The Nugent farm in Libeen Dunbeacon was constructed by Daniel Nugent (1876-1947) and his father, Jeramiah Nugent (?1833-1913). The farmhouse was built of stone and the structure was originally covered with a white stucco. It has a slate roof. There is a work shop and a barn on the property. The barn has been converted to a guest house. A well on the property has been filled in. Daniel installed slate roofs on several of the neighbor's farmhouses. He was known to them a "long Dan." Produce and livestock from the farm was taken to Ballydehob where they were sold for transport to England. Daniel lived in the house with his wife, Ann Menihane (?1878-1964) where they raised their 12 children: Mary, born about 1903; Jerimiah (Jerry), born about 1907; Patrick, born about 1908; Ann, born 1910; Nellie, born about 1911 and died at age 15; Margaret (Maggie), born about 1912; Beatrice (Bea), born about 1915; Catherine, born about 1913 and died at age 10; Nora, born about 1914; John, born about 1913 and died at age 13; Patricia, born about 1920 and died at age 19; and Daniel, born about 1920 and died at age 13. Daniel Nugent's mother, Catherine Sullivan Nugent (1847-1917), lived in the house after her husband, Jeramiah Nugent, died in 1913. When Ann Menihane Nugent died in 1964, the farm passed to her son, Patrick. Patrick never married. When he died in 1983, the farm was left to a niece who has helped care for him in his later years. I believe this niece may have been one of Maggie's daughters. The farm was then divided and land sold by the niece. The farmhouse was sold to the Dutch couple, Ad and Manja Marrhysse. I hope you will find this helpful. E.B.
