Margaret J. (Haskett) Valenti
Margaret J. (Haskett) Valenti, 90, of Litchfield, died Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at Harborside Healthcare in Bedford.
She was born May 13, 1917, in Brooklyn, New York, daughter of the late George and Ellen (McGrath) Haskett, formerly of Ireland.
On July 8, 1950, she was married to Natale Valenti at St. Ann’s Church in Ossining, New York, where she was a member for many years. They were married for 48 years, until her husband’s passing in 1998. She was also predeceased by a grandson, Angelo Natale Valenti in 1990, as well as by three brothers, George, David, and Michael and one sister, Sister Mary Ellen Haskett.
A resident of Ossining for over 50 years, she earned her high school diploma through the Ossining Adult Education Program. She was an avid reader, a good speller, and had beautiful handwriting. A tireless worker, she held many different jobs. Prior to her marriage, she worked as a doctor’s assistant and housekeeper. Other jobs included making toys, hats, various clerical jobs including one at Reader’s Digest in Pleasantville, New York. She also earned her nurse’s aide certificate and worked in various nursing homes.
After retiring she volunteered at Veteran’s Hospital in Montrose, New York. She would help feed the patients and help with recreation. She enjoyed swimming and, while living in Ossining, often swam in the Hudson River by the Sparta docks.
Later in life, she moved to New Hampshire where she participated in the Alvirne Adult Day Program for Seniors. She made many friends there and was known for her friendly smile and beautiful singing voice. She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Litchfield where she was a member of the Ladies Guild.
She is survived by a son and a daughter-in-law, Angelo and Patricia Valenti of Litchfield, and a daughter; Margaret Mary Valenti of Litchfield.
A Funeral Mass was celebrated on March 10 in St. Ann’s Church, Ossining, New York with burial to follow in St. Augustine’s Cemetery, also in Ossining. Donations be made in Margaret’s loving memory to Alvirne Adult Day Program, 200 Derry Road, Hudson, NH 03051 or to the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater New Hampshire Chapter, 1 Bedford Farms Drive, Bedford, NH 03110. The Dumont-Sullivan Funeral Home in Hudson was in charge of arrangements.
