My 2nd Great Grandparents, JOHN and MARY McNAMARA HAYES, left Ireland around 1852 to emigrate to the US or Canada. At the time they had three children, Patrick (1844), Thomas (1846) and my Great Grandfather, John W. Hayes (1850). I believe they may have gone first to Canada and then crossed from Ontario to Detroit, where they are found in the 1860 census. Two children were born in Detroit, James (1857) and Bridget (1855). John's marriage license lists his birthplace as County Clare. He evidently traveled to Montana at age 15, where he died in 1895 at the age of 45. My grandmother, ALICE WINIFRED HAYES was 5 and her sister, MARY HAYES was 7. They were sent to live with John's brother, JAMES HAYES, in Detroit when their mother died 6 months later. I would be SO happy to hear from anyone who may find familiar elements in my story. Thanks...
