James and Mary were married in County Tipperary approx. 1837 to 1840. They had 3 children before emigrating from Carrick on Suir and they were Thomas, William and Margaret. I believe they emigrated approx. 1844-47. They may have had relatives in Cincinnati, OH, as they settled there for approx. 5 years before settling in Dubuque, IA. New Orleans may have been their first port of entry, but that is not clear. Their 4th child was born in New Orleans.

Peter ... are you still out there? My research since our last communication indicates that Mary E Campbell McBrearty's father was not Bernard (1851) but his brother James (born 1854). James and then his son John ran a saloon in Ashland until the 1920s, and John Campbell apparently died there while on a visit with his wife. Some of James and John's descendants still live in the area.

Reply or contact me at bclmnts1@comcast.net.

Hi There,
That is fantastic. It sounds very much like the same family. If so William and Hester had many more children, plus we have been to Ringarogy Island. I knew that a son Thomas had moved to Roscommon. I think we have a lot of information to share. Would you like to contact me at robyn_armstrong@ihug.co.nz please and we can make real progress.
cheers
Robyn

Dates appear the be similar and Kiltinin is close to Fethard, so it is possible there is a connection but not able to prove it. Where did you find the marriage of Mary Carroll?
Re: Lamb in Carnew Parish County Wexford early 1800's

I might be able to help you with this. I have the tenants from Montebower (sp) which I will have to look up. My husbands family was from Carnew in Wicklow. I have a large number of estate rents from the Coolattin Estate of Earl Fitzwilliam that extended into Wexford. I will look up what I have in the next day or two.

Currently there are few parish records on line, also I'm sure I never collected the name Lamb, unless married to someone I was looking for when going through records. I have spent 40 hours going through Parish records. I have an index of birth records for Wicklow and Wexford, there is only 1 Lawrence born 1795, and no James, a Jacobus 1793?
Perhaps another brother? The Wexford records for Lamb don't start till 1828. Do you know if Catholic or Protestant?

The Tithe records for Carnew are kept under Wexford at the National Archives, other records are in Wicklow.

I have a CD Irish Memorial Inscriptions by Brian Cantwell completed 1985. He recorded all readable gravestones in Wicklow and Wexford. There are only 5 of these. I cannot put on the message board due to rootsweb policies so you will need to contact me. codeannette@yahoo.ca

By the time of the Griffiths Valuations of 1853 there was only one Lamb in Motabower Townland, Carnew Parish, Barony of Gorey, Union of Shillelagh.

Motabower
2. Lawrence Lamb, leasing from Earl Fitzwilliam house, land 25 Acres 1 rood 5 perches (old english measurement)
3. Lawrence Lamb 38 Acres.3.31 house,office and land

Doyle is a very common name and difficult to research due to the numbers, there are 62 Judith Doyles born in Wicklow

www.censusfinder.com United Kingdom+Ireland+Wicklow has some resources

www.igp-web.com + Wicklow different counties, different information but look for the photo project under archives.

Annette Code
'genealogy for fun'

see www.bytown.net a Canadian website for 'extracts' from Coollattin Estate

We are looking for two Lamb brothers: Laurence and James, born between 1786 and 1790 in Mortbower (hamlet), Carnew Parish, Wexford Co., Ireland. Laurence and James married two Doyle sisters: Judith Ann and possibly Ann. James and Judith had 8 children between 1814 and 1835; Laurence and Ann had 2 children: Daniel and Mary between 1825 and 1831. James and Judith left Wexford, arriving in Ontario, Canada in about 1836 bringing with them the two children of Laurence and Ann. It is believed that Laurence and Ann may have died in Wexford. In addition, it is known that one daughter of James and Judith, Mary, married a John Kelly in Wexford in 1835/6 and Mary and John Kelly joined the migration to Canada.

Does anyone have any information on this family? Could someone in Wexford Co. look up the basic information for me or tell me where to go from here?

We are at a complete dead-end and any help would be greatly appreciated.

With regard,
Sharon and Jim McDonald

You need to definitely not only trace them back to a county of origin but the town/townland within that county. Vital records began in Ireland in 1864 so church parish records for your ancestors' birth location in Ireland are the primary source for their baptismal records if the baptismal records survive for their birthplaces. There are no surviving Ireland wide census records before 1901.

If I am looking for your or other birth or baptismal record in the US I need to know parents names, date of birth and birthplace in the US, eg. the town or village, county and state or addy in a city, county and state. It's the same in Ireland.

There are no records in Ireland about who emigrated, where they went or what happened to them after emigration.

The records to search in the US include:

Their civil and church marriage and death records, cemetery records, tombstones, wills and US Naturalisation records esp. the first papers or declaration of intent to become a US citizen.

Their children's civil and church birth/baptismal records and obituaries may include where their Irish born parent was born in Ireland.

If for example they were born in Co. Meath and were Roman Catholic, here's a link to the Roman Catholic parish maps in Co. Meath, click on each parish on the map to find out where the records can be searched.

http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/counties/rcmaps/me...

Eilis O'Hara

There are no Ireland wide census records surviving before 1901. Those from 1861 to 1891 were destroyed by the British Government -- the first two for confidentiality reasons it's believed, the latter two were used by the British Government for pulp during WWI.

Earlier census records before 1861 were largely destroyed in a fire at the Fourt Courts Building in Dublin during the Irish Civil War in 1922. Civil registration eg. vital records started in Ireland in 1864 for all with just Protestant marriages beginning in 1845.

You need to research the emigrant's civil and church records in the US and their children's to find specifically where they were born in Ireland, their parents names and their dates of birth. The US 1900 census includes month and year of birth. There's a list of the names of the towns and townlands in the 32 counties in Ireland at the Ireland Townland Database http://www.seanruad.com and pick any county of interest from the drop down menu.

The records to search in the US to find the town/townland, and county of birth, parents names and date of birth include the emigrant's civil and church marriage records, civil and church death records, obituary, cemetery record, tombstone, will and US Naturalisation reords esp. the first papers or declaration of intent which was more detailed than the final citizenship records.

Eilis O'Hara

I'm researching the Bartautas Howe family. Bartautas Howe b.abt 1817 Ireland wife Margaret b.abt 1817 Ireland (no maiden name) and children William F, and Hannah came to America in 1847 and Settled in the Village of MacEdon, Wayne county, New York, USA. The only information I have obtained comes from the US census forms, which only mention their Country of origin and no town, or village is mentioned. While researching the oldest son, William, I ran across military papers for William's Army service during the American Civil War. William F Howe served in the 160th New York Infantry Regiment from 13 July 1863 to 13 July 1868.
Attached is the name of the town/village William F Howe was born in. Does anyone know of this town/village? I think the scribe that wrote down the information wrote it like it sounded and that's where I need the expertise of local researchers. Any help would be most appreciated, also if anyone knows of this family I would be grateful. I can provide more words from the same document if needed. Again thanks in advance.
Sincerely, GAFoltz

Official records for protestants started 1845 and for catholics about nineteen years later. However, two fires - one accidental and the other deliberate by the Irish Government - virtually wiped out all the archives apart for a small quantity. Try the Latter Day Saints site www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp try also http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/ for interest.

Most lists and boards will not accept an attachment. I downloaded a FREE app called Printkey 200 from the 'net. This program will take a "picture" of an area you want to send, copy it to a word doc, then right click on the word doc and copy to a post. Works fine, easily done, clearly shown and so far has not been rejected by any list or post. It is NOT and attachment. Hopefully, the app is still out there on the 'net.
