There are a variety of sources for research in Carlow:
www.igp-web.com + Co. Carlow
www.censusfinder.com = United Kingdom, Ireland Co. Carlow
To get a birth record you will need a parish, preferably with on-line records but they are few - rootsweb has Carlow resources also
look to the Latter Day Saints website www.familysearch.org
there maybe something by entering name, otherwise try new the PILOT program, under 'search records on the main page. All microfiche numbers should be recorded and taken to your nearest LDS Heritage Center. Location finder is on the main page.
His parents may have been alive in 1853 and might be found on the Griffiths Valuation, look to his children's names for a possibility. The Griffiths Valuation has parish and townlands, important again is the parish. You can find these at www.failteromhat.com.
I checked these and it didn't help much as there were 19 records: You can narrow these down again maybe by 1/2 by checking parishes against denomination.
