Green Lane to Philadelphia

I am looking for information on a Bulger family that consisted of four children born in Carlow, emigrated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania:

John - born c. 1846; Anna - born c. 1848; Lucy - born 1856; and Edward - born 1847 OR born 1861. My gggrandfather was Edward, born 1861, with these three older siblings, (have family letters to confirm) but I keep finding info about another Edward w/ siblings of the same names born much earlier w/ the same background. I guess it is possible this first Edward died and his parents had another child and also named him Edward.

Their parents were likely John and Mary, and they all came to Philadelphia. The first indication they were in the States is the 1850 census, with the whole family (which predates my Edward). My Edward's naturaliztion documents indicate his immigration date as 1862, at one year old. (It also changed his spelling to Bolger).

I have also found a personal ad in the 1866 Phila Inquirer from father John Bulger seeking his four children (but not his wife), giving their Phila. address from 17 yrs previous. He is also seeking information on his brother William of Green Lane, Carlow. I have baptismal records for John Jr.'s children in Wilmington, Delaware and it lists his birthplace as Carlow, Ireland. Given John Sr.'s ad and this info, I am fairly confident I have the same family, but the two Edwards are throwing me off.

Any insight, tips, or similarities in other family stories would be greatly appreciated.

That might by Fr. Aughney. I think you should search in the Parish of Killeshin in Queens County as the Haughneys are from Graigue / Graiguecullen part of Carlow / Laoise. There are many records of their baptisms.

Here is a link to the 1911 census - again if you concentrate on the ones from Graigue.

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/results.jsp?sur...

Some of this generation of Haughneys have pubs in New York (Sullivan Street and near Carnagie hall.

The baptismalrecords are all on line

I also have Doyle,Connor/O'Connor from Carlow. As far as I can tell they were from Ballinakill, Ballyellin and perhaps other townlands in Carlow. Perhaps there is some connection here. In the 1825 Tithes, there was a Byrne next door and Murphys. I suspect there may have been a marriage with Byrne, Murphy, along the way, prior to 20th c. One Doyle immigrated to Ohio, NY, and there may be a Doyle family in Wisconson, possibly Idaho.

kathleen446@hotmail.com
Kenny Convicted 1791 Co. Carlow

John and James Kenny (B. 1770 and 1771 respectively) were tried in Co. Carlow in 1791 for robbery and sentenced to 7 years in Australia. They were aboard the Boddingtons in 1793 and served their time in NSW. Both were strong Catholics and advertised to the running of a catholic school in The Rocks, Sydney. John was hung in Parramatta, NSW in 1807 for murder. James started a school in Windsor, NSW and had a family. James married Alice Bird in 1811 at St Matthews Church, Windsor and died in 1843 at Inveralochry/Goulburn/Glen Kenny, NSW. James was a constable and had an understanding of the law.

I would love to hear from anyone with information about the family in Ireland, as after years of searching I still can't confirm the birth place or family of John and James.

Thank you!

Hello, looking for descendants of my great grandmother's family. My great grandmother was Annie Hayes, d/o Richard Hayes. Annie had a brother Nathaniel. Nathaniel was married to a Susana - their children were: Margaret born abt 1896; Richard born abt 1899; Samuel born abt 1901; Nathaniel born abt 1907; John born abt 1909 and Mary Anne born 1911. Estimated birth years are from their recorded ages at the time of the 1911 census.

Annie Hayes' daughter Elizabeth Hayes Griffith was my grandmother, she and her sisters immigrated to Canada that is why I have virtually no information on Annie Hayes' family. If you are a descendant of her brother Nathaniel or know one please contact me at sharrnad@hotmail.com, I would really, really like to break this brick wall.

Thanks in advance!

Sharron

You could perhaps try obituaries for a record In Ireland.
I believe the Irishtimes has an obituary archives, but other newspapers must have the same.
You can also contact the General Registry office in Dublin
www.groireland.ie for a death of Anthony Stanley Titford in the 1960's. See their policies for research. I know if you write in they will do and charge for some research, I'm sure there weren't a lot of Titford's in Ireland. You could do the same for Northern Ireland, PRONI, in Belfast.
You could also try finding Titford's in the phonebook in Ireland www.eircomphonebook.ie each county needs to be search but its pretty easy. If he had children they are likely to still be living and possibily Ireland, you can try BT telephone for Northern Ireland. Then when you have a few send them letters with your request for information. It sounds like of silly but it does work.

Annette

Also a new PILOT program found under 'search records' top left corner, pull down menu to find PILOT. You can use this for all counties.

The film numbers are found by clicking on the underlined names. You can take any film numbers to your nearest LDS Heritage Center to view films, phone first.
After 1864 these dates can be used to get copies of records from the General Registry Office in Dublin.
www.groireland.ie Also if you contact me codeannette@yahoo.ca I can give you two websites for birth and/or marriages one for Wicklow and one for Wexford which by policy of rootsweb message board I cannot put here.
I also have Cantwell Memorial Inscriptions which I cannot put on the message board but no record of a burial for John in Wicklow, there were only 3 there, no relationships.
However, Wexford has 9. Kilbride, Camolin isn't one of them.

eg: Elizabeth Morgan married 1876 Rathdrum Registration District Film No 101252 Vol. 7 Pg. 797.

Nothing 1876 for James Archbold, however, a John Archbold has the same film no. as Elizabeth Morgan but instead of Rathdrum it is Rathdown Registration District.
I'm not sure what the error is. Either John should be James and/or Rathdrum should be Rathdown. A description of
Civil Registrations and the towns they cover can be found
on www.from-ireland.net

Both Rathdrum RD, Wicklow

James two in 1883, Rathdown Registration District, Dublin or Wicklow

Elizabeth Archbold Oct-Dec 1887 Balrothery, Dublin
#101061, Vol.2 Pg. 353

John Archbold Jan-March 1890 Balrothery, Dublin
#101063 no volume or page number

Annette Code
'genealogy for fun'
There is a great website for Carlow
www.igp-web.com + Carlow an excellent resource

www.censusfinder.com United Kingdom+Ireland+County

www.familysearch.org has some Carlow records and their new PILOT has records to 1950's, 117 records for Jacob.Find PILOT under 'search records' top left.

Thomas Jacob - Bagnalstown emigrated from Cobh 29 Sept 1924 to New York with a link to Ellis Is. passenger records. Free to join and search - John maybe there.

Marriage: John Jacob July-Sept 1881 Carlow Registration District Film No. 101254 Vol.3, Pg. 272 and same again
for Elizabeth Anne Pierce. The marriage certificate should have his and her father's first names which you should be able to get if you haven't already at the General Registry Office in Dublin www.groireland.ie (any bmd's after 1864)

I have a CD of Civil Registrations 1864-1875 but some go as far 1892. The Bruen Family Estate of Oak Park 1775-1957 is now a Park owned by the County. Oak Park (Painestown) is near Carlow Town. 3 km n.w.

In the 1911 Census there is a John Jacob 58 who is a Games Keeper but his wife's name is Kate, 44, married 24 years. Two girls named Mary one middle name Jane age 6 and the other age 15 looks like the middle name starts with an A, but not sure. Kate had 9 children born living and 9 surviving, although there is only 5 listed.

The Bruen Estate records should be archived somewhere in Ireland, possibily the National Archives in Dublin, also some Estate records are at the PRONI in Belfast.Local libraries can be good resources also with estate records in 'local studies'.

You can also write to the Carlow County Museum to the Museum Curator dmulligan@carlowcoco.ie and perhaps be given some ideas for genealogy sources and where what records are there and where.

Annette Code
'genealogy for fun'

Have you tried an advertisement in a Northern Ireland newspaper. You never know. I thought perhaps the family might be in the records from www.familysearch.org's new PILOT as they have records to the 1950's but no luck there.
I was hoping for a son. You could try the Republic of Ireland's phone book: www.eircomphonebook.ie but you need to check each county separately. If you know someone who has facebook or one of the new techy things that maybe a way to ask around. AC
First off some good websites for searching in Ireland, I think you have done amazingly well already.

www.censusfinder.com United Kingdom+Ireland+ Co.Carlow
a great website is:
www.igp-web.com + Carlow this is one of the best with an amazing amount of research materials
www.familysearch.org and their new PILOT program found under 'search records' not much luck however, I started with the unusual names as that makes it easier to start.

HICKEY:
Francis Hickey died July-Sept 1881 age 70(b 1811)#101590 Vol.3, Pg. 241.Registration District Carlow.might not be the right one but worth checking.
Denis died Oct-Dec 1879 age 62 (b1817)RD Carlow #101589Vol 3 Pg 334
Mary 180 listings
Rose if your Rose didn't marry died Oct-Dec 1878 age 45 (1833) #101589 Vol.3 Pg. 328
Maurice 10, only one died 1908 but wrong birth year
Timothy 10 but none 1830.
Mary Moore 223 listings, don't forget her name would of been Hickey in the deaths.

KEEGAN:

Elizabeth 29 - no 1830
James Keegan 58 estimating 1800 as birth year
Mary Nolan 1,079 look for Mary Keegan for death
John 54
Mary 87
Ellen 13
Catherine 55
Dorothy Keeravan 0
Note when looking for marriages est.20-25 yr.and when you get a James Keegan and a Mary Nolan with the same film numbers you will have the correct ones. the knowledge you gain from a marriage record is his father and her father and you know that already. Birth, father and mothers name and maiden name. Death the person who registered the death.

Annette Code

Terrence,
Thank you for the info. Supposedly Michael my ggrandfather came over when he was about 4 yrs old. If all his sibs were baptised in Tullow he had to have come over later.
With not many Shannons in Carlow it probably is a good chance they were related. I wonder how long they had been in Carlow. Did they migrate from another area? The info I had was from my uncle who has since passed away. I will ask my cousin if she has any further info. I only knew about 2 sibs Elizabeth & Thomas.
I'm also looking for Cooneys/Galvin in Galway.
Will let you know if I'm able to find out any more information. I wish I had something for you. Thank you
Kimberly

Hi.
My husband is descended from Andrew Budds, son of thomas Budds and Catherine Treacy of Timahoe. Andrew (1804-1893)came to Australia in 1832 with his brother William (circa 1800 to 1848)who was probably born at Shradbally. I understand that it was their sister elizabeth who married Lewis Griffith.
I would love to know more about the Irish family. What was their connection to Richard Budds of Carlow, if any? Why did Andrew call both sons Richard? Why does William's grave state that he was the son of Richard?
Tricia hilder (Buninyong, Australia)

I know it was in the early 1960's.
Elizabeth

Archbolds Castlemore Tullow Carlow

Can anyone help me with the following or is there anyone out there that can relate to this information.

My Great Great Grand father, James Archbold was a Wexford man and he married a Wicklow woman Elizabeth Morgan.(James Father's name was William and Elizabeths (Bessie's) father was John). They married in Wicklow in 1876 in a place called three mile water near Kilbride. There they lived until about the mid 1880's, and had 3 children William, 1877, John 1880 (Died 1880), James 1881. From there they moved to Palmerstown in Dublin (that is the one near Naul, not the one near Clondalkin), and had two more children Elizabeth 1887 and John 1890. From Palmerstown they moved to Camolin where they had 1 child Catherine (kate) 1893. So from this time in 1893 and 1911 where they are mentioned in the census living at castlemore, they moved to Tullow.

My great-grandfather was John JACOB. He was born in 1856 in Ireland. He married Elizabeth Anne PIERCE in 1881. They had 12 children. Elizabeth and John were caretakers at the Oak Park Estate in County Carlow, Ireland before coming the the U.S. in the very early 1900's. He changed his last name to JACOBS here in the U.S. I know nothing more about John.

Does anyone have any information about this family?

Hi Kimberly
I have Michael Shannon son of Thomas Shannon and Anne Nolan from Ardattin baptism date 9th Aug 1864 and his following siblings Catherine Babtism 12/08/1862 Elizabeth Birth 1st of June 1867 however oddly enougth I have her baptism date as 28th May 1867. Marian (also written as Mary Anne) 10/02/1870 Baptism 22/02/1870 and Thomas born 04/06/1873 and baptism 10/06/1873. All baptised in Tullow

I am trying to trace my own Shannon line, the earliest in my line so far is William Shannon born 1836 who married Anne McEvoy, my Willam was a farmer from the Grange (or Grangeford) near Tullow I decend from his son William born 1875. There are only a few Shannon families in Carlow, so the possibility that they are all related is high.

Grangeford and Ardattin are only a few mile apart, so I am wondering if your Michael and my William are related, do you have anymore information on your Shannon's

Re: Wellwood Family

I have a William Hobbs born 1782, who emigrates to Quebec. I am not certain of the year. However, in the bytown.com site, I find a Wm. Hobbs who in 1820 asks for assistance (Ireland) to send for brother-in-law Robert Wellwood in Borrisokane, Tipperary, Ireland.

Wm. Hobbs belongs to the Hobbs I am researching. The above is telling me that one of his sister's must have married Robert Wellwood. Would I ever be interested in who that might be. Do you have any idea?

Of the Hobbs family Wm. represents as a sibling, I only have three children. Wm. Hobbs b.1782, Robert Hobbs b. 1790 and Margaret Hobbs born 1810. Margaret married an Armstrong, so I know she wouldn't be Robert's wife.

Also interesting that somewhere in my 4 to 5 years of research I came across a "Little" Family in the central provinces where the branches of Robert Hobbs traveled. Some of the Hobbss moved on down to the USA, into Minnesota and North Dakota, and then into Montana, where I come into the picture eventually. I would love to know the connections to the Little's.

Have you been able to find Robert Wellwood's wife? Thank you for any attention you can give me. ;-)
