married Douglas, Isle of Man 08 May 1827. They set sail for America on their wedding day and after arriving settled on a farm in Warrensville, Cuyahoga, Ohio where they lived in happiness rarely to be found in this world until 1872, when advancing years warned them to desist from active labor. They moved to Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio and together lived by themselves in a comfortable home on Charles St. Their devotion to each other was remarkable. They were seldom separated for even a few minutes.

Eleven children were born to them, ten sons and one daughter all of whom lived to years of maturity, the first to die being Julius Caesar Watterson who died at age 22, May 1864. Since then death has claimed six others of the children. At the time of death, Ann Sayle Watterson was 81 years of age and William J. Watterson was in his eightieth year. They died within five days of the other, she 16 Jun 1882 and he 21 Jun 1882, both in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio.

We are interested in knowing more about both of their families living on the IOM.

His father died in about 1957 on Isle of Man.

If anyone is able to establish who his parents were and when they were born... ie so I can look them up in the 1901 Census, I shall love you eternally.

Alternatively if someone can direct me to Isle of Man BMD records I can work on it myself.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Dave C

Kewley-IOM Any Help Info???

My name is Shana Kewley. My grandfather Leroy Rosebud Kewley born in Iowa 10/10/1907. His father Eli (middle possibly william)Kewley (married Sarah Wilson) and was born after his father left IOM. Unfortunately, his name was William Kewley. Any suggestions/help? Any general Kewley info? I did see a post from a John Wells and another person who said he had a lot of Kewley info. I would really appreciate anything. Until recently, I had no idea that there were Kewleys anywhere that were not my immidiate relatives. No clue where my name came from.

Thank you so much.
SK

BROOMHEADs from IoM

I have an ARTHUR BROOMHEAD born on the IoM - exact location unknown - into a family living in Sheffield. I suspect they had relations (not just freinds) on the Isle, and would be interested in corresponding with anyone with Broomhead family connections directly.

Unfortunately the Birth is in 1870, so just before General Registration began :-(

Happy New Year and best wishes,

Mike Broomhead (Manchester)
aroundM21@yahoo.co.uk
