Purcell - Shaw
Looking for ANY information concerning William Purcell (parents unknown) married to Kate (Katreen) Shaw (parents unknown) in Dublin c. 1860/1862.
William Purcell, born. c. 1807/1817, possibly in co Laois or Carlow served for 20 years in the British army with the 61th Foot regiment (saw action during the Second Sikh war) at Multan, Goodjerat and Chillianwalla). He was discharged in 1856 and after his marriage, came to Canada, with his wife, as an active army pensionner, at the time of the Trent Affair (1861/62). Was "keeper" of Fort Ingall (Temiscouata county, Quebec) from 1862 to c. 1868; later served as "barrack sergeant" in the Canadian School of Infantry, Fredericton, NB, from 1883 to his death, July 20, 1889.
Kate Shaw died in 1878, age 36; said to have been a Protestant girl from a well-to-do Dublin family who married the much older, Catholic Purcell against her family will.
They had nine children born between 1863 and 1876, all baptised in the catholic parish of Notre-Dame-du-Lac, Temiscouata county, Quebec.
