James GIBSON married in Ontario in 1870 and stated that he had been born in Armagh in Ireland. This is the only specific location in Ireland that I have found for any members of his immediate family.
Based on the Canadian census and other records, the following appears to have taken place in Armagh, though there is a possibility (see below) of Down.
c 1803 - Christopher GIBSON born
c 1805-1806 - Elizabeth GRAY born
c 1833-1834 - Christopher & Elizabeth marry
c 1834-1835 - daughter Ellen is born
1835-1837 - due to the gap btw Ellen & Thomas, I suspect a birth of one (or two) who did not survive long enough for the 1851 Canada census
c 1837-1838 - son Thomas is born
c 1839-1840 - son James is born in Armagh
c 1840-1842 - they emigrate to Pickering Twp, Ontario, Canada
In the 1851 Canada census, the family (then headed by Thomas JOHNSTON who had married the widowed Elizabeth) is next to the family of John GIBSON. It seems very likely that John was the brother of Christopher. This is because John named one son (born c 1856) Christopher and one daughter (born c 1854) Elizabeth.
So John and Christoper GIBSON were almost certainly related, either as brothers or close cousins. John was apparently the younger of the two by some 7 years or so.
The only information that I have found so far on the location in Ireland of John is the 1929 Ontario death record of his son Christopher, in which Christopher's daughter states that John and his wife were both born in County Down. The timeline for John's family in Ireland is as follows:
May 1811 - John GIBSON born, supposedly in County Down
c 1815-1816 - Margaret SPROUT born, supposedly in County Down
c 1835 - John and Margaret marry
c 1836-1837 - daughter Jane born
c 1838-1839 - son John born
c 1840-1841 - daughter Margaret born
c 1841-1842 - they emigrate to Pickering Twp, Ontario, Canada
I would very much like to hear from anyone who fits these lines.
I would also like to know of any possible records that might have survived in Ireland that would show any of them.
