My GGgrandmother was Mary Coogan. Family legend says that her parents married in Ireland (somewhere) and moved to Scotland. Mary was supposedly born in Dundee around 1855 (but I have searched the Scotland records online and haven't found one in Dundee). Mary's father was Patrick Coogan (according to Mary's death record). Supposedly Patrick died in Scotland in an explosion and Mary and her mother came to the US around 1870. They worked in the mills in Lewiston, ME. Mary got married to Brian Kelley in 1874 and had the following children: Mary, Frances Gertrude, Agnes, Margaret (Mammie) and Stephen.

I have no idea what ever happened to Mary's mother. I suspect she remarried.

So, do you know where the name Coogan originates from? County Cork. Most of the Irish immigrants in Lewiston came from County Cork, as opposed to the ones in Portland, Maine who came from County Galway.
