I am a descendant of the Canny family of Ballycasey, Co Clare. My records are fairly complete but can be rather flimsy in parts (researching from Australia is either very difficult or extraordinarily expensive if one wants to be precise!). Denis Joseph Canny (1840-1928) migrated to Australia in the 1880s and was my G-Grandfather; Matthew Canny(1810-1868) was my G-G-Grandfather; Denis Canny (1780-1850) my G-G-G-Grandfather; and John Canny (d 24 Dec 1784 at Ballycasey) was my G-G-G-G-Grandfather. John Canny married Mary Lyons (1747-1823) of Croom, Co Limerick on 5 Aug 1768.
That's as far back as my info goes, but I'd love to hear from anyone that can add to the story in any direction. Happy to share what I do have.
The Canny's occupied several grand houses in the general area of Ballycasey, including Clonmoney (near Hurler's Cross and now crumbling) and Deerpark (nearer to Sixmilebridge and derelict but still standing defiantly in a forgotten pasture).
