Hello Barbara,
I’m not a descendant of the Gough and related families but I located information that may pertain to them in Ireland, as well as in England, with other source information showing a connection to Guyana, South America.
The first record I uncovered was the baptism for a James John Gough, son of James John and Theresa Annie Gough. The younger James was baptized in the St. James Church of Ireland on 26 February 1899. The record shows he was born on 5 February 1899. His father James’s occupation is “Draughts Man.” At the time of the baptism the Gough family were living in an address of 5 St. John’s Gardens, Island Bridge, Dublin.
In your query to the Ancestry.com message boards, you had stated that your father and grandfather shared the same name-John James Gough. But in these records the first and middle names are reversed to James John. Have you seen this reverse before when researching your genealogy?
The baptism transcription below for James John Gough was found at the Irish Genealogy website at:
http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/index.htmlThe record follows:

Unfortunately, the St. James Church of Ireland, located in James Street, Dublin, is closed to the public, as is the church cemetery, according to an article found in a Wikipedia link at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._James'_Church_and_Cemet...An enlarged photo of the church can be found at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:St._James%27_Church_and_Ce...This would be the church in Dublin where your dad was baptized in 1899.
A GoogleMap of St. James Street, Dublin, can be found at:
http://tinyurl.com/6e6kwgaNext I located the civil birth index for James John Gough at the new Latter Day Saints (LDS) website, showing that the birth was recorded in the Dublin South Registration District for the March quarter of 1899. His birth record can be found in Volume 2, Page 569 of the GRO registers.

The above is only an index. The full birth record for James John Gough is held by the General Register Office (GRO) in Roscommon Town, County Roscommon. For information, costs, and an application form to order the record, go to the GRO website at:
http://www.groireland.ie/The full birth certificate will provide information such as the parents’ names, father’s occupation, address of the family, etc. It will contain much of the same information found in the baptism record for James John Gough.
Also Barbara, I found a death record at the LDS website for John James Gough recorded in British Columbia on 4 January 1979. I believe this death record may pertain to your dad. The record shows he was born in Dublin on 5 February 1899, which is the same date of birth given in the baptism record from the Irish Genealogy website seen just above.
The death record also shows that John James’s mother was Theresa Clancy, rather than Theresa McGrath. His father’s name is not listed in the index. I’m a little confused by this record, as in your message to Ancestry.com, you had stated that Theresa’s last name was McGrath. Did Theresa’s husband John James/James John Gough die before her, and if so, have you found any information that she married a second time to a fellow named McGrath?

In searching the LDS indexes for marriages in Dublin, I came across two indexes which may pertain to your grandfather and grandmother, though the index for Theresa spells her last name as Clasby, rather than Clancy. This indicates that the person who reported John James Gough’s death in New Brunswick either thought that John’s mother’s maiden name was Clancy, or that the person who wrote down the details of the death, heard the name wrong and spelled Theresa’s surname as Clancy.
The indexes for both James John Gough and Annie Theresa Clasby show their respective marriages were recorded in the Dublin South Registration District for the June quarter of 1894, and can be found in Volume 2, Page 576 of the General Register Office records.
The indexes, from the LDS website, follow:

You can order the full marriage record for James John Gough and Theresa Clasby from the GRO in Roscommon Town.
I then wanted to see if I could find any records at the Irish Genealogy website that mention John James Gough or James John Gough, and Theresa Claby or Annie Clasby or a combination of their first and middle names. The search proved successful in that I found the baptism record for Catherine Gough, who was baptized in the Clondalkin, Dublin, Catholic Church in 1895. Her year of birth is given as 1894. No day or month of birth or baptism are given in the record. Her parents are listed as James Gough and Annie Clasby, who were living in an address of “Grange” at the time of Catherine’s baptism. This Catherine may be your Kats, that is, your dad’s sister and your aunt:

The Catholic Church in Clondalkin is called the Church of the Immaculate Conception and St. Killian .
Information about the church can be found at:
http://www.clondalkin.dublindiocese.ie/history.htmThe following is the 1901 census transcription for the family of James and Annie Gough, living in an address of 2 Valleymount, Ushers Quay, Dublin. James is shown to be a 26 year old draughtsman. His place of birth is almost impossible to read, but based on information from the 1911 census, which you’ll see a little later, he was born in Demerara. Demerara is located in the South American country of Guyana, which is bordered on the north by the Caribbean Sea. At the time this section of the world was called the “West Indies.”
James’s wife is 24 year old Annie Gough, born County Cavan. The children in the household are 6 year old Kathleen, born Dublin City; and 2 year old Jack, also born in Dublin City. Jack may be your father. The census doesn’t report any physical disabilities for Kathleen.
Also in the household is a boarder, 29 year old draughtsman, William Sheffield, born Dublin City. The census transcription below is from the National Archives of Ireland website at:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/Please see below:

The 1901 census above shows the Gough household as a mixed-religious family, with James listed as Catholic, Annie as Church of Ireland, Kathleen as Catholic, and Jack as Church of Ireland.
A copy of the original 1901 census for the Gough family can be found at the National Archives website link at:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai003720961/In researching your genealogy or in talking with family members, had you come across information that your grandfather Gough was born in South America, Guyana, or the West Indies?
For more information about Demerara, go to the Wikipedia link at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DemeraraNext I located the family of James and Annie Gough in the 1911 census living in 59 Whitworth Road, Drumcondra, Glasnevin, Dublin. James is shown to be a 38 year old surveyor, born in Demerara. His wife is 33 year old “Annis.” born in County Cavan. The person who transcribed the census mistook the lower case “e” in her name, for an “s.” You’ll see this is understandable when you access a copy of the original census.
Getting back to Annie, the census shows that she and James have been married for 16 years, and that of the two children she had, both were still living as of 1911. Being married for 16 years in 1911, means she and James were married circa 1895. The indexes for the marriage of James and Annie Theresa seen earlier, show they were married in 1894.
Also in the household in the 1911 census is 12 year old John Gough, born Dublin City. Kathleen, or Kats, is not in the household. But, two cousins are. These are 38 year old “Minnis” (Minnie) McGrath, born in Waterford City. Her occupation is, “Principal Girl's Model School.” She is not married. The other resident in the Gough household is 25 year old Gertrude McGrath, also born Waterford City. She too is single. The relationships of people in a household are to the head of the household, in this case, James Gough, which indicates that Minnie and Gertrude McGrath were related to James rather than to Annie. But, I’m not sure if that’s the case in this instance.
Unlike the 1901 census, all the family members in the Gough Household in the 1911 census are shown to be Roman Catholic.

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000039161/Next I located what I believe is James and Annie’s daughter, Kathleen, in the 1911 census, attending St. Mary’s Female Training School, Stanhope Street, Arran Quay, Dublin. She is shown to be a pupil in the school. She is not shown to have any physical disabilities. Her age in the census is 20, though her actual age would be between 16 and 17, based on her age in the 1894 Clondalkin Catholic Church baptism record seen earlier. Ages of people in these old census returns are not always accurate.
Barbara, do you know if Kats had attended a school named St. Mary’s in Dublin?
The census transcription follows. You’ll see dozens of students enumerated. I’ve separated the enumeration for Kathleen Gough, so that she is easily recognizable a quarter way down the list. I’ve included all the students in the transcription below, as some of them may have been Kathleen’s friends.

A copy of the original 1911 census for St. Mary’s Female School can be found at the National Archives link at:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000098364/You won’t find the whole census at the above link, as I believe it covers more than one page. The enumeration for Kathleen won’t be seen in the copy that downloads, but if you enlarge the census, you’ll see the school’s name in the heading listed as, “Female Training School of St Mary.”
Information about St. Mary’s school can be found at:
http://www.stanhopestreetprimary.ie/files/history_of_our_sch... If you recall, both the 1901 and 1911 census enumerations reveal that Annie Gough was born in County Cavan. Her age in each census places her year of birth circa 1877. With this information I went to the Irish Family History Foundation (IFHF) website to see if I could find the baptism or birth record for a Theresa Annie Clasby or an Annie Theresa Clasby. The IFHF website can be found at:
https://rootsireland.ie/ifhf/login.php?fromHome=1Searching birth/baptism, marriage, and death/burial indexes at the IFHF website is free. To gain access to full transcriptions of the records, you first have to pay 5 Euros by credit card. Once payment is made, the transcription of the record (not a copy of the original), is downloaded to your computer. The indexes give very basic information, such as the name of the person and the year of the person’s birth, baptism, marriage, and burial or death.
Concerning birth and baptism indexes the IFHF website does not provide you with the names of the parents of a child.
I found the civil birth index for Annie Theresa Clasby at the IFHF website, showing that her birth was recorded in the Cootehill, Cavan, Registration District for the year 1877. The index below was found at the IFHF’s advanced search function.
The index follows:
1 match for the search criteria: Clasby (plus variants) Annie Theresa 1877 Parish: COOTEHILL (RD)

The initials RD following the Parish/District location Cootehill, stand for Registration District, meaning the index pertains to a civil record of birth, rather than a church baptism.
I had some credits left over from previous searches at the IFHF, and decided to download the birth record transcription for Annie. The transcription shows she was born on 20 October 1877, and that her parents were John William Clasby and Mary Shore, living in an address of Market Street, Cootehill, County Cavan. John’s occupation is “Corporal Royal Engineer,” meaning he was in the British Army. William is also listed as the informant of the birth to the local registrar.

I looked for the marriage index for John William Clasby and Mary Shore in the IFHF indexes, but didn’t find it. I also looked for their marriage in England, at the FreeBMD wesbite, but again found nothing. It’s possible they were married in Ireland and that their marriage hasn’t been transcribed yet, or that I missed the index of their marriage at the IFHF website. It’s also possible they were married overseas.
From the above birth record, I believe that John William Clasby and Mary Shore were your great grandparents on your dad’s mother’s side of the family.
Cootehill is located in north central County Cavan, on the border with County Monaghan. A GoogleMap of Cootehill can be viewed at:

http://irishhistoricalpics.ie/ihpc/Main/Enquiry.asp?iPicture...A description of Cootehill, Cavan, from the 1837 edition of Lewis’s Topographical Dictionary of Ireland, follows:
COOTEHILL, a market and post-town, in the parish of DRUMGOON, barony of TULLAGHGARVEY, county of CAVAN, and province of ULSTER, 12 miles (N. E.) from Cavan, and 57 (N. W. by W.) from Dublin; containing 2239 inhabitants. This town is situated on the road from Kingscourt to Clones, and consists of four wide streets, containing 438 houses, nearly all of which are slated. It is on the borders of a lake, which is navigable for the greater part of the distance of seven miles between this place and Ballybay, in Monaghan; and is a considerable market for linen. The webs are principally broad sheetings of superior quality, and the number of pieces sold annually to be bleached is about 40,000. The trade, which had considerably declined, has for the last two or three years been improving. The general market is on Friday, and the corn market on Saturday, in the market-house.
Fairs are held on the second Friday in each month for cattle, flax, and yarn. Here is a chief constabulary police station. Petty sessions are held every Wednesday, and quarter sessions at Easter and in October in a very neat sessions-house. The bridewell contains three cells, with separate day-rooms and yards for males and females, and apartments for the keeper. The seats in the neighbourhood are very beautiful, especially Bellamont Forest, the residence of C. Coote, Esq., which derived its name from the title of Earl of Bellamont enjoyed, until the year 1800, by the ancient family of Coote. The house is of brick, two stories high, with a noble Doric portico of stone, and the rooms of the lower story are strikingly grand; it contains some fine paintings, among which is the death of Dido, by Guercino, also full-length portraits of the late Earl and Countess of Bellamont by Sir Joshua Reynolds, the former in the full costume of a Knight of the Bath, a fine painting in excellent preservation.
The demesne comprises above 1000 plantation acres, of which nearly one-half is occupied with woods; it includes several lakes and a spa, and commands beautiful views from Dismond Hill and its several eminences. The other principal seats are Ashfield Lodge, the residence of H. J. Clements, Esq.; Annilea, of M. Murphy, Esq.; Bellgreen, of T. Brunker, Esq.; and Rakenny, of T. L. Clements, Esq. The town contains the parish church, a R. C. chapel, and two places of worship for Presbyterians, one for the Society of Friends, one for Moravians, and one for Wesleyan Methodists. There are three schools, including an infants' school, also a Sunday school in the old church and at each of the Presbyterian chapels, a dispensary, and a Ladies' Society for selling blankets and clothing at half-price. In an ancient fort at Rakenny a considerable quantity of gold, with a large golden fibula, was found in an iron pot.—See DRUMGOON.

ENGLISH RECORDS
From the information found about James Gough in his 1899 baptism record as well as in the 1901 and 1911 Irish census returns for the Gough family noting that the older James was born in Demerara, I wondered if James’s father had been in the British Military, or had worked for the British government in some capacity, as his son was born far away from home, in South America.
In the 1901 census the older James Gough’s age is 29. The 1911 census shows he is 38. This places his year of birth circa 1872-1873. Thinking perhaps that James’s father was born in England, rather than Ireland, I accessed the 1881 England census at the Latter Day Saints (LDS) census search engine at:
# HYPERLINK "
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?P...I believe I located James and his father, also named James, and mother Elizabeth Gough in the 1881 census, living in the household of 27 year old “Issiah” Gough, in an address of 33 Ireton Street, London. The older James Gough is shown to be a 39 year old Book Binder, born in Bethnal Green, London, Middlesex. He is Issiah’s brother. His 32 year old wife Elizabeth was born in Ireland. Their 8 year old son James J. Gough is shown to have been born in Cameroon, British Guiana, West Indies. Of course, Cameroon is in West Africa, not in South America, and so I knew something was not right with the census or the transcription of the census. Perhaps the error was in the transcription made by the LDS researcher.
The name “Issiah,” didn’t look right either. I’ll have more on his name a little later.
Issiah is shown to be a 27 year old cellarman, born in Bethnal Green (London). His 25 year old wife Eliza was born in St. George’s East, London. Their son is 1 year old James W. Gough, was born in Bromley, Middlesex.

I accessed a copy of the original 1881 census at the Ancestry.com website, enlarged it, and found that Issiah’s name is actually Josiah, the same name as his son. I also found that the transcription for the place of birth (Cameroon) for James J. Gough is also incorrect. The actual place of birth is written as “bemerara” British Guine (British Subject) W.I.
The location “bemerara,” no doubt refers to Demerara, Guyana, South America. If you access these old census returns you can see that it is understandable why errors of transcription are made, if the census isn’t enlarged and gone over with more than a glance.
I made my own transcription of the 1881 census for the Gough family, noting the corrections:

Noticing that James W. Gough was 39 and his wife Elizabeth was 32, I figured they were probably married for quite a few years by the year 1881. Before looking for their marriage, I wanted to see if I could find them in any previous census enumerations. But, I also wanted to see if I could initially find the marriage of Josiah Gough and Eliza first, as they appear not to have been married as long as James and Elizabeth.
I believe I found the church marriage record of Josiah Gough at Ancestry.com’s, “London, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1921.” The marriage record shows that he and Eliza Gaymer were married in the St John the Evangelist Church of England, Parish of St. George’s East, London, on 9 June 1878. Josiah’s occupation is cellar man. His age is 24. His father’s name is James Gough, whose occupation appears to read “Revenue Officer.” This means that James W. Gough’s father was also James, the revenue officer.
At the time of his marriage Josiah was living in 53 Richard Street.
Eliza Gaymer was 21 years old when she married. She too was living in 53 Richard Street when she married. Her father is listed as George Gaymer, whose occupation is carman. The clergyman who married the couple was J. M. Vaughan. The witnesses to the marriage were Benjamin George Gaymer, and Jane Johns.
A transcription from a copy of the original marriage record follows:

Next I looked for James and Elizabeth Gough in the 1871 census and found them. Their son James is not in this census, as he wasn’t born yet. The census shows the Gough family living in Aldershot, Hampshire.
James is shown to be 29 years old and born in Westminster, London. The 1881 census, on the other hand, gave his birthplace as Bethnal Green. The census further shows that James is a sergeant in the 53rd Regiment of Foot, which is a regiment in the British Army. It was likely that while he was in the army that he traveled to Demerara with Elizabeth, where their son James was born. The index to this census gives James’s regiment as the 33rd Regiment of Foot. But in a copy of the original, it can be seen clearly that he was in the 53rd Regiment of Foot. I’ve corrected the transcription error.
Elizabeth is shown to be 23 years old and born in Waterford, Ireland. The 1911 Ireland census for James and Annie Gough had shown that Minnie and Gertrude McGrath were born in Waterford City, County Waterford, Ireland. The 1871 English census for Elizabeth Gough however, doesn’t specify if she had been born in County Waterford or Waterford City. But I still wonder if there is some type of connection there between her and Minnie and Gertrude McGrath.
Also in the household in the 1871 census is James and Elizabeth’s daughter, 5 year old Mary Ann. She was born at sea. She would have been born circa 1865-1866, perhaps when he family was on their was to South America.
Residing in the household with the Gough family in the 1871 census is a visitor, 21 year old Mary Jane Quain, born Bristol Somerset.

I can’t be positive that the James Gough and Elizabeth Mary Ann Howard in the GRO marriage index above, are your great grandparents. But, it’s possible they may be. Have you heard any family stories which mention a Howard in your genealogy?
I then looked for James Gough in the 1861 census and found him. He is listed as James W. Gough, an 18 year old soldier, with a rank of private, born in London. The census shows he is residing in a barracks located in Chichester, Sussex, with several other soldiers. One of these soldiers is 20 year old William Gough, who was born in Shropshire. The surnames in the enumeration are listed alphabetically, which means that William Gough may not have been related to James W. Gough.

I then found the people I believe to be James W. Gough’s family in the 1861 census. These are 51 year old laundress, Ann Gough, born Wiltshire, though I couldn’t decipher the name of the town or parish of her birth in a copy of the census. Also in the household is Ann’s daughter, 10 year old Elizabeth, born Bethnal Green, and Ann’s son, 7 year old Josiah Gough, born Mile End, London. The family are living in an address of 35 Baker Street, London, parish of Stepney St Dunstan. Josiah Gough would be the same Josiah seen earlier in the 1881 census:

I then wanted to see if I could find the Gough family in the 1851 census, with the thought that this enumeration may list James’s parents and siblings all together, with the exception of Josiah, who was born after 1851. I located the Gough family living in an address of Essex Street, Bethnal Green, London. The head of the household is 29 year old James Gough, who worked as the superintended of the customs, though I couldn’t make out his full occupation. He was born in Hindon, Wiltshire. His wife is 40 year old Ann, also shown to be born in Hindon. I believe that James and Ann are your great great grandparents. Their children include 18 year old Sarah, a dress maker born in Hindon, Wiltshire; 13 year old John; 11 year old Jane; 8 year old James (your great grandfather, I believe); 5 year old Mary Ann; and 3 month old Elizabeth. All the children, except for Sarah, were born in Bethnal Green:

As noted in the 1861 census, seen earlier, Ann is listed as a widow, meaning that James Gough had died between the 1851 and 1861 census enumerations. James is shown to be 25 years old and working in the revenue office. He was born out of the county, that is, out of Middlesex. His 30 year old wife Ann was also born out of the county. I then looked for as many baptism and birth indexes for the children of James and Ann Gough as I could find at the Ancestry.com, and FreeBMD websites. I located several baptism and birth indexes for these children, including James William Gough. The baptisms, unlike the birth indexes, also include each child’s exact date of birth.
The first record below is for the baptism of John Gough. He was baptized in the Church of England Parish of St. Matthew, Bethnal Green, on 5 November 1837. He was born on 5 October 1837. His parents are listed as James and Ann Gough. The address of the family is Selby Street. James’s occupation is bricklayer. This shows that between the year 1837 and the 1841 census, James has changed professions, which makes you wonder how he went from a bricklayer to a revenue/custom’s official, eventually to become a superintendent in the customs department as shown in the 1851 census.
The clergyman who baptized John Gough was J. Mayne, the curate of the church:

I was especially hoping to find the baptism and GRO birth index for James William Gough, as I believe he would be your great grandfather, whose own son James was born in Demerara, Guyana.
The search for James William was positive, as I uncovered both his baptism and GRO birth index.
Like his two older siblings noted above, James was baptized in St. Matthew‘s. His baptism took place on 25 September 1842. He was born on 30 August 1842. He and his parents James and Ann were living in Essex Street at the time of the baptism. If you go back to the 1851 census shown earlier, you’ll see the family residence at the time was also Essex Street. The occupation of the older James Gough in the baptism record is Revenue Officer. Barbara, any one of the birth records from the GRO for the children of James and Ann Gough, should provide you with Ann’s maiden name.
As far as records show, James and Ann’s oldest child was Sarah. The 1851 census shows that Sarah was born in Hindon, Wiltshire, where her parents were also born. In that census her age is listed as 18, placing her year of birth circa 1833. There won’t be a birth record for Sarah, as civil registration of births, marriages, and death in England didn’t commence until the year 1837.
I looked for Sarah’s baptism at the Latter Day Saints (LDS) new website search engine at:

Sarah’s baptism record can be found in LDS microfilm number 1279339. This film can be ordered from your local Family History Center. The film includes Hindon baptism, marriage and burial records for 1599-13; baptism and burial records for 1733-1736; baptisms for 1813-1886, and burials in Hindon for 1813-1845.
If James and Ann were married in Hindon, their marriage would not be included in this microfilm, as the film doesn’t include marriages past the year 1813. If there is no marriage record for James and Ann, the birth records for their children may be the only documents that give Ann’s maiden name.
I next found an index at the LDS website for the baptism of a James Gough in Hindon. This may refer to the baptism of your great great grandfather, the future customs/revenue officer. I then found the LDS baptism records for four more children of John and Ann Gough in Hindon, Wiltshire. Two of these baptisms are for Ann Gough, one baptized in 1810, the other in 1819. This indicates the older Ann Gough had died young, and that John and Ann had named another daughter Ann in 1819. The other two children in the baptism records are William and Jane. If the Gough family belonged to the Church of England, the children would have likely been baptized in what was known as “Free Chapel,“ now called St. John the Baptist.
I looked for but didn’t find a church marriage record for John Gough and Ann in Hindon, Wiltshire. They may have been married in another town in Wiltshire, or perhaps even another county.
A description of Hindon, Wiltshire, from the 1848 edition of Lewis’s Topographical Dictionary of England, is below:
HINDON, a market-town and parochial chapelry, and formerly a representative borough, in the union of Tisbury, hundred of Downton, Hindon and S. divisions of Wilts, 15 miles (W. by N.) from Salisbury, and 96 (W. S. W.) from London; containing 772 inhabitants. This small town is situated on the slope of one of the Wiltshire downs, about two miles from the ruins of Fonthill Abbey, and consists principally of one street, extending along the great western road from London to Exeter: a considerable part was consumed by fire in 1754. The manufacture of silk twist, for which Hindon was formerly noted, is extinct, but that of linen, dowlas, and bed-ticking, is carried on in the vicinity; and at the head of the Fonthill river, about a mile and a half distant, is a large establishment for the manufacture of broad-cloth and kerseymere. The market, on Thursday, was considerable for corn; but it has declined since the great fire, and the establishment of a corn-market at Warminster. There are fairs on the 9th of May, for cattle and sheep, and on Oct. 29th, for horses, cattle, poultry, &c.; a fair is also held at Berwick Hill, about a mile from the town, on November 6th, for horses and sheep. In the 7th of Richard II., a precept was directed to this borough to send burgesses to parliament, but no return was made: it first sent representatives in the 27th of Henry VI., from which period the members were regularly chosen until the 2nd of William IV., when it was disfranchised. The petty-sessions for the Hindon division are held here on the first Wednesday in every month. The chapelry comprises by computation 196 acres: the soil is chalky, and that portion under cultivation is fertile and productive. The living is a donative, in the patronage of the Crown; net income, £75; appropriator, the Rector of Knoyle. The chapel, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, is a plain oblong building, having a small south transept; it was originally erected in 1556, and much improved in 1836, at which time it was enlarged with 126 sittings. It is under the temporal jurisdiction of eight governors, incorporated by letters-patent of George III. There is a place of worship for Primitive Methodists. In the vicinity of the town, towards the north-west, and near the Roman road which leads to Old Sarum, are Stockton Works, occupying an area of 62 acres, and supposed to be the remains of an ancient British settlement.

I located a record for the person I believe to be your father Jack at Ancestry.com’s “Border Crossings: From U.S. to Canada, 1908-1935.” The record shows he arrived in the Port of Vancouver, B.C. on 30 June 1926. The record doesn’t say whether he arrived in Canada by land or sea, but his occupation is listed as “seaman.” He is shown to be 26 years old, a Catholic, and born in Dublin, Ireland. His address is listed as 703 Agnes St., New Westminster. His nearest relative in Ireland is his father, James Gough, of 23 Richmond Ave., Fairview, Dublin. The record notes that he had no money in his possession when he arrived in Canada:

I then found another record for the person I believe to be your father at Ancestry.com’s “Canadian Passenger Lists, 1865-1935.” This record shows that John James Gough arrived at the Port of St. John, New Brunswick, on 10 March 1930, on board the ship Montcalm.. His port of departure was Belfast, Northern Ireland. His age upon arrival is listed as 31. His place of birth is the “Irish Free State,” but his nationality is Canadian. The record shows he had lived in Canada previous to this arrival in 1930. His dates of residence in Canada are 1925-1929. His address in Canada is New Westminster. His occupation is bookkeeper for a bank. His nearest relative in Canada is “Mrs Gough,” of 718 Royal Ave., New Westminster, NB. CONCLUSION
Barbara, I didn’t locate any records showing that your grandmother Theresa’s maiden name was McGrath. The closest connection I could find between the Gough and McGrath surnames was in the 1911 census. But even with that record, I don’t know if Minnie and Gertrude McGrath were related to James or Annie Gough by blood.
If you believe the information above pertains to your father’s family, I recommend accessing the same records and indexes that I did from the Irish Genealogy, LDS, IFHF, and National Archives of Ireland websites. The records and indexes from these sites are free to search, as are birth, marriage, and death indexes found at the FreeBMD website for English births, marriages, and deaths.
I also recommend that you access the same English census returns that I did, so that you can go over these enumerations for yourself, to see if I had made any errors in their transcriptions, and to see if you believe these census returns may pertain to your Gough and related ancestors. These census returns were found at the Ancestry.com subscription website. Ancestry.com offers several different subscription packages at various prices. If you don’t want to subscribe to Ancestry.com, check with your local library, as some libraries provide Ancestry.com for free to their patrons.
If all the records I uncovered do pertain to your Gough ancestors, the various places they had lived through the generations, include Wiltshire, London, Hampshire, Sussex, South America, Dublin, Cavan, and Canada.
Best Wishes,
Dave Boylan
