Hi Linda

I'm not sure i'll be much help, but in my husbands family tree we've got his Great Grandfather Thomas Walsh born about 1880, we're not sure if he was born in Kerry or Cork, but all we've established is that his father was Thomas Walsh, mother Nora O Sullivan but it appears they weren't married at all, Thomas Walsh was living with his mother Nora O Sullivan in Kerry in 1901 and she's listed as single, he's listed as her Son, family story loosely points to that his father Thomas Walsh went to America, on thomas's death in 1956 the newspaper notice had "Copy to American Newspapers" in it......

The change in names between Birth and Marriage certs could be explained by being baptised one name but using another name which is quite common! but Thorpe to Fottrell might be explained by perhaps a second married for Margaret, have you found the marriage cert for William Walsh/Margaret Thorpe or Thomas Walsh/ Margaret Fottrell??
