Was James Ellis from Antrim, Northern Ireland. There are 87 Ellis in the british telephone book for Northern Ireland.

Most of the Anglo-Irish who went to Canada in the 1830's
were from the Republic of Ireland - Irish Free State was another term in census.

I'm not sure you will find Irish parish records for 1811
or James Ellis 1791.

The earliest census substitute in Ireland isn't until
1823-1837. www.genealogy.nationalarchives.ie The Tithe
Applotments. (I know the Ellis name from genealogy in Wicklow)

The next is the Griffith Valuation but Northern Ireland's are in the 1860's as the GV went from 1846-1864.
I was hoping that Godfrey was James Ellis's father name
and it would appear in the GV but no record.

There are two websites for researching Northern Ireland parish records:

www.emeraldancestors.com free to view and pay for records
www.rootsireland.ie - pay to view but have a good sale on right now. All you need for this site is the name and surname and fathers name and a decent year of birth, you can search all Ireland that way. If there is a record of Godfrey it will be there. A very unusual name for Ireland
at the time.
