Classification: Query
Hello Jonathan,

I’m not a descendant of the Stanley and Salter families, nor did I locate information about Stanleys and Salters currently residing in the Caherkirky area of County Cork, but I did find the maiden name for Mary Anne who married James Stanley. This information comes from three civil birth indexes for children of James and Mary Anne, which shows that Mary Anne’s maiden name was Rice.

The birth indexes were found at the Latter Day Saints (LDS) website at: https://www.familysearch.org/#form=advanced-records

The birth indexes are for William (1874); Eliza (1876); and Emily (1879). Only the 1879 index for Emily notes that her birth was recorded in Clonakilty, Cork, Ireland.

Each index is accompanied by an LDS microfilm number. The birth records of the children will be found in these microfilms, which you can order from your local Family History Center.

The LDS birth indexes are below:

The birth record for William can be found in LDS microfilm number 255919. The birth record for Eliza can be found in microfilm number 255967, while the birth record for Emily can be found in microfilm number 256042. The birth records of the children may contain additional information not found in the indexes above, such as the address of the parents when each child was born, as well as the father’s occupation.

Clonakilty, Cork, is about 9 miles from Caherkirky. You can see this on Google maps of Cork. Go to the following Google Map’s link to see the location of Caherkirky: http://tinyurl.com/8tr6bbp

Once at the map you’ll see the letter A pointing to Caherkirky. Zoom out a little to see the towns immediately surrounding Caherkirky. To the right of Caherkirky you’ll see the R588 secondary road. Follow this road down by panning the map upward, and you’ll come to Clonakilty, which is located near the junctions of the R588 and the N71 dual-carriageway.

Next, go to the left margin off the map, and you’ll see highlighted in blue, the word “Directions.” Click on Directions and a drop-down box will appear. Type in the townland of Clonakilty, and click on “Get Directions.” The map that downloads shows the route from Caherkirky at letter B, to Clonakilty at Letter A. The distance is shown to be 14.7 kilometers, which is a little over 9 miles. The travel time between the two towns along the selected route highlighted in a blueish-purple, is 18 minutes by car.

Next, go back up the map to Caherkitky at letter B. Left-click on the B to generate a “Street view” of Caherkirky. Click on the thumbnail photo of the townland to expand the image, and you’ll be able to travel down the narrow roads of Caherkirky. My Limerick and Tipperary cousins called these narrow roads, “Boreens.”

Next, I found what I believe are the individual marriage indexes for James Stanley and Mary Anne Rice at the LDS website. The indexes show the couple’s marriage recorded in the Bandon, County Cork Registration District in 1873. The indexes show the full marriage record for James and Mary Anne can be found in LDS microfilm number 101252:

If you do not want to order the three microfilms containing the births of the Stanley children, or order the microfilm in which the marriage of James Stanley and Mary Anne Rice can be found, you can order the birth and marriage records from the General Register Office (GRO) in Roscommon Town, County Roscommon.

For information about ordering birth, marriage, and death records from the GRO, and the fees involved, go to the GRO website at: http://www.groireland.ie/

I then located the family of James and Mary Anne Stanley in the 1901 census of Ireland, showing they were living in an address of house number 14, Caherkirky, Rossmore, Cork, Ireland. The census was found at the National Archives of Ireland website link at: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

The census shows that 55 year old James Stanley was a famer who belonged to the Church of Ireland, as did the rest of his family members. The census also shows that he could read and write and that he could speak Irish and English. His 54 year old wife Mary Anne was also born in County Cork, and could read and write, as well as speak Irish and English.

There are five children in the household with James and Mary Anne. All the children were born in County Cork. The children are 27 year old James; 17 year old Mary Anne; your 16 year old grandfather George; 12 year old Richard; and 10 year old Thomas:

I also found the Stanley family in the 1911 census living in the same address of house number 14, Caherkirky, Rossmore, County Cork.

The census shows that 68 year old James Stanley is a farmer born in County Cork. He and his family are listed as belonging to the Church of Ireland. James is shown to be able to read and write and speak English. His 67 year old wife Mary Anne was also born in County Cork, and could also read and write and speak English. The census further shows that James and Mary Anne were married for 38 years as of 1911, and that in that time they had 9 children, 9 of which were still alive.

The children in the household are 25 year old Mary Anne; your grandfather, 24 year old George; and 20 year old Thomas.

If you do not want to order the microfilms containing the births of Gladys Mary and your father, Robert Alfred Stanley, you can order their birth records from the GRO in Roscommon Town, County Roscommon.

I didn’t find the birth index for Margaret Stanley in County Cork, but did locate what I believe may be her birth index in Cornwall at the FreeBMD website at: http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

Indexes at FreeBMD record births, marriages, and deaths in England and Wales beginning in the September quarter of 1837, well into the 20th century.

The index for Margaret A. Stanley shows her birth recorded in the Liskeard (Cornwall) Registration District for the December quarter of 1922. The index shows her mother’s maiden name was Salter. Margaret’s birth record can be found in Volume 5c, Page 70 of the GRO registers:

Mother's Maiden Name: Salter

Registration District: Liskeard

You can order Margaret’s birth record from the GRO in Southport, Smedley Hydro, England. For information about ordering birth, marriage, and death certs from the GRO, and the fees involved, go to: https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp

Unlike the GRO in Ireland, you can order birth, marriage, and death records from the GRO in Southport, online.

The Liskeard Registration District recorded births, marriages, and deaths for several towns and parishes in Cornwall. To view a list of these towns and parishes, go to the GenUKI website link at: http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/liskeard.html

Margaret’s birth record will give you the name of the town where she was born.

THE SALTER FAMILY

In your communication to the Ancestry.com message board you had stated that Hester Ann Salter was from Gurteenroe, Cork. I found Hester A. Salter, as well as her parents and siblings in the 1901 census, which shows the family were living in an address of house number 3, Gurteenroe, Ballydehob, Cork.

The head of the family is 54 year old farmer Robert Salter, who was born in Cork, and who could read and write. His religious affiliation, and the religious affiliation of his family was Methodist. His wife is 46 year old Margaret, also born in Cork. She too could read and write.

Robert and Margaret had six children in the household with them, all attending school. These children are 17 year old Maggie; 15 year old William; 15 year old Mary; 12 year old Hester A.; 11 year old Robert; and 9 year old “Ursilla.”

By the 1911 census the Salter family can be found living in an address of house number 1, Rathruane, Coolagh, Cork.
The head of the household is 63 year old Robert Salter, a farmer born in County Cork. His religious affiliation and the religious affilation of his family is listed as Wesleyan Methodist. His wife is 58 year old Margaret, also born in Cork. The census shows that Robert and Margaret were married for 33 years as of 1911, and that in that time they had 9 children, of which all 9 were still alive.

Five of those children, all born in Cork, are in the household with them. These are 23 year old William; 23 year old May; 21 year old Hester Anne; 20 year old Robert; and 18 year old Ursula. Also in the household is Robert and Margaret’s granddaughter, 2 year old Edith E. Lambert, born in County Cork. Her religious affiliation is also Wesleyan Methodist:

Earlier the 1911 census had shown that Robert and Margaret Salter were married for 33 years. If the census is accurate, they would have been married circa 1878. With this information I looked for the LDS marriage indexes for a Robert Salter and a Margaret in Cork for the years 1875-1880, and found one possibility. The indexes show that the marriage of a Robert Salter and a Margaret Jagoe was recorded in the Dunmanway, County Cork, Registration District for the June quarter of 1878. The marriage record can be found in LDS microfilm number 101253, which you can order from the Family History Center. Or, you could order the marriage record from the GRO in Roscommon Town.

Next I looked for Hester Ann(e) Salter’s birth index at the LDS website, but could not identify a birth index for her. Based on her age of 12 in the 1901 census and 21 in the 1911 census, she would have been born circa 1889-1890.

I did find the LDS birth index for a Georgina Hester Salter, recorded in the Skibbereen, Cork Registration District in 1889, but I can’t be sure this is the daughter of Robert and Margaret Salter.

I did however find the LDS birth index for Ursula Salter. This index shows that Ursula’s birth was recorded in the Skull, Cork, Registration District for the December quarter of 1891. Her birth record can be found in LDS microfilm number
101063:

If you order the microfilm containing Ursula’s birth record, or if you alternately order her birth record from the GRO, see if her mother is Margaret Jagoe. If her mother is Margaret Jagoe, then you will have confirmed that her father Robert had married Margaret Jagoe as seen earlier in the 1878 LDS marriage index.

I hope that at least some of this information has been of interest.

Kind Regards Jonathan,
