Hello:
I was somewhat surprised as well, given areas where KEENAN surname was most frequent...it may have something to do with my gr-gr-gr grandmother; Sarah Jane McQUOID; b. 1819;IRL. From what I have found, McQUOID's were almost exclusively Presbyterian. I have found KEENAN's in these areas but I have yet to establish the line. Interestingly enough, UHF found a baptizmal certificate for my gr-gr grandfather; John Keenan;baptized in Kircubbin, Co.Down in 1835. In addition, I found that the family attended RC church in Maryport, Cumberland, ENG after they immigrated in about 1845.
If you can shed any light on how to establish the KEENAN line in Down, I would greatly appreciate it.
Best regards,
Chuck KEENAN

*******I am interested that Keenan is present in County Down. It is generally a County Fermanagh name. Also, its
Donaghadee, not Donaghadie. Donaghadee, Kircubbin(Ards Peninsula), and Newtownards(pronounced 'Newtonards') are
almost wholly Presbyterian & is very Scottish in character.

********I was going to suggest the Ulster Historical Foundation, but see that you have already employed their
services. Maybe you could try a deeper search, provided
you're willing to pay the extra fee. Or, try the Mormon website on the Net. They've got many records on the ancestors of many American & Canadian families. I've
had success with this site. I discovered recently that one of my ancestors(Samuel Philpot) was of the Cherryvalley, Belfast, County Down area and not of the Hillsborough/Annahilt area as I'd thought when I was in County Down, Northern Ireland this past summer. Otherwise, just keep searching the Web & the local records & graveyards where you live-- you may be surprised
what you uncover!!

Hello:
Just a reminder, I am looking for info on my KEENAN/McQUOID families from Co.Down.
My gr-gr grandfather; John KEENAN, was baptized in Kircubbin, Co.Down in 1835. His parents, Felix and Sarah (McQUOID) KEENAN;b. 1814/1819;IRL later migrated to the Cumberland area of England about 1845. Any one with info regarding these families please drop me a line.
Best regards,
Chuck KEENAN

My grandfather was John Joseph McCartan of County Down - born there c. 1868-1870; his mother's name may have been Sarah Keenan.

My grandfather was very vague about where in Down he came from - perhaps Newry, or Downpatrick - but I've found birth records (likely for him) that list his parents as Arthur and Sarah (Keenan) McCartan of Saul parish.

He emmigrated to the US in 1892, and settled in western Pennsylvania (Pittsburgh and area). He had two siblings (that we know of) Mary and Peter, who settled in Philly. All, we think, came through New York.

All we know of the family in Down is that the grandparents (McCartans and/or
Keenans) had a farm where my grandfather and the other siblings lived; their parents lived in the "city."

I've visited bulletin boards for the McCartans - they mostly lived (and still do) in Down and there apparently were a lot of them in Newtownards. So there seems to be a natural Keenan-McCartan connection.
